Design considerations for digital light processing bioprinters.

With the rapid development and popularization of additive manufacturing, different technologies, including, but not limited to, extrusion-, droplet-, and vat-photopolymerization-based fabrication techniques, have emerged that have allowed tremendous progress in three-dimensional (3D) printing in the past decades. Bioprinting, typically using living cells and/or biomaterials conformed by different printing modalities, has produced functional tissues. As a subclass of vat-photopolymerization bioprinting, digital light processing (DLP) uses digitally controlled photomasks to selectively solidify liquid photocurable bioinks to construct complex physical objects in a layer-by-layer manner.

Climate correlates of bluetongue incidence in southern Portugal.

Model forecasts of the spatiotemporal occurrence dynamics of diseases are necessary and can help understand and thus manage future disease outbreaks. In our study, we used ecological niche modelling to assess the impact of climate on the vector suitability for bluetongue disease, a disease affecting livestock production with important economic consequences. Specifically, we investigated the relationship between the occurrence of bluetongue outbreaks and the environmental suitability of each of the four vector species studied.

Long-term Oral Suppressive Antimicrobial Therapy in Infective Endocarditis (SATIE Study): An Observational Study.

Background: The role of suppressive antimicrobial therapy (SAT) in infective endocarditis (IE) management has yet to be defined. The objective of this study was to describe the use of SAT in an IE referral center and the patients' outcomes.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study in a French IE referral center (Paris).

Inferring biotic interactions from species co-occurrence patterns has long intrigued ecologists. Yet recent research revealed that co-occurrences may not reliably represent pairwise biotic interactions. We propose that examining network-level co-occurrence patterns can provide valuable insights into community structure and assembly.

Human disturbances affect the topology of food webs.

Networks describe nodes connected by links, with numbers of links per node, the degree, forming a range of distributions including random and scale-free. How network topologies emerge in natural systems still puzzles scientists. Based on previous theoretical simulations, we predict that scale-free food webs are favourably selected by random disturbances while random food webs are selected by targeted disturbances.

Total Lesion Glycolysis Improves Tumor Burden Evaluation and Risk Assessment at Diagnosis in Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a hematological malignancy with an excellent prognosis. However, we still need to identify those patients that could experience failed standard frontline chemotherapy. Tumor burden evaluation and standard decisions are based on Ann Arbor (AA) staging, but this approach may be insufficient in predicting outcomes.

Synchronous bilateral breast cancer treated with a 3-week hypofractionated radiotherapy schedule: clinical and dosimetric outcomes.

Background And Purpose: Synchronous bilateral breast cancer (SBBC) accounts for 1-3.5% of breast cancer patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate dosimetric issues, clinical outcomes, and acute toxicities for SBBC patients receiving synchronous bilateral hypofractionated radiotherapy (SBHRT) and to compare them with patients treated with synchronous bilateral normofractionated RT schedule (SBNRT).

The red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a parameter available from an automated blood count, which measures the degree of heterogeneity of erythrocyte volume and increases in inflammatory conditions. The prognostic role of RDW has been described in different types of cancers. Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a hematological malignancy, known to have a proinflammatory background.

The assessment of sex is of immense relevance in the analysis of human skeletal remains, as other parameters of the biological profile are usually sex-specific (e.g., age at death or stature).

Species traits, patch turnover and successional dynamics: when does intermediate disturbance favour metapopulation occupancy?

Background: In fragmented landscapes, natural and anthropogenic disturbances coupled with successional processes result in the destruction and creation of habitat patches. Disturbances are expected to reduce metapopulation occupancy for species associated with stable habitats, but they may benefit species adapted to transitory habitats by maintaining a dynamic mosaic of successional stages. However, while early-successional species may be favoured by very frequent disturbances resetting successional dynamics, metapopulation occupancy may be highest at intermediate disturbance levels for species with mid-successional habitat preferences, though this may be conditional on species traits and patch network characteristics.

Effectiveness of fentanyl pectin nasal citrate in controlling episodes of breakthrough cancer pain triggered by routine radiotherapy procedures.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of fentanyl pectin nasal spray (FPNS) in controlling procedural breakthrough cancer pain (BTCP) in advanced cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy.

Materials And Methods: This study involved 62 advanced cancer patients, with well-controlled background pain, who presented BTCP associated to routine radiotherapy procedures, treated with FPNS according to our protocol of administration. The BPE intensity was measured using a visual analog scale (VAS).

Complete response associated with lenalidomide and celecoxib in a case of primary refractory Hodgkin lymphoma.

Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) represents ~11% of all lymphoma cases. This disease occurs in young adults, but also affects people over 55 years of age. Despite the fact that >80% of all newly diagnosed patients under 60 will achieve a sustained complete response (CR), 5%-10% of HL patients are refractory to initial treatment and 10%-30% of patients will eventually relapse after an initial CR.

Integrative approaches to guide conservation decisions: Using genomics to define conservation units and functional corridors.

Climate change and increasing habitat loss greatly impact species survival, requiring range shifts, phenotypic plasticity and/or evolutionary change for long-term persistence, which may not readily occur unaided in threatened species. Therefore, defining conservation actions requires a detailed assessment of evolutionary factors. Existing genetic diversity needs to be thoroughly evaluated and spatially mapped to define conservation units (CUs) in an evolutionary context, and we address that here.

Radiation therapy overcomes adverse prognostic role of cyclooxygenase-2 expression on Reed-Sternberg cells in early Hodgkin lymphoma.

Purpose: To analyze the role of radiation therapy (RT) on the adverse prognostic influence of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression on Reed-Sternberg (RS) cells, in the setting of early Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) treated with ABVD (adriamycin, vinblastine, bleomycin, dacarbazine).

Methods And Materials: In the present study we retrospectively investigated the prognostic value of COX-2 expression in a large (n=143), uniformly treated early HL population from the Spanish Network of HL using tissue microarrays. Univariate and multivariate analyses were done, including the most recognized clinical variables and the potential role of administration of adjuvant RT.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in the older.

The incidence of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLCL) in the older is growing to the point of becoming a health priority in the next decades. Prognostic factors and the biology of the tumor are not very different between younger and older populations. Furthermore, it seems that the response rate is basically similar in both populations, provided an appropriate dose of chemotherapy is administered.

[Lipoid proteinosis].

Lipoid proteinosis is an infrequent disease characterized by the deposition of a PAS-positive diastase-resistant hyaline material in the skin and respiratory tract, although it can also be deposited in internal organs, in a generally asymptomatic manner. The earliest clinical manifestation is hoarseness. Clinical cutaneous manifestations come later, in the form of hyperkeratotic lesions located on the trunk, elbows, axillae, groins, backs of hands, palms and soles.

Twenty-three years of Klebsiella phage typing: a review of phage typing of 12 clusters of nosocomial infections, and a comparison of phage typing with K serotyping.

Objective: To review phage typing of 12 clusters of nosocomial Klebsiella infections which occurred between 1974 and 1997, and to compare phage typing and K serotyping. Materials and methods A total of 489 clinical and laboratory Klebsiella isolates were phage typed using 110 different phage preparations and K typed by counter current immunoelectrophoresis against 77 K antisera.

Results: A total of 152 phage types (PT) and 82 K types were found.
