Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to enhance early diagnosis of candidemia in ICU patients by identifying risk factors and developing a new scoring system, known as the Cerrahpaşa score.
  • A retrospective analysis of 100 ICU patients revealed key risk factors such as sepsis and prolonged antibiotic use, while a prospective evaluation of 75 patients established a cutoff score of ≥4 points as indicative of increased candidemia risk.
  • The research concluded that the Cerrahpaşa score, combined with a real-time PCR assay, could improve the early detection and management of candidemia in critically ill patients.

This study primarily aimed to examine the significance of the C-reactive protein to lymphocyte ratio (CLR), a key marker of inflammation, in relation to the disease progression and management of COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). A total of 464 patients aged 18 years or older, diagnosed with COVID-19 and admitted to the ICU between April 1, 2021, and February 1, 2022, were included in the study. Sociodemographic, laboratory, radiological, and clinical data were collected for each patient.

Objectives: An update of the first European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESSR) consensus on soft tissue tumor imaging in 2015 became necessary due to technical advancements, further insights into specific entities, and the revised WHO classification (2020) and AJCC staging system (2017). The third part of the revised guidelines covers algorithms and techniques beyond initial imaging: (1) Imaging after neoadjuvant therapy in soft tissue sarcoma, (2) sarcoma surveillance, and (3) special aspects, including surveillance of non-malignant entities and the role of interventional radiology.

Materials And Methods: A validated Delphi method based on peer-reviewed literature was used to derive consensus among a panel of 46 specialized musculoskeletal radiologists from 12 European countries.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often leads to hospital readmissions, with a study involving 415 patients in Turkey revealing significant readmission rates of 42.4% within 30 days and 46% within 90 days after severe exacerbations.
  • Key risk factors for 30-day readmissions include high anxiety and depression scores, a history of severe exacerbations, hospital-acquired pneumonia, and frequent antibiotic use.
  • For 90-day readmissions, factors such as severe heart regurgitation, multiple moderate exacerbations, immunosuppression, and being hospitalized via the emergency department were significant contributors.

Objectives: Mental health (MH) care for people living with HIV (PLWH) emerges as an important unmet need, yet there are no integrated HIV-MH clinics in Turkey. Our aim is to determine MH service use and its associated factors in PLWH followed up in the HIV/AIDS outpatient clinics in Istanbul/Turkey.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the HIV/AIDS outpatient clinics of the Infectious Diseases (ID) departments in hospitals affiliated with the ACTHIV-IST Study Group.

  • The study investigates the reliability of three different methods for measuring carpal height in wrist radiographs, focusing on inter and intraobserver consistency.
  • 179 wrist radiographs were evaluated independently by two observers, with measurements taken one month apart to ensure reliability.
  • Results showed that all methods were highly reproducible, with the carpal height (CH) and revised carpal height (RCH) ratios demonstrating similar and better interobserver reliability compared to the capitate-radius (CR) index, although no statistical differences were found overall.

  • This study explored how ultra-processed food (UPF) intake is linked to low-grade inflammation in children by analyzing 50 healthy participants ages 5-17.
  • Results showed that children with higher inflammation scores consumed more UPF, with a significant correlation between energy intake from UPF and inflammation levels.
  • The findings suggest that increased UPF consumption is associated with higher inflammation scores in children, regardless of obesity factors.

Background: Emerging carbapenem-resistant () (CRKP) bacteremias are presenting significant public health risks due to limited treatment options and increased mortality. isolates exhibit carbapenem resistance rates that vary from 25% to 50% throughout the European continent, including our country.

Aims: To assess the characteristics of CRKP bacteremia, a condition that has recently demonstrated an increasing prevalence in our center.

Article Synopsis
  • Abacavir is a commonly used initial HIV treatment that can cause hypersensitivity reactions (HSR) linked to the HLA-B*57:01 allele, which can be serious and limit treatment options.
  • A study in Istanbul involved 867 treatment-naïve HIV patients to assess the prevalence of HLA-B*57:01 and found that 1.6% were positive, with four of those patients switched from abacavir-based therapy.
  • This prevalence data is lower than previous reports (3-3.6%) and suggests that HLA-B*57:01 screening is important for effective and safe HIV treatment planning in Turkey.

Introduction: Endoscopic approaches for skull base pathologies are increasingly being performed, and the subsequent complications, especially in the long term, have also been partially clarified. However, there is no information on the effects of endoscopic endonasal skull base surgeries (EESBS) in children on odor and facial development in parallel with long-term development. We conducted this study to investigate postoperative olfactory function and facial development in pediatric patients who underwent skull base surgery using the endoscopic endonasal method.
