The process map of penile prosthesis implantation in outpatient surgery in Spain: a consensus document.

Penile prosthesis (PP) implantation is feasible as an outpatient surgery. The present study describes the surgical process and establishes a consensus for improving the care circuit for outpatient PP implantation in Spain. A working group composed of a scientific committee with extensive experience in PP implantation and representatives of important scientific societies reached a consensus about the recommendations for outpatient PP implantation.

Ionic Bent-Core Pillar[]arenes: From Liquid Crystals to Nanoaggregates and Functional Applications.

Herein, we report the first examples of supramolecular systems from bent-core-based pillar[]arenes through ionic bonds. These ionic materials have been prepared by the interaction of an amino-ended pillar[5]arene (P5N10) and three different carboxylic acids, including bent-core moieties. The bent-core units are based on ester, biphenyl, and azobenzene structures bearing two different flexible spacers between the carboxyl group and the central bent-core aromatic units.

The Swedish Cervical Screening Cohort.

The Cervical Screening Cohort enrols women screened for human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical abnormalities within the capital region of Sweden from the organised screening program and the non-organised testing of cervical samples. The cohort started in 2011 and has enrolled more than 670,000 women, contributing with more than 1.2 million biobanked samples.

Validation of the nutritrauma concept for the detection of potential harmful effects of medical nutritional treatment in critically ill patients in real life.

Introduction: medical nutritional treatment (MNT) can be complex and may be associated with potential metabolic complications, which has been recently described as nutritrauma. Objective: the aim of our work is to describe whether the application of the nutritrauma concept in real life is feasible and useful to detect the metabolic complications associated with the prescription of MNT. The downstream signaling of the interleukin-7 (IL-7) receptor (IL-7R) plays important physiological and pathological roles, including the differentiation of lymphoid cells and proliferation of acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells. Gain-of-function mutations in the IL-7Rα chain, the specific component of the receptor for IL-7, result in constitutive, IL-7-independent signaling and trigger acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Here, we show that the loss of the phosphoinositide 5-phosphatase INPP5K is associated with increased levels of the INPP5K substrate phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PtdIns[4,5]P2) and causes an altered dynamic structure of the IL-7 receptor.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease that affects skin and multiple internal organs. TGF-β, a central trigger of cutaneous fibrosis, activates fibroblasts with the involvement of the stress-inducible chaperone heat shock protein 90 isoform α (Hsp90α). Available evidence supports overexpression and secretion of Hsp90α as a feature in profibrotic pathological conditions.

Medication Optimization Using Pharmacogenomic Testing in a Complex Mental Health Population Prescribed Psychiatric Polypharmacy.

The use of polypharmacy has become significantly more common over the past two decades, increasing the risk of drug-drug interactions and adverse drug reactions. Pharmacogenomic (PGx) assays have the purported benefit of being able to predict an individual's response to a specific medication based on genetic markers, which may facilitate the development of optimized medication regimens for patients prescribed polypharmacy. This 12-week pilot study examined the impact of the PGx results on the clinical management of Veterans who were prescribed psychiatric polypharmacy.

CD38 Deficiency Ameliorates Chronic Graft--Host Disease Murine Lupus a B-Cell-Dependent Mechanism.

The absence of the mouse cell surface receptor CD38 in mice suggests that this receptor acts as a positive regulator of inflammatory and autoimmune responses. Here, we report that, in the context of the chronic graft--host disease (cGVHD) lupus inducible model, the transfer of B6.C-H2bm12/KhEg(bm12) spleen cells into co-isogenic B6 mice causes milder lupus-like autoimmunity with lower levels of anti-ssDNA autoantibodies than the transfer of bm12 spleen cells into WT B6 mice.

The antimalarial MMV688533 provides potential for single-dose cures with a high barrier to parasite resistance.

The emergence and spread of resistance to first-line antimalarials creates an imperative to identify and develop potent preclinical candidates with distinct modes of action. Here, we report the identification of MMV688533, an acylguanidine that was developed following a whole-cell screen with compounds known to hit high-value targets in human cells. MMV688533 displays fast parasite clearance in vitro and is not cross-resistant with known antimalarials.

Suitability of strontium and cobalt-free perovskite cathodes with LaSiAlO apatite electrolyte for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells.

Therapeutic Effects of Anti-Bone Morphogenetic Protein and Activin Membrane-Bound Inhibitor Treatment in Psoriasis and Arthritis.

Objective: The transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) inhibitor BAMBI (bone morphogenetic protein and activin membrane-bound inhibitor) has been shown to control differentiation of CD4+ T lymphocytes into either tolerogenic Treg cells or pathogenic Th17 cells, through the regulation of TGFβ and interleukin-2 (IL-2) signaling strength. The present study was undertaken to explore the potential beneficial effects of this strategy of pharmacologic inhibition using novel anti-BAMBI monoclonal antibodies (mAb) in different experimental murine models of chronic skin and joint inflammatory/autoimmune disease.

Methods: Development of Saccharomyces cerevisiae mannan-induced psoriatic arthritis (MIP) (n = 18-30 mice per group), imiquimod-induced skin psoriasis (n = 20-30 mice per group), or type II collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) (n = 13-16 mice per group) was analyzed in a total of 2-5 different experiments with either wild-type (WT) or BAMBI-deficient B10.

Multifaceted effects of soluble human CD6 in experimental cancer models.

Background: CD6 is a lymphocyte surface co-receptor physically associated with the T-cell receptor (TCR)/CD3 complex at the center of the immunological synapse. There, CD6 assists in cell-to-cell contact stabilization and modulation of activation/differentiation events through interaction with CD166/ALCAM (activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule), its main reported ligand. While accumulating evidence is attracting new interest on targeting CD6 for therapeutic purposes in autoimmune disorders, little is known on its potential in cancer.

Measuring Membrane Permeation Rates through the Optical Visualization of a Single Pore.

Membranes are a critical technology for energy-efficient separation processes. The routine method of evaluating membrane performance is a permeation measurement. However, such measurements can be limited in terms of their utility: membrane microstructure is often poorly characterized; membranes or sealants leak; and conditions in the gas phase are poorly controlled and frequently far-removed from the conditions employed in the majority of real processes.

The Synaptic Vesicle Priming Protein CAPS-1 Shapes the Adaptation of Sensory Evoked Responses in Mouse Visual Cortex.

Short-term plasticity gates information transfer across neuronal synapses and is thought to be involved in fundamental brain processes, such as cortical gain control and sensory adaptation. Neurons employ synaptic vesicle priming proteins of the CAPS and Munc13 families to shape short-term plasticity in vitro, but the relevance of this phenomenon for information processing in the intact brain is unknown. By combining sensory stimulation with in vivo patch-clamp recordings in anesthetized mice, we show that genetic deletion of CAPS-1 in thalamic neurons results in more rapid adaptation of sensory-evoked subthreshold responses in layer 4 neurons of the primary visual cortex.

Facial Recognition Task for the Classification of Mild Cognitive Impairment with Ensemble Sparse Classifier.

Conventional methods for detecting mild cognitive impairment (MCI) require cognitive exams and follow-up neuroimaging, which can be time-consuming and expensive. A great need exists for objective and cost-effective biomarkers for the early detection of MCI. This study uses a sequential imaging oddball paradigm to determine if familiar, unfamiliar, or inverted faces are effective visual stimuli for the early detection of MCI.

Screenings, Savings, and Service: Nurses Meeting Rural Older Adults in Their Communities.

Falls, depression, and dementia are major health concerns for older adults and communities across the country, which also result in increased health care expenditures. The improvement of early intervention is a tremendous need, especially for older adults who are isolated in rural areas. Nurses were deployed across 41 counties in eastern North Carolina to increase access to screening and improve the possibility of early intervention for rural community-dwelling older adults.

The rate of overdose related to the use of licit and illicit opioids has drastically increased over the last decade in the United States. The epicenter has been West Virginia with the highest rates of overdoses accounting for 41.5 deaths per 100 000 people among the 33 091 deaths in 2015.

Biallelic loss-of-function LACC1/FAMIN Mutations Presenting as Rheumatoid Factor-Negative Polyarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a complex rheumatic disease with both autoimmune and autoinflammatory components. Recently, familial cases of systemic-onset JIA have been attributed to mutations in LACC1/FAMIN. We describe three affected siblings from a Moroccan consanguineous family with an early-onset chronic, symmetric and erosive arthritis previously diagnosed as rheumatoid factor (RF)-negative polyarticular JIA.

Prevalence of medication and off-label medication use in acquired brain injury at a neurorehabilitation hospital.

Purpose: Patients who suffer acquired brain injury (ABI) require a great variety of drugs. Furthermore, the lack of evidence on the medication effects in this type of patient increases off-label prescription. The aim of this study was to describe the pattern of medication use and the practice of prescribing off-label drugs in these patients.
