Background: It has been widely demonstrated that siblings of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have an increased risk of abnormal developmental trajectories. In response to this, early recognition protocols have been developed worldwide, aiming to promote early interventions that can positively impact the neurodevelopment of this population. This paper presents the protocol of a controlled trial: ERI-SIBS (Early Recognition and Intervention in SIBlingS at High Risk for Neurodevelopment Disorders) is an innovative and ecological early recognition and intervention program designed specifically for siblings of children with ASD.

Purpose: Unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP) represents about 30-40% of overall cerebral palsy diagnoses. Upper limb impairment has a significant negative impact on activities of daily living (ADL), and recent studies have shown that the use of virtual reality (VR) can increase motivation and promote an improvement in ADL. This preliminary study was aimed at exploring the acceptability and usability of a VR rehabilitation treatment, using the VITAMIN Platform, for children with UCP.

Background: Air pollution and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are both linked with cardiovascular co-morbidities and share similar pathophysiological mechanisms. A causal association between the two has been postulated. However, the results of the studies on this topic are conflicting mainly because of the lack of adjustment for important confounders such as seasonality and temperature.

Background: The application of Virtual Reality (VR) in the field of rehabilitation has been widely studied, because it has already proven to be an effective intervention for a variety of physical and cognitive conditions. Nevertheless, its application in pediatric rehabilitation is more recent. This pilot study aims to examine whether a VR-rehabilitation program may have positive effects on the Executive Functions (EFs) of children with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD).

The combination of noradrenergic (reboxetine) plus antimuscarinic (oxybutynin) drugs (reb-oxy) reduced obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity but no data are available on its effects on cardiac autonomic modulation. We sought to evaluate the impact of 1-week reb-oxy treatment on cardiovascular autonomic control in OSA patients. OSA patients were randomized to a double-blind, crossover trial comparing 4 mg reboxetine plus 5 mg oxybutynin to a placebo for OSA treatment.

The interest in photoplethysmography (PPG) for sleep monitoring is increasing because PPG may allow assessing heart rate variability (HRV), which is particularly important in breathing disorders. Thus, we aimed to evaluate how PPG wearable systems measure HRV during sleep at high altitudes, where hypobaric hypoxia induces respiratory disturbances. We considered PPG and electrocardiographic recordings in 21 volunteers sleeping at 4554 m a.

Background: The recent discovery that a combination of noradrenergic and antimuscarinic drugs improved upper airway muscle function during sleep and reduced OSA severity has revitalized interest in pharmacologic therapies for OSA.

Research Question: Would 1 week of reboxetine plus oxybutynin (Reb-Oxy) be effective on OSA severity?

Study Design And Methods: A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover trial was performed comparing 4 mg reboxetine plus 5 mg oxybutynin (Reb-Oxy) vs placebo in patients with OSA. After a baseline in-laboratory polysomnogram (PSG), patients underwent PSGs after 7 nights of Reb-Oxy and 7 nights of placebo to compare apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), which was the primary outcome.

Background And Objective: The presence of executive deficits in patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is well established, even if standardized measures are difficult to obtain due to progressive physical disability of the patients. We present clinical data concerning a newly developed measure of cognitive flexibility, administered by means of Eye-Tracking (ET) technology in order to bypass verbal-motor limitations.

Methods: 21 ALS patients and 21 age-and education-matched healthy subjects participated in an ET-based cognitive assessment, including a newly developed test of cognitive flexibility (Arrows and Colors Cognitive Test-ACCT) and other oculomotor-driven measures of cognitive functions.

Alongside the best-known applications of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology for restoring communication abilities and controlling external devices, we present the state of the art of BCI use for cognitive assessment and training purposes. We first describe some preliminary attempts to develop verbal-motor free BCI-based tests for evaluating specific or multiple cognitive domains in patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, disorders of consciousness, and other neurological diseases. Then we present the more heterogeneous and advanced field of BCI-based cognitive training, which has its roots in the context of neurofeedback therapy and addresses patients with neurological developmental disorders (autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder), stroke patients, and elderly subjects.

We assessed language, attention, executive, and social cognition abilities in a sample of patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) by means of a recently developed cognitive battery based on oculomotor control with eye-tracking (ET) technology. Twenty-one ALS patients and 21 age- and education-matched healthy subjects underwent the ET-based cognitive assessment, together with the standard cognitive screening tools [Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB); Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA); and Digit Sequencing Task]. Psychological measures of anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Y) and depression (Beck Depression Inventory) were also collected, and an ET usability questionnaire was administered.

Traditional cognitive assessment in neurological conditions involving physical disability is often prevented by the presence of verbal-motor impairment; to date, an extensive motor-verbal-free neuropsychological battery is not available for such purposes. We adapted a set of neuropsychological tests, assessing language, attentional abilities, executive functions and social cognition, for eye-tracking (ET) control, and explored its feasibility in a sample of healthy participants. Thirty healthy subjects performed a neuropsychological assessment, using an ET-based neuropsychological battery, together with standard "paper and pencil" cognitive measures for frontal (Frontal Assessment Battery-FAB) and working memory abilities (Digit Sequencing Task) and for global cognitive efficiency (Montreal Cognitive Assessment-MoCA).

Most applications of accelerometry-based actigraphy require a single sensor, properly located onto the body, to estimate, for example, the level of activity or the energy expenditure. Some approaches adopt a multi-sensor setup to improve those analyses or to classify different types of activity. The specific case of two symmetrically placed actigraphs allowing, by some kind of differential analysis, for the assessment of asymmetric motor behaviors, has been considered in relatively few studies.

Seismocardiogram (SCG) can be detected during sleep by a textile-based wearable system. This pilot study preliminarily explores the feasibility of a beat-to-beat estimation of cardiac mechanical features (RR interval, RRI, Pre-Ejection Period, PEP, Isovolumic Contraction Time, ICT, Left Ventricular Ejection Time, LVET, Isovolumic Relaxation Time, IRT) from the joint ECG and SCG assessment during sleep. The analysis of two 30-min sleep data segments from one healthy subject, indicated that 1) respiration largely influence the dynamics of most of the parameters; 2) variability of cardiac intervals is only marginally influenced by the RRI variability; 3) appreciable spectral power at frequencies ≤ 0.

Objective: Nocturnal periodic breathing occurs more frequently in men than in women with various clinical and pathophysiologic conditions. The mechanisms accounting for this sex-related difference are not completely understood. Acetazolamide effectively counteracts nocturnal periodic breathing, but it has been investigated almost exclusively in men.

Seismocardiogram (SCG) is the measure of the minute vibrations produced by the beating heart. We previously demonstrated that SCG, ECG and respiration could be recorded over the 24 h during spontaneous behavior by a smart garment, the MagIC-SCG system. In the present case study we explored the feasibility of a beat-to-beat estimation of two indices of heart contractility, the Left Ventricular Ejection Time (LVET) and the electromechanical systole (QS2) from SCG and ECG recordings obtained by the MagIC-SCG device in one subject.

Background: In 2008-2009, a survey in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy collected information on the farm use of plant protection products (PPPs) and evaluated whether the provisions of the Directive for the Sustainable Use of Pesticides are applicable. It was concluded that the provisions can be implemented, even if some gaps need to be filled and also the behaviour of farmers needs to be improved. Moreover, it was observed that all stages in the use of PPPs on farms could generate risks for the operator and/or the environment.

Seismocardiogram (SCG) is the measure of the micro-vibrations produced by the heart contraction and blood ejection into the vascular tree. Over time, a large body of evidence has been collected on the ability of SCG to reflect cardiac mechanical events such as opening and closure of mitral and aortic valves, atrial filling and point of maximal aortic blood ejection. We recently developed a smart garment, named MagIC-SCG, that allows the monitoring of SCG, electrocardiogram (ECG) and respiration out of the laboratory setting in ambulant subjects.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the accumulation of lung fluid and potential damage to the alveolar-capillary membrane during acute exposure to high altitudes, specifically at 4559 meters compared to 122 meters in Milan.
  • Results showed decreased lung carbon monoxide diffusion (DLCO) at high altitude due to reduced membrane diffusion (DM) despite an increase in capillary volume (VC), indicating changes in lung function.
  • Despite receiving acetazolamide, participants did not prevent the decrease in DLCO, while ultrasound lung comets—markers of lung fluid—increased significantly, suggesting fluid accumulation and potential membrane damage without clear changes in specific plasma markers.

Sternal seismocardiogram (SCG) is the assessment of microvibrations produced by the beating heart as detected by an accelerometer positioned on the sternum. This signal reflects mechanical events of the heart contraction, including the opening and closure of mitral and aortic valves and maximal blood flow acceleration. Traditionally, SCG has been detected in a laboratory setting with the subject lying at rest in supine position.
