Background: This study sought to determine the safety of primary and staged biventricular repair in neonates with interrupted aortic arch (IAA), ventricular septal defect (VSD), and severe left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO).

Methods: Patients with a fundamental diagnosis of IAA and VSD between 2015 and 2020 were extracted from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Database by using a Participant User File. The objective was to compare outcomes for neonates undergoing primary and staged Yasui and Ross operations.

Mammalian genomes contain millions of regulatory elements that control the complex patterns of gene expression. Previously, The ENCODE consortium mapped biochemical signals across many cell types and tissues and integrated these data to develop a Registry of 0.9 million human and 300 thousand mouse candidate cis-Regulatory Elements (cCREs) annotated with potential functions.

Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) testing is becoming increasingly common as a tool to assess for alcohol consumption in the practice of addiction medicine. Its potential to be an objective measure of ethanol exposure is appealing; however, the field has yet to develop a complete understanding of the factors that can influence a PEth level. Here we describe 3 patient cases in which blood transfusion within the preceding 28 days was the reason that PEth studies were positive in patients undergoing liver transplant evaluation.

Unlabelled: Mtb) is one of the leading infectious causes of death worldwide. There is no available licensed therapeutic vaccine that shortens active tuberculosis (TB) disease drug treatment and prevents relapse, despite the World Health Organization's calls. Here, we show that an intranasal DNA vaccine containing a fusion of the stringent response gene with the gene encoding the immature dendritic cell-targeting chemokine, MIP-3α/CCL20, shortens the duration of curative TB treatment in immunocompetent mice.

(Mtb), the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB), is the leading cause of mortality due to a single infectious organism. While generally curable, TB requires a lengthy and complex antibiotic regimen, due in large part to bacteria that can shift to a persistent state in the presence of antibiotic pressure. Rel is the primary enzyme regulating the stringent response, which contributes to the metabolic shift of Mtb to a persistent state.

Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic made existing health problems worse for many young Latine/x people in the U.S., leading to more anxiety, depression, and thoughts of self-harm.
  • A study looked at how things like racial bias and stress from the pandemic affected Mexican-descent college students' mental health.
  • The results showed that experiences of racial bias during COVID-19 increased feelings of stress and depression, which could lead to thoughts of suicide or self-harm, highlighting the need for better support.

The density functional theory study of the thermal C-C reductive coupling from terminal cyanido and hypothetical cyaphido complexes of [Ni(dmpe)] (dmpe = 1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane) revealed the key reaction intermediate in the reductive C-CP coupling being a σ-CC complex unlike an η-aryl complex in the Ni C-CN system, as already observed in our previous studies. The reaction in THF is endothermic by 4.9 kcal/mol for cyanido with a 32.

Unlabelled: The acute respiratory illness caused by coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) has spread throughout the world, causing significant morbidity and mortality.

Objectives: To assess clinical and laboratory variables measured at hospital admission associated with clinically relevant adverse outcomes in patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia caused by coronavirus SARSCoV-2.

Methods: We conducted a descriptive prospective study in adult patients hospitalized due to COVID-19-associated pneumonia at the UC Christus Health Network.

Resurgence in malaria has been noted in 2022 with 249 million clinical cases resulting in 608,000 deaths, mostly in children under five. Two vaccines, RTS, S, and more recently R21, targeting the circumsporozoite protein (CSP) are recommended by the WHO but are not yet widely available. Strong humoral responses to neutralize sporozoites before they can infect the hepatocytes are important for vaccine-mediated protection.

Immigrant students and families experience disproportionate exposure to trauma, immigration-related stress, structural inequities, and poor access to mental health and social services which can lead to mental health inequities. Immigrant students and their families also have many strengths that can buffer potential negative mental health outcomes. Schools, which address social and emotional development in addition to academic achievement, are critical institutions that can play a unique role in enhancing the strengths and responding to the needs of immigrant students and families.

Esophageal self-expandable metal stents (SEMS) are an important endoscopic tool. These stents have now been adapted successfully to manage post-bariatric surgery complications such as anastomotic leaks and strictures. In centers of expertise, this has become the primary standard-of-care treatment given its minimally invasive nature, and that it results in early oral feeding, decreased hospitalization, and overall favorable outcomes.

While better management of loco-regional prostate cancer (PC) has greatly improved survival, advanced PC remains a major cause of cancer deaths. Identification of novel targetable pathways that contribute to tumor progression in PC could open new therapeutic options. The di-ganglioside GD2 is a target of FDA-approved antibody therapies in neuroblastoma, but the role of GD2 in PC is unexplored.

The neurohormone oxytocin (OT) has become a major target for the development of novel therapeutic strategies to treat psychiatric disorders such as autism spectrum disorder because of its integral role in governing many facets of mammalian social behavior. Whereas extensive work in rodents has produced much of our knowledge of OT, we lack basic information about its neurobiology in primates making it difficult to interpret the limited effects that OT manipulations have had in human patients. In fact, previous studies have revealed only limited OT fibers in primate brains.

Aims: Quantile regression is an alternate type of regression analysis that has been shown to have numerous advantages over standard linear regression. Unlike linear regression, which uses the mean to fit a linear model, quantile regression uses a data set's quantiles (or percentiles), which leads to a more comprehensive analysis of the data. However, while relatively common in other scientific fields such as economic and environmental modeling, it is infrequently used to understand biological and microbiological systems.

Background: To address needs for emotional well-being resources for Californians during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Together for Wellness/Juntos por Nuestro Bienestar (T4W/Juntos) website was developed in collaboration with multiple community partners across California, funded by the California Department of Health Care Services Behavioral Health Division federal emergency response.

Objective: This qualitative study was designed to explore and describe the perspectives of participants affiliated with California organizations on the T4W/Juntos website, understand their needs for web-based emotional health resources, and inform iterative website development.

Methods: After providing informed consent and reviewing the website, telephone interviews were conducted with 29 participants (n=21, 72% in English and n=8, 28% in Spanish) recruited by partnering community agencies (October 2021-February 2022).

In recent years, significant attention has been paid to fuzzy recommender systems for housing, highlighting their ability to effectively handle the imprecision and uncertainty inherent in the real estate market. With the objective of improving the filtering of recommendations in the real estate sector, the PRISMA 2020 methodology was applied to perform new systematic reviews using its checklist on six academic databases from 1985 to 2024. RawGraph, Orange Data Minig, Jamovi and R software were used for document classification and data visualization.
