The decision to build a nuclear reactor test facility in the 1950's in Dounreay/Caithness UK, as well as the current phase of decommissioning impacted not only the technology development but also the social fabric of the community and individuals within it. Many coastal ecosystems, such as coral reefs and seagrass meadows, currently experience overgrowth by fleshy algae due to the interplay of local and global stressors. This is usually accompanied by strong decreases in habitat complexity and biodiversity. Recently, persistent, mat-forming fleshy red algae, previously described for the Black Sea and several Atlantic locations, have also been observed in the Mediterranean.

The successful implementation of disarmament treaties of the last centuries has led to significant amounts of weapon-grade Plutonium which are currently stored in high security storage facilities. Disposing this Plutonium should be seen as 'good housekeeping' avoiding unnecessary costs and the hazards of storing this material indefinitely. In addition, the disarmament is only brought to a successful end when the Plutonium isn't available for the production of new weapons anymore.

Background: Fractures in osteoporotic patients can be difficult to treat because of poor bone quality and inability to gain screw purchase. The purpose of this study is to compare modern lateral periarticular distal fibula locked plating to antiglide plating in the setting of an osteoporotic, unstable distal fibula fracture.

Methods: AO/OTA 44-B2 distal fibula fractures were created in sixteen paired fresh frozen cadaveric ankles and fixed with a lateral locking plate and an independent lag screw or an antiglide plate with a lag screw through the plate.

Peptide amphiphile (PA) nanofibers formed by self-assembly can be customized for specific applications in regenerative medicine through the use of molecules that display bioactive signals on their surfaces. Here, the use of PA nanofibers with binding affinity for the bone promoting growth factor BMP-2 to create a gel scaffold for osteogenesis is reported. With the objective of reducing the amount of BMP-2 used clinically for successful arthrodesis in the spine, amounts of growth factor incorporated in the scaffolds that are 10 to 100 times lower than that those used clinically in collagen scaffolds are used.

We present the architecture and a detailed pre-fabrication analysis of a digital measurement ASIC facilitating long-term irradiation experiments of basic asynchronous circuits, which also demonstrates the suitability of the general approach for obtaining accurate radiation failure models developed in our FATAL project. Our ASIC design combines radiation targets like Muller C-elements and elastic pipelines as well as standard combinational gates and flip-flops with an elaborate on-chip measurement infrastructure. Major architectural challenges result from the fact that the latter must operate reliably under the same radiation conditions the target circuits are exposed to, without wasting precious die area for a rad-hard design.

In the view of transmutation of transuranium (TRU) elements, molten salt fast reactors (MSFRs) offer certain advantages compared to solid fuelled reactor types like sodium cooled fast reactors (SFRs). In the first part these advantages are discussed in comparison with the SFR technology, and the research challenges are analyzed. In the second part cycle studies for the MSFR are given for different configurations--a core with U-238 fertile, a fertile free core, and a core with Th-232 as fertile material.

Chromatin modifications are long known as an essential part of the orchestrated response resulting in the repair of radiation-induced DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Only recently, however, the influence of the chromatin architecture itself on the DNA damage response has been recognised. Thus for heterochromatic DSBs the sensing and early recruitment of repair factors to the lesion occurs within the heterochromatic compartments, but the damage sites are subsequently relocated from the inside to the outside of the heterochromatin.

Background: Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly aggressive malignant primary brain tumor, characterized by rapid growth, diffuse infiltration of cells into both adjacent and remote brain regions, and a generalized resistance to currently available treatment modalities. During recent years, specialized wards have been established in geriatric hospital departments as a consequence of the growing need of special care for acutely ill older patients, who are also cognitively impaired. However, there are neither established standards nor any commonly agreed concept of care. A written survey among 12 specialized wards in Germany revealed some characteristics of these wards: extended geriatric assessment, special education of staff including validation and gerontopsychiatric issues, and particular equipment/architecture, such as hidden doors and group rooms, and in some cases loop tracks for walking, therapeutic facilities, and 'living rooms' on the wards.

Objective: This cadaveric biomechanical study compared the mechanical properties of standard plating (SP), locked plating (LP), intramedullary nailing (IMN), and angular stable intramedullary nailing (ASN) for the treatment of axially unstable distal tibia metaphyseal fractures (OTA type 43.A3) with an intact fibula.

We present a case of 39-year-old female with a scapulothoracic dissociation and acromioclavicular (AC) separation and who had fixation of the AC joint with a locking plate, coracoclavicular screw, and transarticular AC screw. The coracoclavicular and AC relationships were maintained during postoperative rehabilitation and after hardware removal. Use of a locking plate can lead to good functional outcome without the complications associated with the use of pin and wire constructs or without violating the subacromial space.

Dislocation of the proximal tibiofibular joint (PTFJ) in association with a displaced tibial shaft fracture and an intact fibula is an exceedingly rare injury. We present 2 cases of tibia fractures associated with an intact fibula and a PTFJ dislocation. The first case involves a man who sustained a closed spiral fracture of the distal tibial shaft, with an intact fibula, an anterolaterally dislocated PTFJ, and a partial tear of the lateral collateral ligament.
