This work evaluates the dry sliding behavior of anodic aluminum oxides (AAO) formed during one traditional hard anodizing treatment (HA) and two golden hard anodizing treatments (named G and GP, respectively) on a EN AW-6060 aluminum alloy. The peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) with Lu-DOTA-octreotate (LuTate) is recommended for different types of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) which overexpress somatostatin receptors (SSTR). A combination with chemotherapy improves objective response to LuTate in NET patients and here we characterized chemotherapy-induced upregulation of SSTR2 receptors as a cause for this improved response to LuTate. The NET cell lines with low (BON-1) or relatively high (NCI-H727) SSTR2-expression levels, and non-NET cancer and normal cells were treated with chemotherapeutic drugs and assessed for upregulation of SSTR2.

Plant viruses are natural, self-assembling nanostructures with versatile and genetically programmable shells, making them useful in diverse applications ranging from the development of new materials to diagnostics and therapeutics. Here, we describe the design and synthesis of plant virus nanoparticles displaying peptides associated with two different autoimmune diseases. Using animal models, we show that the recombinant nanoparticles can prevent autoimmune diabetes and ameliorate rheumatoid arthritis.

The study of causes and cures for ultraviolet B radiation (UVB)-induced non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) has been greatly facilitated by use of the albino SKH-1 hairless mice. These mice develop multiple tumors of different sizes and the severity of cancer is often measured by one or more of the four criteria, namely the prevalence, multiplicity, area and volume of tumors. However, there are inherent limitations of each criterion: the prevalence and number do not account for size differences among tumors, area measurement ignores the tumor height, and volume measurement overcompensates for the height at the cost of planar dimensions.

Type-1 diabetes (T1D) is a metabolic disease involving the autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. It is often diagnosed by the detection of autoantibodies, typically those recognizing insulin itself or the 65-kDa isoform of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65). Oral insulin can be used to induce systemic immunological tolerance and thus prevent or delay the onset of T1D, suggesting that combination treatments with other autoantigens such as GAD65 could be even more successful.

The USA is experiencing an epidemic of drug overdoses and deaths with a 200% increase in overdose deaths involving opioids including heroin. Legislation since 2013 has created paths to reduce opioid overdose deaths and since, basic life support (BLS) and police agencies have been administering naloxone to patients with suspected opioid overdoses as part of standard treatment protocols. Charts were reviewed from 1 January 2016 to 15 April 2016 on the de-identified electronic medical records of patients in a two-county system comprising the 'Jersey Shore' who received naloxone to determine the number of naloxone administrations and heroin overdoses.
