Test cricketers score quickly during the 'nervous nineties': Evidence from a regression discontinuity design.

The 'nervous nineties' is a well-known cricket colloquialism that implies that batting within reach of 100 runs is mentally demanding. Despite common acceptance of this phenomenon, no study has used a historical test cricket dataset to examine how batting behaviour and performance changes on approach to a century. Accordingly, we explored opensource ball-by-ball data from 712 test cricket matches played between 2004 and 2022 to model the regression discontinuity of batting performance metrics either side of 100 runs.

Values and cognitive mechanisms: Comparing the predictive factors of Australian meat intake.

Recent studies have found values for animal-welfare, personal-health and the environment to be the main factors motivating veg*n diets. However, studies are yet to simultaneously compare these values between Australian meat-eaters, vegetarians, and vegans, and therefore, the extent to which they motivate these groups. Further, while cognitive mechanisms (methods of reducing the psychological discomfort of eating meat while holding such values) have been found to facilitate meat intake, these mechanisms are yet to be compared against values in their ability to predict meat consumption.

Identifying Future Health Professionals' Understanding of the Determinants of Health.

Background: An understanding of the determinants of health is essential for all health professionals to be able to contribute to health promotion and disease prevention.

Method: This project sought to explore first-year students' understanding of determinants of health through a photograph essay assessment.

Results: Approximately one third of the students chose to depict social determinants of health, such as poverty and homelessness.

'Being in the know': Nurses' perspectives on the role of 'end-of-shift' verbal handover.

Aim: To explore and qualitatively review 'end-of-shift' verbal communication practices and processes; and to further develop a core theoretical construction of nurses' perspectives on handover in contemporary Australian clinical settings.

Method: The following study will report the results from phase 1 of a two-phase study examining the Australian nurse's perspective of verbal handover. The data were gathered over a 2-month period in 2013 for phase 1 of the study.
