Use of online educational resources before and during the COVID-19 era in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Restrictions to traditional face-to-face meetings were mandated by many government authorities during the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting the delivery of educational training sessions for maxillofacial surgery trainees in the traditional group manner. An online survey was designed to review what effect the pandemic had on the use and uptake of online educational sources amongst a representative cohort of maxillofacial surgery trainees in higher specialist training. Their attitudes and satisfaction with online resources were considered.

Changing trends in the management of condylar fractures.

Our aim was to evaluate the functional outcomes and complications of mandibular condylar fractures managed surgically and non-surgically. Patients were identified retrospectively from audit data and clinical records from 2005-2018, and functional outcomes were evaluated based on the development of complications at clinical follow up. Patients were categorised into three treatment groups: conservative (management with soft diet, analgesia, and monitoring), closed (management with intermaxillary fixation), and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF).

Positional Variation of the Infraorbital Foramen in Caucasians and Black Africans from Britain: Surgical Relevance and Comparison to the Existing Literature.

Background: Midface augmentation and orbital surgery carry an inherent risk of injury to the infraorbital vascular bundle, especially the infraorbital nerve where it exits the infraorbital foramen (IOF). This can result in significant morbidity for the patient, including paresthesia and neuralgia. Studies report significant heterogeneity in IOF position according to gender, ethnicity, and laterality.

Chair side measuring instrument for quantification of the extent of a transverse maxillary occlusal plane cant.

Background: Treatment planning the correction of a transverse maxillary occlusal plane cant often involves a degree of qualitative "eyeballing", with the attendant possibility of error in the estimated judgement. A simple chair side technique permits quantification of the extent of asymmetry and thereby quantitative measurements for the correction of the occlusal plane cant.

Methods: A measuring instrument may be constructed by soldering the edge of a stainless steel dental ruler at 90° to the flat surface of a similar ruler.

A morphometric analysis of the suitability of the transverse cervical artery as a recipient artery in head and neck free flap microvascular reconstruction.

Purpose: Gold standard recipient arteries in head and neck free flap microvascular reconstruction are currently branches of the external carotid. However, these arteries can be compromised by neck dissection or radiotherapy, resulting in 'vessel-depleted neck' and 'frozen neck' respectively. In such cases, the transverse cervical artery (TCA) may be a suitable recipient artery.

Customized headgear for the management of recurrent temporomandibular joint dislocations.

Chronic recurrent temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation is both an uncommon and debilitating condition of the facial skeleton. Various conservative management strategies have been tried, but these have often been associated with poor and transient outcomes. The use of a simple, innovative, and non-invasive solution is presented herein.

Proposed three-dimensional model of the orbit and relevance to orbital fracture repair.

Purpose: To describe the relationship of the orbital rim and depth in Far Eastern skulls by anatomical study, using morphometry to yield an octagonal three-dimensional model of the orbit.

Methods: Forty-one orbits of 21 Far Eastern skulls from the Department of Anatomy of St George's, University of London were included in this study. A morphometric study was conducted, measuring between eight reproducible orbital rim landmarks to yield perimeters, and from these landmarks to the optic canal to yield orbital depth.

Secondary merkel cell carcinoma manifested in the parotid.

Background. Merkel cell carcinoma of the head and neck is a rare and aggressive malignant tumour. Both the dermatological and surgical colleagues should be aware of this entity as lesions usually present on sun exposed areas of the skin such as the head and neck.

Ludwig's Angina: The Original Angina.

Ludwig's angina was first detailed by the German surgeon Wilhelm Friedrich von Ludwig in 1836. We present a case which needed awake fibreoptic intubation due to severe trismus and a prolonged period intubated in the Intensive Care Unit after incision and drainage of neck spaces and removal of his lower wisdom teeth. He was finally discharged a week after admission and followed up in the outpatient clinic.

A survey of self-assessed surgical competencies with respect to qualifications, training and working patterns of members on the oral surgery register.

Aims: This study surveyed members of the Oral Surgery (OS) register and requested a self assessment of their surgical competencies with regard to both core and extended procedures, as defined by the OS curriculum. Details of education, training backgrounds and working patterns were also requested.

Methods: Members of the OS register were identified on the General Dental Council website and mailed a questionnaire.

A diagnostic dilemma of intracranial pathology: coincidence or the result of cranial trauma?

A 21-year-old man presented to the accident and emergency department at St Peter's Hospital, London, in September 2008. Following consumption of alcohol, the patient had been assaulted and had experienced facial trauma. Later, the patient had a witnessed generalised tonic-clonic seizure and the next day noted weakness of the right leg.

Development and validation of the Physician-Patient Humor Rating Scale.

The purpose of this study was the development of a rating instrument to assess the use of humor in physician- patient interactions, and to compare humor use as a function of patients' socioeconomic status. The 46-item Physician-Patient Humor Rating Scale (PPHRS) was used to rate 246 audiotaped primary care interactions. Four subscales were reliable and valid, demonstrating correlations with patient satisfaction and reports of physician humor, with physician satisfaction and with separate affective communication ratings.

Surgical salvage therapy for malignant intrathoracic metastases from nonseminomatous germ cell cancer of testicular origin: analysis of a single-institution experience.

Background: Cisplatin-based chemotherapy followed by surgical extirpation of residual benign disease represents the usual sequence of curative therapy for metastatic nonseminomatous germ cell cancer of testicular origin. Occasionally, residual disease is malignant in the form of either a persistent nonseminomatous germ cell cancer tumor or degeneration into non-germ cell cancer. We reviewed our institution's experience with patients undergoing salvage operations to remove malignant intrathoracic metastases.

Perceptual correlates of neural representations evoked by odorant enantiomers.

Spatial activation patterns within the olfactory bulb are believed to contribute to the neural representation of odorants. In this study, we attempted to predict the perceptions of odorants from their evoked patterns of neural activity in the olfactory bulb. We first describe the glomerular activation patterns evoked by pairs of odorant enantiomers based on the uptake of [(14)C]2-deoxyglucose in the olfactory bulb glomerular layer.
