Protective Effects of Sesame Glycoproteins on Ultraviolet-Induced Skin Aging: In Vitro and In Vivo Studies.

Background/objectives: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a primary factor in skin photoaging, leading to wrinkles, reduced elasticity, and pigmentation changes due to damage to cellular DNA, proteins, and lipids. Glycoproteins from sesame cake (SPE) have potential protective effects against UV-induced skin aging. This study investigated the anti-photoaging effects of SPE on UV-induced damage in human keratinocyte HaCaT cells and SKH-1 hairless mice.

Action pattern of Sulfolobus O-α-glycoligase for synthesis of highly water soluble resveratrol 3,4'-α-diglucoside.

This study presents the enzymatic synthesis of resveratrol-3,4'-O-α-diglucoside (RDG) using a hyperactive O-α-glycoligase (MalA-D416R/Q450S) and α-glucopyranosyl fluoride as the donor substrate. The transglycosylation rate for resveratrol by MalA-D416R/Q450S was maximized in 100 mM Tris-HCl (pH 9.5) containing 20 % DMSO at 45°C.

Background: Obesity is a serious disease with an alarmingly high incidence that can lead to other complications in both humans and dogs. Similar to humans, obesity can cause metabolic diseases such as diabetes in dogs. Natural products may be the preferred intervention for metabolic diseases such as obesity.

Heterogeneous Popularity of Metabolic Reactions from Evolution.

The composition of cellular metabolism is different across species. Empirical data reveal that bacterial species contain similar numbers of metabolic reactions but that the cross-species popularity of reactions is so heterogenous that some reactions are found in all the species while others are in just few species, characterized by a power-law distribution with the exponent one. Introducing an evolutionary model concretizing the stochastic recruitment of chemical reactions into the metabolism of different species at different times and their inheritance to descendants, we demonstrate that the exponential growth of the number of species containing a reaction and the saturated recruitment rate of brand-new reactions lead to the empirically identified power-law popularity distribution.

Profiling of differentially expressed proteins between fresh and frozen-thawed Duroc boar semen using ProteinChip CM10.

Many studies have been conducted to improve technology for semen cryopreservation in pigs. However, computer-assisted analysis of sperm motility and morphology is insufficient to predict the molecular function of frozen-thawed semen. More accurate expression patterns of boar sperm proteins may be derived using the isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) technique.

Perturbations made to networked systems may result in partial structural loss, such as a blackout in a power-grid system. Investigating the resulting disturbance in network properties is quintessential to understand real networks in action. The removal of nodes is a representative disturbance, but previous studies are seemingly contrasting about its effect on arguably the most fundamental network statistic, the degree distribution.

Coagulation measures after cardiac arrest (CMACA).

Background: During cardiac arrest (CA) and after cardiopulmonary resuscitation, activation of blood coagulation and inadequate endogenous fibrinolysis occur. The aim of this study was to describe the time course of coagulation abnormalities after out-of-hospital CA (OHCA) and to examine the association with clinical outcomes in patients undergoing targeted temperature management (TTM) after OHCA.

Methods: This prospective, multicenter, observational cohort study was performed in eight emergency departments in Korea between September 2018 and September 2019.

Like humans, obesity is a growing problem in dogs, which may increase the risk of serious diseases such as diabetes and cancer. Mulberry leaf has shown potential anti-obesity and anti-diabetes effects in several studies.

A link between CD8+CD27-CD28- T cells expressing chemerin chemokine-like receptor 1 and rheumatoid arthritis.

Objectives: Transcription of the chemerin chemokine-like receptor 1 (CMKLR1) has been observed in T cell subsets, but its role in T cells has not been well studied. As previously reported, the levels of its ligand, chemerin, are increased in the plasma and synovial fluid of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA); hence, we aimed to explore the expression and role of CMKLR1 in the T cells of these patients.

Methods: Peripheral blood and synovial fluid from patients with RA or osteoarthritis and healthy individuals were collected to analyse the frequency of CD27-CD28- T cells and the expression of CMKLR1 and TNF-α by flow cytometry.

Psychological mistreatment by married children in Korea: using the contextual theory to explain mistreatment of aging parents and parents-in-law.

Guided by the contextual theory of elder mistreatment, this study examined the psychological mistreatment (PM) of aging parents and parents-in-law by their married children and compared the risk factors of PM. We used nationally representative data on the adverse experiences of Korean adults in 2017 (n=2,974). Results showed similarities and differences in the PM of aging parents and parents-in-law.

Healthy lifestyle factors, cardiovascular comorbidities, and the risk of sudden cardiac arrest: A case-control study in Korea.

Aims: We investigated the impact of healthy lifestyle factors and cardiovascular comorbidities for sudden cardiac arrest.

Methods: A case-control study, including patients with sudden cardiac arrest aged 20-79 years and community-based 1:2 matched controls, was conducted from September 2017 to December 2020. All participants completed a structured questionnaire.

Rufomycins or Ilamycins: Naming Clarifications and Definitive Structural Assignments.

Rufomycin and ilamycin are synonymous for the same class of cyclopeptides, currently encompassing 33 structurally characterized isolates and 9 semisynthetic derivatives. Elucidation of new structures prioritized the consolidation of the names and established the structures of four diastereoisomeric rufomycins with a 2-piperidinone, named rufomycins 4-7, including full H/C NMR assignments. The characteristic HSQC cross-peak for the CH-5, the hemiaminal carbon in amino acid #5, allows assignment of the stereocenters C-4 and C-5 within this ring.

Assessment of medical students' clinical performance using high-fidelity simulation: comparison of peer and instructor assessment.

Background: High-fidelity simulators are highly useful in assessing clinical competency; they enable reliable and valid evaluation. Recently, the importance of peer assessment has been highlighted in healthcare education, and studies using peer assessment in healthcare, such as medicine, nursing, dentistry, and pharmacy, have examined the value of peer assessment. This study aimed to analyze inter-rater reliability between peers and instructors and examine differences in scores between peers and instructors in the assessment of high-fidelity-simulation-based clinical performance by medical students.

Effect of black ginseng and silkworm supplementation on obesity, the transcriptome, and the gut microbiome of diet-induced overweight dogs.

Like humans, weight control in overweight dogs is associated with a longer life expectancy and a healthier life. Dietary supplements are one of the best strategies for controlling obesity and obesity-associated diseases. This study was conducted to assess the potential of black ginseng (BG) and silkworm (SW) as supplements for weight control in diet-induced overweight beagle dogs.

Development of a Gas Chromatography-Time-of-Flight Method for Detecting Glucosinolate Metabolites and Volatile Organic Compounds in Kimchi.

This study examined the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and metabolites of glucosinolate (GLS) contained in kimchi and analyzed GLS using myrosinase. The analysis was conducted using gas chromatography-time of flight (GC-TOF), and VOC and the metabolite quantities were detected and analyzed. Based on 22 samples, tests were conducted, and 12 metabolites and 52 VOCs were found.

e-Learning for enhancement of medical student performance at the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

This study aimed to investigate the impact of student e-learning on the development of clinical competencies. The study participants were 3rd year students (n = 43) at a private mid-sized medical school located in a South Korean suburb on a four-year medical program. Educational intervention was implemented to enhance student clinical performance.
