Background: Senegal has made significant progress in reducing the burden of malaria, but transmission remains highly heterogeneous, with specific population subgroups likely at higher risk. Consultations with the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) and a review of available data identified nomadic pastoralists, gold miners, and Koranic school students as potential high-risk populations (HRPs). This study aimed to evaluate whether these populations are at higher risk of malaria and better characterize their exposure patterns to inform the design of targeted intervention strategies.

Aim: Extending faecal immunochemical tests for haemoglobin (FIT) to all primary care patients with symptoms suggestive of colorectal cancer (CRC) could identify people who are likely to benefit from colonoscopy and facilitate earlier treatment. The aim of this work was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of FIT across different analysers at different thresholds, as a single test or in duplicate (dual FIT).

Method: This systematic review and meta-analysis searched 10 sources (December 2022).

Introduction: Breast pain is not typically a symptom of breast cancer, yet nationally 20% of 2-week wait (2WW) breast referrals are breast pain alone. The East Midlands Breast Pain Pathway improves patient experience and frees capacity in secondary care diagnostic breast clinics, managing women with breast pain only in a community setting. We report the results of implementation of community breast pain clinics (CBPCs) at sites in Derbyshire (catchment population ~1 million), with 12 months follow-up data.

Introduction/objectives: The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) helps triage primary care patients at risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). Improving FIT returns has received recent attention, however uncertainty exists regarding the accurate completion of samples provided for laboratory analysis. This study aims to identify the rejection rate of returned FIT samples and determine rejection causes.

The concentration of Ca in plant feed ingredients is low compared with the requirement for pigs and most Ca in diets for pigs is provided by limestone and Ca phosphate. To determine digestibility values for Ca that are additive in mixed diets, the standardized total tract digestibility (STTD) of Ca needs to be calculated, and the STTD of Ca by growing pigs in most Ca-containing ingredients has been reported. Although Ca is an inexpensive nutrient compared with P and amino acids, excess Ca needs to be avoided because excess dietary Ca results in reduced P digestibility, reduced feed intake, and reduced growth performance of pigs.

Background: Māori and Pacific peoples (MPP) in New Zealand (NZ) have poorer health outcomes than other ethnicities. However, this has not been clinically investigated in multiple myeloma (MM). Using data from the Australian and NZ Myeloma and Related Diseases Registry for all participating centers in NZ, we compared MPP demographics, clinical characteristics, diagnostics, treatment, and outcomes to non-MPP.

Background: Surgical trainees experience intrinsic stress and anxiety during high-acuity clinical situations which can negatively impact performance. Emerging data suggests that education in mindfulness-based coping techniques may improve performance. We evaluated the effects of a stress recovery intervention on novice trainees' perceived level of anxiety during an intentionally stressful simulation.

Background: Few published articles have focused on identifying the gaps in care that follow a malnutrition diagnosis and their effects on length of stay (LOS) and 90-day readmission. We hypothesized that length of stay and readmission were associated with these gaps in care.

Methods: Two registered dietitians retrospectively reviewed charts of 229 adult malnourished patients admitted to a medicine unit to determine their system level gap in care: communication, test delay, or discharge planning.

Background: As described in detail in the literature, patients identified with malnutrition are at increased risk for poor clinical outcomes. Despite this knowledge, malnourished patients do not always receive optimal nutrition management while admitted into a hospital because of what we describe as gaps in care throughout their admission. We hypothesized that the 3 main gaps in care were poor dietitian-doctor communication, excessive time spent nil per os (NPO) for procedures and testing, and/or inaccurate or incomplete dietary discharge instructions.

An experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that the requirement for standardized total tract digestible (STTD) Ca by pigs from 100 to 130 kg depends on the concentration of STTD P in the diet. Ninety pigs (average initial BW: 99.89 ± 3.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate particle size of calcium carbonate used in diets fed to growing pigs. Experiment 1 was conducted to determine apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD), standardized total tract digestibility (STTD), and retention of Ca among diets containing calcium carbonate produced to different particle sizes, and Exp. 2 was conducted to determine if growth performance of weanling pigs is affected by particle size of calcium carbonate.

An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of supplementing diets fed to growing pigs with fat sources differing in their composition of fatty acids on the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of minerals. A diet based on corn, potato protein isolate, and 7% sucrose was formulated. Five additional diets that were similar to the previous diet with the exception that sucrose was replaced by 7% tallow, choice white grease, palm oil, corn oil, or soybean oil were also formulated.

Background: There is little existing research on the role that secondary care letters have in ensuring patient understanding of chronic health conditions.

Aim: To determine whether minimising the use of medical terminology in medical correspondence improved patient understanding and anxiety/depression scores.

Methods: A single-centre, non-blinded, randomised crossover design assessed health literacy, EQ-5D scores and the impact of the 'translated' letter on the doctor's professionalism, the patient's relationship with their general practitioner (GP) and their perceived impact on chronic disease management.

Background: In 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics revised practice parameters regarding febrile urinary tract infection (fUTI) in children aged 2-24 months. The Section on Urology opposed the omission of voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG), and expressed concern that potential untoward consequences of deferring VCUG may be most felt by children on Medicaid.

Objective: We ascertained imaging and characteristics of children presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) with initial fUTI to determine the impact of patient demographics on admissions for pyelonephritis.

Background: Patients diagnosed with cancer in the context of an emergency presentation (EP) have poorer outcomes. It is often assumed that such patients present to the emergency department without consulting their general practitioner (GP). Little work has been done to identify primary care involvement before hospital attendance.

Purpose: Surgical correction of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is influenced by recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI) risk and the likelihood of spontaneous resolution. We aimed to identify factors associated with VUR resolution in children less than 2 years of age and to design a simple scoring tool to predict improvement and resolution.

Materials And Methods: Children less than 2 years old with primary VUR were identified.

Purpose: In 2011 the AAP revised practice parameters on febrile urinary tract infection in infants and children 2 to 24 months old. New imaging recommendations invigorated the ongoing debate regarding the diagnosis and management of vesicoureteral reflux. We compared evaluations in these patients with febrile urinary tract infection before and after guideline publication.
