Necessity of vancomycin trough concentrations to manage uncomplicated acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections: a laboratory stewardship analysis.

Background: Recent recommendations by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists and Infectious Disease Society of America have provided guidance regarding vancomycin dosing and monitoring in serious infections (including methicillin-resistant ); however, trough monitoring for uncomplicated acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) were not addressed. Vancomycin use appears to lead to a low incidence of acute kidney injury with short durations and a low trough goal (10-15 mg/L). Nevertheless, clinical studies have found no difference in clinical outcomes for ABSSSI regardless of vancomycin level.

Lifetime impact of achondroplasia study in Europe (LIAISE): findings from a multinational observational study.

Background: Achondroplasia, caused by a pathogenic variant in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 gene, is the most common skeletal dysplasia. The Lifetime Impact of Achondroplasia Study in Europe (LIAISE; NCT03449368) aimed to quantify the burden of achondroplasia among individuals across a broad range of ages, including adults.

Methods: Demographic, clinical and healthcare resource use data were collected from medical records of achondroplasia patients enrolled in 13 sites across six European countries in this retrospective, observational study.

Objective: The various basal insulin products possess differences in pharmacokinetics that can significantly impact glycemic control and total daily basal insulin dosing. In addition, there will be instances where transitions between the different long-acting insulins will need to be made. Because every basal insulin product is not interchangeable on a 1:1 unit-to-unit basis, it is important for health care providers to understand the expected dose adjustments necessary to maintain a similar level of glycemic control.

Here we report the successful preparation of (CHNH)CuBr thin films with a zero-dimensional molecular salt structure featuring "isolated" [CuBr] ions. Time-resolved broadband PL measurements provide an excited-state lifetime of 114 μs at 298 K.

Clinical charts for surveillance of growth and body proportion development in achondroplasia and examples of their use.

Clinical surveillance of infants and children with achondroplasia necessitates syndrome-specific charts due to extreme short stature with deviating body proportions. Height, arm span and leg length develop far below normal population ranges. We present growth and body proportion charts for ages 0-20 years, constructed from semi-longitudinal standardized measurements of about 450 children, along with some examples of achondroplasia typical and atypical growth pattern.

Impact of body mass index on relapse in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia treated according to Nordic treatment protocols.

Objectives: High body mass index (BMI) is associated with poorer survival in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), but the actual impact on the risk of relapse still needs to be clarified. We evaluated the impact of BMI at diagnosis on the risk of relapse in children with ALL treated according to Nordic Society of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology (NOPHO) protocols.

Method: In a multicenter study, we collected data on BMI at diagnosis and outcome of 2558 children aged 2.

Defining the clinical phenotype of Saul-Wilson syndrome.

Purpose: Four patients with Saul-Wilson syndrome were reported between 1982 and 1994, but no additional individuals were described until 2018, when the molecular etiology of the disease was elucidated. Hence, the clinical phenotype of the disease remains poorly defined. We address this shortcoming by providing a detailed characterization of its phenotype.

Development of body proportions in achondroplasia: Sitting height, leg length, arm span, and foot length.

The aims of this study was to construct references for sitting height, leg length, arm span, relative sitting height (sitting height/height), and foot length and to discuss the development for these anthropometric variables in achondroplasia. Sex-specific references covering ±2 SD are presented for ages 2-20 years. Legs and arms in achondroplasia are already at 2 years of age considerably shorter than in the general population and this deviation increases with age.

Mucosal Gene Expression in Pediatric and Adult Patients With Ulcerative Colitis Permits Modeling of Ideal Biopsy Collection Strategy for Transcriptomic Analysis.

Background: Transcriptional profiling has been performed on biopsies from ulcerative colitis patients. Limitations in prior studies include the variability introduced by inflammation, anatomic site of biopsy, extent of disease, and medications. We sought to more globally understand the variability of gene expression from patients with ulcerative colitis to advance our understanding of its pathogenesis and to guide clinical study design.

Growth in achondroplasia: Development of height, weight, head circumference, and body mass index in a European cohort.

As growth references for achondroplasia are limited to reports from United States, Japan, Argentina, and Australia, the aim of this study was to construct growth references for height, weight, head circumference, and body mass index (BMI) from a European cohort of children with achondroplasia and to discuss the development of these anthropometric variables. A mix of cross-sectional and longitudinal, retrospective, and prospective data from 466 children with achondroplasia and 4,375 measuring occasions were modeled with generalized additive model for location, scale and shape (GAMLSS) to sex-specific references for ages 0 to 20 years. Loss in height position, that is, reduction in height standard deviation scores, occurred mainly during first 2 years of life while pubertal growth seemed normal if related to adult height.

Legalization of Medicinal Marijuana Has Minimal Impact on Use Patterns in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Background: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have reported use of marijuana to treat symptoms of the disease, yet its classification as a Schedule 1 substance by the federal government has restricted its use. In 2012, Massachusetts legalized medicinal marijuana. We aimed to assess the impact of legalization on use in IBD.

Renal effects of non-tenofovir antiretroviral therapy in patients living with HIV.

A review of literature published regarding non-tenofovir antiretroviral agents causing renal adverse effects was conducted. The literature involving renal adverse effects and antiretroviral therapy is most robust with protease inhibitors, specifically atazanavir and indinavir, and includes reports of crystalluria, leukocyturia, nephritis, nephrolithiasis, nephropathy and urolithiasis. Several case reports describe potential nephropathy (including Fanconi syndrome) secondary to administration of abacavir, didanosine, lamivudine and stavudine.

Being born small for gestational age (SGA) in length is a sign of growth failure due to malnutrition in pregnancy or other serious disorders. In previous publications it was shown that SGA born neonates may experience a compensatory growth spurt (catch-up growth) in infancy and childhood (Olbertz et al. in press).

Effectiveness of Single- and Multiple-Tablet Antiretroviral Regimens in Correctional Setting for Treatment-Experienced HIV Patients.

Minimal information is available regarding antiretroviral prescribing patterns and outcomes for HIV patients in correctional systems. This study analyzes single- (STR) and multiple- (MTR) tablet regimen effectiveness in patients receiving HIV telemedicine care through the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC). This study involves a retrospective review of HIV-positive adult patients in IDOC on either an STR (efavirenz, rilpivirine, elvitegravir based) or an MTR (emtricitabine/tenofovir with atazanavir/ritonavir, darunavir/ritonavir, or raltegravir).

The purpose of this study was to comparatively analyze the genetic diversity of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) using agro-morphological and molecular markers. Twelve sesame populations collected from three regions in Cambodia and Vietnam were used in this study.

Endoscopic double-pulse electronic-speckle-pattern interferometer for technical and medical intracavity inspection.

An endoscope electronic-speckle-pattern interferometer (ESPI) camera system is presented that can be applied to examinations of technical objects as well as for in vitro and in vivo minimal invasive medical diagnostics. Integration of optical fibers for the guidance of a cw-laser beam and an endoscopic imaging system yield a compact ESPI system that opens up new possibilities for highly sensitive interferometric intracavity inspection under handheld conditions. A CCD camera in combination with a fast frame-grabber system allows dynamic image subtractions at a frequency rate of as much as 25 Hz with high fringe contrast.

Powdery mildew resistance in 155 Nordic bread wheat cultivars and landraces.

The occurrence and distribution of seedling resistance genes and the presence of adult plant resistance to powdery mildew, was investigated in a collection of 155 Nordic bread wheat landraces and cultivars by inoculation with 11 powdery mildew isolates. Eighty-nine accessions were susceptible in the seedling stage, while 66 accessions showed some resistance. Comparisons of response patterns allowed postulation of combinations of genes Pm1a, Pm2, Pm4b, Pm5, Pm6, Pm8 and Pm9 in 21 lines.
