Death as a Complication of Urologic Surgery-2 Cases Identified at Autopsy.

While routine medical procedures often impose some level of risk for the patient, death after routine urologic care is rare. In this series, we present 2 cases in which a relatively healthy patient ultimately died after complications, one from a prostate biopsy and one from a total nephrectomy. In case 1, a 58-year-old male died due to a 1500-mL to 2000-mL left retroperitoneal hemorrhage that occurred during insertion of a central line for sepsis treatment that resulted from an infection after a transrectal prostate biopsy.

Ovarian Neoplasm: Delivering Suspicion of Cancer in the Emergency Department.

Cancer is not infrequently detected in the Emergency Department (ED) and is sometimes even an incidental finding on imaging. Since the ED is designed to identify and treat acutely ill patients, the time providers can spend with patients and the depth of investigation into patient conditions is limited. However, Emergency Medicine physicians must ensure the appropriate follow-up for patients with presumptive diagnosis of cancer to ensure timely confirmatory testing, prompt treatment, and accurate prognosis.

Association of alpha-thalassemia and Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase deficiency with transcranial Doppler ultrasonography in Nigerian children with sickle cell anemia.

Background: Stroke is a devastating complication of sickle cell anemia (SCA) and can be predicted through abnormally high cerebral blood flow velocity using transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography (TCD). The evidence on the role of alpha-thalassemia and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in the development of stroke in children with SCA is conflicting. Thus, this study investigated the association of alpha-thalassemia and G6PD(A ) variant with abnormal TCD velocities among Nigerian children with SCA.
