Background: We developed a blended training program at a tertiary pediatric center based on hospital-specific emergency guidelines, profession-specific Virtual Patients (VPs), and interprofessional team training. Using this novel approach, we addressed differing educational needs of medical and nursing staff and intrinsic cognitive overload among participants, aiming for harmonization of in-house emergency proceedings.

Methods: Self-assessments of pediatric emergency knowledge and skills were conducted before (T1) and after (T2) preparation using VPs, as well as after the team training day (T3).

We report a case of lower respiratory tract infection with human bocavirus 1 (HboV1) in an immunodeficient 6-month-old boy leading to respiratory failure with fatal outcome. Polymerase chain reaction of serum/tracheal secretions revealed exceptionally high HboV1-DNA levels and immunoassays showed seroconversion indicating an acute primary HboV1 infection. All assays for other pathogens were negative, strongly suggesting that HboV1 was the causative agent in this case.

Background: Neonatal manifestation of life-threatening hyperammonemic encephalopathy in urea cycle disorders (UCD) is often misdiagnosed as neonatal sepsis, resulting in significantly delayed start of specific treatment and poor outcome. The major aim of this study was to identify specific initial symptoms or signs to clinically distinguish hyperammonemic encephalopathy in neonates from neonatal sepsis in order to identify affected individuals with UCD and to start metabolic therapy without delay. Methods: A total of 20 heparinized pig kidneys were investigated at 10 intrapelvic hydrostatic pressure steps (0-90 mmHg). SWE (ARFI; Virtual TouchTM IQ, Siemens) measurements were taken at three different measuring regions and in two measuring sequences using a linear ultrasonography probe (9L4, Siemens). Using the sensitivity of optical second harmonic generation to currents, we demonstrate the generation of 250-fs long spin current pulses in Fe/Au/Fe/MgO(001) spin valves. The temporal profile of these pulses indicates ballistic transport of hot electrons across a sub-100 nm Au layer. The pulse duration is primarily determined by the thermalization time of laser-excited hot carriers in Fe.

An experimental setup, which combines direct heating and temperature measurement of metal nanofilms allowing temperature programmed desorption experiments is described. This setup enables the simultaneous monitoring of the thermal desorption flux from the surface of chemi-electric devices and detection of chemically induced hot charge carriers under UHV conditions.
