Synthesis, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial studies of 2,4,5,6-substituted hexahydro-1H-isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione.

In this study, synthesis of novel isoindole-1,3-dione analogues bearig halo, hydroxy, and acetoxy groups at the position 4,5,6 of the bicyclic imide ring was performed to examine their potential anticancer effects against some cell lines. A multistep chemical pathway was used to synthesize the derivatives. The cytotoxic effect of trisubstituted isoindole derivatives were evaluated by determining cellular viability using the MTT assay against A549, PC-3, HeLa, Caco-2, and MCF-7 cell lines.

Fabrication and evaluation of thermally cross-linked gelatin nanofibers for drug delivery applications.

In this study, four different nanofibers consisting of gelatin (Gel), doxorubicin (DOX) with gel (DOX@Gel), a composite of gel with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEGylated-gel), and DOX@PEGylated-gel were fabricated. Subsequently, the nanofibers were thermally cross-linked in order to offer a stable and biocompatible alternative for the biological applications of nanofibers such as drug delivery and tissue engineering. Nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), and confocal microscopy.

[Which indications for inpatient admission of a patient with an addiction? Application of the chronic disorders model. A face validity study].

Introduction: The medical identification of an addiction (use disorder) often results in inpatient admission with a view to its definitive suspension. However, for other chronic diseases, inpatient admission is indicated for specific situations and the objective is not the definitive suspension of the chronic disease. Our goal was to clarify addiction as a chronic disease and to determine explicit indications for inpatient admission.

[Evaluation of the smoking cessation at the patients of Saint-Denis (Reunion island), over the year 2014].

Introduction: The fight against smoking is a major challenge for public health in Reunion Island. This French overseas department knows considerable social inequalities and so there is a possibility of free access to nicotine substitution among disadvantaged patients. The objective was to describe the social characteristics, the level of addiction to smoking and the actual level of smoking cessation at 18 months of tobacco-smoking patients from Reunion who consulted in 2014.

[Taxation of traditional rums in French overseas territories and public health: The example of Reunion Island].

Background: France has a complex system for the taxation of alcoholic beverages. In the French overseas territories (FOT), the system includes little-known specificities whose purpose is to preserve the sugar-cane-rum sector, a pillar for the weak economies in these territories. Taxes are reduced for traditional rums produced and sold locally.

Doppler ultrasonographic measurement of short-term effects of valsalva maneuver on retrobulbar blood flow.

Background: To investigate the effects of Valsalva maneuver (VM) on retrobulbar blood flow parameters in healthy subjects.

Methods: Participants without any ophthalmologic or systemic pathology were examined in supine position with color and pulsed Doppler imaging for blood flow measurement, via a paraocular approach, in the ophthalmic artery (OA), central retinal artery (CRA), central retinal vein (CRV), nasal posterior ciliary artery (NPCA), and temporal posterior ciliary artery (TPCA), 10 seconds after a 35- to 40-mm Hg expiratory pressure was reached. Peak systolic velocity (PSV), end-diastolic velocity (EDV), pulsatility index (PI), and resistivity index (RI) values were recorded for each artery.

Synthesis and Topoisomerase I inhibitory properties of klavuzon derivatives.

Klavuzon is a naphthalen-1-yl substituted α,β-unsaturated δ-lactone derivative, and is one of the anti-proliferative members of this class of compounds. Asymmetric and racemic syntheses of novel α,β-unsaturated δ-lactone derivatives are important to investigate their potential for the treatment of cancer. In this study, asymmetric and racemic syntheses of heteroatom-substituted klavuzon derivatives are reported.

[Aripiprazole, gambling disorder and compulsive sexuality].

Introduction: Aripiprazole, an atypical or second-generation antipsychotic, is usually well tolerated. It is an approved treatment for schizophrenia and mania in bipolar disorder type 1. Unlike the other antipsychotics, it has high affinity agonist properties for dopamine D2 and D3 receptors.

Intraorbital haematoma during a commercial flight: a case report.

Background: Intraorbital haematoma is a rare clinical entity which can be caused by orbital traumas, neoplasms, surgeries nearby sinuses and orbit, vascular malformations, acute sinusitis, systemic abnormalities, barotrauma and valsalva maneuver.

Case Presentation: A 74-year-old male presented with sudden onset of ocular pain, upper eye lid swelling, proptosis and diplopia after a commercial flight. After complete ophthalmic ocular examination including pupillary light reflexes and laboratory examinations; computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of orbit revealed a subperiostal mass-like lesion in the right retrobulbar-extraconal region which was compatible with intraorbital haematoma.

[Internet and video games among students of Reunion Island in 2010: uses, misuses, perceptions and associated factors].

Background: Describe the uses of Internet and video games and quantify associated problematic uses.

Methods: Information on student practices concerning the use of the Internet and video games was collected with a self-administered questionnaire. Problematic uses were identified with specific tools (Young criteria and Tejeiro criteria) and with self-evaluative questions.

Evaluation of central, steady, maintained fixation grading for predicting inter-eye visual acuity difference to diagnose and treat amblyopia in strabismic patients.

Background: Diagnosis of amblyopia in preverbal strabismic patients is frequently made by binocular fixation preference (BFP) testing. The reports on reliability of BFP are equivocal. This study evaluated the reliability of BFP testing in patients with horizontal strabismus.

The comparison of pulmonary functions in open versus laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Objective: To examine respiratory functions of patients after open and laparoscopic cholecystectomy and to compare the advantages.

Methods: Fifty five cases with cholelithiasis subjected to elective cholescystectomy were studied. The patients were divided into two groups.

Ultrasonic harmonic scalpel in total thyroidectomies.

Introduction: Haemostasis is very important in thyroid surgery. In conventional surgery, electrocoagulation and suture ligation are used for haemostasis; newer techniques include vessel clips, ultrasonic instruments and lasers. The aim of this prospective study was to compare the usage of the ultrasonic harmonic scalpel (UHS) with conventional procedures, in total thyroidectomies, for operation time, blood loss, usage of drain, cost, length of hospitalisation and complications.

Sensory nerve repair in perforator flaps for autologous breast reconstruction: sensational or senseless?

The spontaneous return of sensation in autologously reconstructed breasts, especially in the Transverse Rectus Abdominis Myocutaneous (TRAM) flap, generated the belief that sensory reinnervation by nerve repair of the flap would be superfluous. This study compares the sensation of the following non-reconstructed and reconstructed breasts: (1) non-operated breasts; (2) flaps of patients reconstructed with the Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) flap with sensory nerve repair; (3) flaps of patients reconstructed with the Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) flap without nerve repair; and (4) flaps of patients reconstructed with the free TRAM flap without nerve repair. Statistically significant lower pressure thresholds were found for DIEP flaps with nerve repair through Semmes-Weinstein testing.
