Two different hard-radiation phenomena are known to originate from thunderclouds: terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) and gamma-ray glows. Both involve an avalanche of electrons accelerated to relativistic energies but are otherwise different. Glows are known to last for one to hundreds of seconds, have moderate intensities and originate from quasi-stationary thundercloud fields.

Observations report increased gamma-ray emissions by tens of percent up to two orders of magnitude above the background, sometimes abruptly terminated by lightning discharges. Glows are produced by the acceleration of energetic electrons in high-electric-field regions within thunderclouds and contribute to charge dissipation.

To control the proliferation of vascular endothelial cells, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) promotes the remodeling of the existing blood vessels and angiogenesis.
Objective: This study aimed to explain the lowering protein and mRNA levels of VEGF in lesional skin of patients with severe psoriasis (the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index, PASI > 25).
The use of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) for treating chronic inflammatory disorders, wounds, and ischemia-reperfusion injuries has shown improved healing efficacy. However, the poor survival rate of transplanted cells due to oxidative stress in injured or inflamed tissue remains a significant concern for MSC-based therapies. In this study, we developed a new approach to protect MSCs from oxidative stress, thereby improving their survival in a wound microenvironment and enhancing their therapeutic effect.

The developed algorithms capture phenotypic changes in the tumor and predict changes in tumor behavior, drug resistance, and clinical outcomes of anti-cancer therapy. The aim of this study was to propose a mathematical model that predicts the changes in the cellular composition of patient-derived tumor organoids over time with a perspective of translation of these results to the parental tumor, and therefore to possible clinical course and outcomes for the patient.

Arc protein forms capsid-like particles, which can encapsulate and transfer mRNA in extracellular vesicles (EVs) between hippocampal neurons. Once glioma cell networks actively interact with neurons via paracrine signaling and formation of neurogliomal glutamatergic synapses, we predicted the involvement of Arc in a process of EV-mediated mRNA transfer between glioma cells.

At the early stages of the pathological process, an elevation of their enzymatic activity causes significant changes in the composition of the extracellular matrix. MMPs secreted by immune cells facilitate their migration to the site of damage.

However, poor survival of exogenous cells at the site of injury is a major complication that impairs MSC therapeutic efficacy. It has been found that tissue-oxygen adaptation or hypoxic pre-conditioning of MSCs could improve the healing process.

Tumor spheroids, a commonly used 3D multicellular tumor model, more closely reproduce the tumor microenvironment than conventional 2D cell cultures. It should be noted that spheroids can be produced using different techniques, which can be subdivided into scaffold-free (SF) and scaffold-based (SB) methods.

The events were detected between the end of March 2019 and November 2020 and consist of X- and gamma-ray energy detections, as well as photometer data (180-230, 337, and 777 nm) and optical camera data (337 and 777 nm). Using the available ASIM data and applying a consistency check based on TGF characteristics and lightning detections from lightning radio atmospherics close in time, we determine the most likely position of the TGFs in relation to the photometer field of view (FoV), and the association to the observed optical pulses.

In immune cells, the skin, and other organs, PPAR-γ regulates lipid, glucose, and amino acid metabolism. The receptor translates nutritional, pharmacological, and metabolic stimuli into the changes in gene expression.

Psoriasis is one of the most prevalent skin disorders driven by a Th17-specific immune response. Although potential patients have a genetic predisposition to psoriasis, the etiology of the disease remains unknown.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma () is a nuclear receptor and transcription factor which regulates the expression of many proinflammatory genes. We tested the hypothesis that low levels of expression promote the development of psoriatic lesions triggering the -related signaling cascade.

Focusing on desialylation as the first and the most important reaction of proatherogenic pathological cascade, we speak of how desialylation increases the atherogenic properties of low density lipoproteins and decreases the anti-atherogenic properties of high density lipoproteins. The separate sections of this paper are devoted to immunogenicity of lipoproteins, the enzymes contributing to their desialylation and animal models of atherosclerosis.

Terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) are transient gamma-ray emissions from thunderstorms, generated by electrons accelerated to relativistic energies in electric fields. Elves are ultraviolet and optical emissions excited in the lower ionosphere by electromagnetic waves radiated from lightning current pulses. We observed a TGF and an associated elve using the Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor on the International Space Station.

In total, six events with world wide lightning location network (WWLLN) defined locations were analyzed to exhibit a good fit between the modeled and observed energy spectral densities. In VLF range the energy spectral density of the TGF source current moment is found to be dominated by the contribution of secondary low-energy electrons and independent of the relativistic electrons which play their role in low-frequency (LF) range.
