Obesity is a serious global health challenge, closely associated with numerous chronic conditions including type 2 diabetes. Bunge (AA) known as Jimo has been used to address conditions associated with pathogenic heat such as wasting-thirst in Korean Medicine. Timosaponin A3 (TA3), a natural compound extracted from AA, has demonstrated potential therapeutic effects in various disease models.

We propose a hybrid technique that employs artificial intelligence (AI)-based segmentation and machine learning classification using multiple features extracted from the foveal avascular zone (FAZ)-a retinal biomarker for Alzheimer's disease-to improve the disease diagnostic performance. Imaging data of optical coherence tomography angiography from 37 patients with Alzheimer's disease and 48 healthy controls were investigated. The presence or absence of brain amyloids was confirmed using amyloid positron emission tomography.

Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of electroacupuncture for the treatment of obesity.

Methods: We searched 8 electronic databases for articles published between 2005 and 2021, including only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in the review. The intervention groups received either electroacupuncture alone or electroacupuncture with standard care, whereas the control groups received sham electroacupuncture, standard care, or no treatment.

Background: Electroacupuncture has been used as a treatment; however, a visual bibliometric analysis has not yet been performed in this field. In this study, we aimed to suggest future research topics and directions related to the field by examining the last 20 years of research trends and hotspots of electroacupuncture in stroke.

Methods: We searched the Web of Science database on electroacupuncture as a treatment for stroke published from 2003 to 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of 21 randomized controlled trials demonstrated significant improvements in body weight, body mass index, hip circumference, and waist circumference for those receiving cupping therapy combined with other treatments.
  • However, no significant changes were noted in waist-hip ratio or body fat percentage, and no adverse events were reported, indicating that cupping therapy may be a safe treatment option.

This study compared the characteristics of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD)-related and glaucomatous optic disc hemorrhage (DH). Fundus photographs of eyes with PVD-related DH (PVD group) and glaucomatous DH (glaucoma group) were reviewed. The shape, type, layer, location (clock-hour sector), and DH/disc area (DH/DA) ratio of DH were investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • - The review investigated the effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine combined with standard medical treatments for lumbar herniated intervertebral discs, revealing potential benefits in pain relief and improved physical function.
  • - A systematic search of several medical databases led to the inclusion of 28 randomized controlled trials with a total of 2,746 participants, showcasing substantial improvements in pain and disability scores for the experimental group.
  • - Despite promising results, the conclusion emphasizes caution due to the low quality of the studies reviewed, suggesting that further research is needed before widespread clinical application.

Objective: To assess and compare the visual performance of two extended depth-of-focus intraocular lenses (IOLs), Tecnis Symfony (Symfony; Johnson & Johnson Vision, Santa Ana, CA) and Acrysof IQ Vivity (Vivity; Alcon Inc, Fort Worth, TX).

Methods: The medical records of patients undergoing cataract surgery with Symfony or Vivity implantation from May 2021 to September 2021 and the data available for the 3-month follow-up were reviewed. The main measures of the findings were uncorrected and corrected distance (4 m) visual acuity (VA), uncorrected intermediate (66 cm) VA (UIVA) and uncorrected near (40 and 33 cm) VA (UNVA), refractive error (RE), defocus profiles analysis, optical quality parameters, and patient-reported quality of vision questionnaire results.

We investigated the characteristics of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in which exudation predominantly occurs as a subretinal fluid (SRF) during anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment. A total of 509 treatment-naïve neovascular AMD patients treated with anti-VEGF for 24 months were retrospectively analyzed. The baseline characteristics to determine the odds of occurrence of SRF alone were evaluated using multivariate modeling.

Prcis: Circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness change induced by optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan circle location displacement was not completely compensated despite the use of Guided Progression Analysis (GPA), especially when the "R1" registration method was applied.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of inconsistent OCT scan location on glaucoma progression detection using GPA.

Methods: Eighty-four glaucomatous eyes with at least 4 serial OCT tests were included.

Evaluation of interocular asymmetry of optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters is important for the glaucoma and optic neuropathies. This study was performed to evaluate the interocular asymmetry of OCT parameters in healthy children and adolescents. The circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, optic nerve head (ONH) parameters, and macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness were measured in 620 eyes of 310 healthy children and adolescents using Cirrus HD-OCT.
