EF24, a schistosomicidal curcumin analog: Insights from its synthesis and phenotypic, biochemical and cytotoxic activities.

Article Synopsis

Praziquantel (PZQ) is the only current drug used to control schistosomiasis, but researchers are evaluating a synthetic curcumin analog called EF24 for its effectiveness against Schistosoma mansoni.
EF24 showed significant schistosomicidal activity, being more potent than PZQ against certain worm isolates, particularly in inducing harmful changes in the parasites at low concentrations.
The compound was found to increase oxidative stress in the worms while being less toxic to mammalian cells, suggesting it may be a promising candidate for further development in treating schistosomiasis.

Organogels (ORGs) are remarkable matrices due to their versatile chemical composition and straightforward preparation. This study proposes the development of ORGs as dual drug-carrier systems, considering the application of synthetic monoketonic curcuminoid (m-CUR) and lidocaine (LDC) to treat topical inflammatory lesions. The monoketone curcuminoid (m-CUR) was synthesized by using an innovative method via a NbCl-acid catalysis.
