Aim: To investigate ophthalmologic findings in children with thalassemia major (TM) and compare the findings with healthy controls.

Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 43 children with thalassemia major from pediatric hematology outpatient clinics from two university hospitals and age/sex matched 47 healthy children were included in the study. After a complete ophthalmic examination, tear function tests including the Schirmer test, fluorescein tear break-up time (BUT), ultrasound pachymetry, and axial length measurement were performed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study measured the thickness of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in children with thalassemia major (tha-major), iron deficiency anemia (IDA), and a healthy control group to assess ocular health.
  • A total of 104 children were included: 47 with tha-major, 22 with IDA, and 35 healthy controls, with RNFL thickness measured using optical coherence tomography.
  • Results showed that RNFL thickness was significantly thinner in children with tha-major compared to the other groups and also thinner in the inferior quadrant of the IDA group, with thickness correlating to hemoglobin and ferritin levels, but not to transfusions or visual acuity.

Introduction: An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of erythropoietin on the acute phase of esophageal burn damage induced by sodium hydroxide.

Materials And Methods: A standard esophageal alkaline burn was produced by the application of 10% sodium hydroxide to the distal esophagus in an in vivo rat model. Fifty-six female rats were allocated into three groups: Group BC (baseline control, n = 8) rats were uninjured and untreated, Group PC (positive control, n = 24) rats were injured but untreated and Group EPO (erythropoietin-treated, n = 24) rats were injured and given subcutaneous erythropoietin (1,000 IU/kg per day), 15 min, 24, and 48 h after administration of the NaOH solution.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between plasma visfatin, insulin resistance, lipid profile and anthropometric measurements in obese children.

Subjects And Methods: Plasma levels of visfatin, insulin, glucose, lipid profile and anthropometric indices were determined in 30 obese children and compared with those in 30 age- and gender-matched non-obese children. Visfatin was measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and logarithmically transformed to log visfatin for parametric comparisons.
