Early mycosis fungoides (MF) and inflammatory dermatoses including psoriasis and chronic spongiotic dermatitis are often difficult to differentiate. We explored diagnostic markers differentiating MF from psoriasis and chronic spongiotic dermatitis via spatially resolved single-cell transcriptome analysis. Single-cell transcriptomics of intraepidermal T cells of MF patches, psoriasis and chronic spongiotic dermatitis were analyzed using CosMx spatial molecular imager utilizing surface markers, including CD3 and CD4.

Prognostic markers are needed for tumor-stage mycosis fungoides (MF) because of their variable prognosis. The objectives of this study were to explore prognostic markers for tumor-stage MF and assess the prognostic significance of clinically assessed MF tumor burden index (MTBI). MTBI was devised to consider the tumor size ≥ 2 cm, number ≥ 5, ulcers, and body surface area ≥ 50%.

Article Synopsis
  • The study was about using skin-directed radiation therapy (RT) to treat a type of skin cancer called cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL).
  • Researchers looked at 57 cases treated from 2000 to 2022 and compared three groups: early-stage disease, advanced-stage with local treatment, and advanced-stage with total body treatment.
  • The results showed that the treatments were mostly successful and caused few side effects, making them a good option for controlling this skin cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined 627 cases of primary cutaneous lymphoma (PCL) in Korea from 1994 to 2022, revealing significant variation in PCL subtypes across time and geography.
  • The majority (87.2%) of cases were T-/NK-cell lymphomas (CTCL), with notable increases in the prevalence of mycosis fungoides (MF) and CD4-positive small/medium T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder over the years.
  • Survival analysis indicated that CTCL generally had better 5-year overall survival rates compared to B-cell lymphomas (CBCL), with certain CTCL subtypes showing improved survival outcomes over time.

  • Amelanotic acral melanoma (AAM) is a rare and aggressive form of melanoma with a poor prognosis, prompting an investigation of its differences from pigmented acral melanoma (PAM).
  • The study analyzed transcriptomic profiles of AAM and PAM from multiple patients, focusing on gene expression and immune cell composition using specific markers.
  • Results showed significant differences, including certain genes being upregulated or downregulated in AAM, and variations in immune cell types, indicating that AAM has unique biological characteristics that could affect its clinical outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the effects of wearing masks during the COVID-19 pandemic on facial skin issues, known as facial dermatoses, through a nationwide survey in Korea.
  • Results showed that 75.9% of patients experienced worsening or new facial skin conditions linked to prolonged mask-wearing, with specific trends noted among different skin issues.
  • Factors such as gender, age, and duration of mask use influenced the severity and type of facial dermatoses, highlighting the varied clinical features based on the specific condition.

Purpose: Few studies have investigated the impact of biologics on the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) among Korean patients with psoriatic diseases. We compared the risk of MACEs and all-cause mortality among patients with psoriatic disease treated with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-12/23 inhibitors in Korea.

Methods: Patients with psoriatic disease prescribed with TNF-α and IL-12/23 inhibitors since 2016 were selected from the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) Database.

Article Synopsis
  • A study comparing comorbidities in patients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (AD) found that psoriasis patients had significantly higher odds of conditions like obesity, hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and Parkinson's disease.
  • The analysis included 14,128 patients and utilized data from Asan Medical Center to assess how these comorbidities are associated with different psoriasis subtypes.
  • Specifically, plaque psoriasis was linked to multiple conditions, while guttate psoriasis had higher odds of dementia, and generalized pustular psoriasis was associated with a significantly higher risk of diabetes.

Background: More than half of acne patients have truncal acne on their chest, back, and shoulders. However, since most studies on acne have focused on the face, data on clinical characteristics and proper management for truncal acne are insufficient.

Objective: To establish a Korean Acne Rosacea Society (KARS) consensus for experts' perception and treatment patterns of truncal acne.

  • Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) has a worse prognosis than nonacral cutaneous melanoma (NACM), and the study investigates the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a potential prognostic marker for ALM.
  • Analysis of patient records from 1997 to 2022 revealed that advanced-stage ALM had a higher median NLR compared to NACM, indicating notable differences in baseline NLR.
  • The study found that a high NLR in ALM patients was linked to poorer progression-free survival, suggesting that NLR could be an important prognostic tool for assessing ALM outcomes.

Background: Prurigo nodularis (PN) is an intensively pruritic skin disease that negatively influences quality of life. Cryosim-1 (Intrinsic IB Spot) is a synthetic, selective transient receptor potential melastatin 8 agonist.

Aims: To investigate the efficacy and safety of cryosim-1 in PN patients.

There are limited large population-based cohort studies on the risk of incident autoimmune diseases among patients with newly diagnosed psoriatic disease. The objective of this study was to assess the risk of autoimmune diseases in patients with newly diagnosed psoriatic disease. Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, patients with newly diagnosed psoriatic disease between 2007 and 2019 were included.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on the cancer risks in psoriasis patients and how different treatments, specifically TNF-α inhibitors and IL-12/23 inhibitors, impact those risks.
  • - Analysis of data from 191,678 psoriasis patients revealed a higher overall cancer risk compared to the general population, with TNF-α inhibitors linked to a significant increase in overall cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk.
  • - In contrast, IL-12/23 inhibitors did not show an increased cancer risk, suggesting they may be a safer treatment option in terms of cancer risk for psoriasis patients.

Mycosis fungoides with large-cell transformation (MF-LCT) occurs in a minor proportion of aggressive lesions, which express CD30 similar to primary cutaneous anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (pcALCL). We investigated the differences in spatially resolved transcriptome profiles of MF-LCT and pcALCL using CD30 morphology markers and 28 and 24 regions of interest (ROIs) in MF-LCT and pcALCL, respectively. Differentially expressed genes, pathway analysis, and immune-cell deconvolution by selective analysis of CD30-positive tumor cells and CD30-negative extratumoral areas were undertaken.

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) may have applications in treating various types of malignant tumors. This study assessed the anticancer effects of CAP using melanoma and colon cancer cell lines. CAP treatment significantly reduced the in vitro viability of melanoma and colon cancer cell lines and had a negligible effect on the viability of normal human melanocytes.
