Mixed vestibular schwannoma and meningioma without neurofibromatosis.

The co-existence of meningioma and schwannoma as 2 distinct histologic components within the same tumor has been described in neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2), but the co-existence of both tumors without evidence of NF2 is much rarer. Here, we are reporting a case of mixed schwannoma with meningioma without clinical evidence of NF2. In an adult Saudi lady with progressive left-sided hearing loss, left cerebellopontine tumor was diagnosed by MRI, and the histopathological diagnosis revealed that this tumor was composed of vestibular schwannoma and meningioma.

Surgical treatment of 13 pediatric patients with Dandy-Walker syndrome.

We present our experience with the treatment of 13 patients with Dandy-Walker syndrome. The common presenting symptom and associated central nervous system anomaly were enlargement of head and occipital encephalocele, respectively. Eleven out of 13 patients were treated surgically after stabilization of systemic medical status.

Is spinal instrumentation a risk factor for late-onset infection in cases of distant infection or surgery? Case report.

As a cause of revision spinal surgery, spinal epidural abscess after instrumentation-assisted fusion is rare in neurosurgical practice. Postoperative infections are frequently seen in the time period soon after surgery. The authors report on the case of a 45-year-old woman who had undergone posterior instrumentation-augmented fusion for L4-5 degenerative spondylolisthesis.

Histopathologic effects of discitis on neural tissues: an experimental study.

To determine the cause of neurologic symptoms and signs seen in discitis, the neural histopathologic effects of discitis were investigated in an experimental study carried out on rats. Groups of seven rats each had their intervertebral discs inoculated with either Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or a control solution. Histopathologic examinations of the spinal cord and nerve roots were performed after 3 weeks.

Factors affecting reduction in low-grade lumbosacral spondylolisthesis.

Object: Lumbosacral spondylolisthesis (LSS) is a common disorder that often requires a stabilization and fusion procedure. The aim of this study was to determine the early neuroimaging-detected results of instrumentation-assisted (in situ) fusion with no attempt at surgical reduction of the deformity in patients with low-grade LSS. The neuroimaging results were evaluated to determine the extent of reduction and its correlation with different parameters.

Anatomical and computed tomographic analysis of C1 vertebra.

Craniovertebral junction surgery requires knowledge regarding the anatomy of this region, particularly the C1 vertebra. Both C1 laminectomy and C1-2 instrumentation necessitate preoperative information about bony landmarks and the vertebral artery. This study compares the results obtained from anatomic and computed tomographic measurements of C1 bony landmarks.

Functional anatomy of the spine by Avicenna in his eleventh century treatise Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb (The Canons of Medicine).

The history of spinal surgery is an important part of the spine-related sciences. The development of treatment strategies for spine-related disorders is acquired from the Western literature. In this article, an Eastern physician, Ibn Sina, who is known as Avicenna in the West, and his treatise, Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb (the Canons of Medicine), are presented.

Simultaneous cervical and lumbar surgery for combined symptomatic cervical and lumbar spinal stenoses.

Spinal stenosis may rarely involve both cervical and lumbar spines. An alternative surgical strategy used for the treatment of combined cervical and lumbar spinal stenosis is presented. Two cases with symptomatic combined stenosis of the cervical and lumbar spinal canal are described.
