Article Synopsis
  • This study compares two surgical methods, Hartmann's procedure (HP) and resection with primary anastomosis (RPA), for treating acute left-sided colonic emergencies among 1215 patients from 204 centers globally.
  • Results showed that while HP was the more common treatment (57.3%), RPA was favored for younger patients with fewer health issues and those needing surgery sooner.
  • The study concluded that although HP is still widely used, RPA might be the better option, emphasizing the importance of patient characteristics and surgeon experience in determining treatment choice.

  • The study reviews 32 cases of pressure cooker burns, highlighting the dangers and risks associated with improper handling and misuse of these cooking devices.
  • Data collected from patients at a burn center in Türkiye revealed that most injuries stemmed from user errors, with a significant portion also suffering from related injuries like eye and ear injuries.
  • The research emphasizes the necessity for better instructional resources and educational programs to improve awareness and safety practices in the use of pressure cookers to reduce the incidence of burns.

Aim: Fundectomy, shown as an alternative to restrictive techniques, causes absorption restriction and metabolic changes. This study aimed to examine the histopathological changes caused by the fundectomy as a technique applied to rats by hormones that affect stomach and obesity metabolism and its effect on weight loss.

Material And Methods: 2randomly selected Winstar-Hannover rat groups were evaluated by measuring their pre-and postoperative weights and biochemically measuring Gastrin, Ghrelin, and Leptin levels on day 30.

Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a frequent adverse effect following laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Palonosetron with a standard dosing (75 μg) schedule has been questioned due to its low efficiency in obese patients. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of the body weight-based dosing of palonosetron in managing PONV following laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

  • The ChoCO-W study aimed to examine the effects of COVID-19 on the clinical presentation and outcomes of acute cholecystitis, particularly focusing on the rise of gangrenous cases during the pandemic.
  • Over 2,800 patients from 42 countries were enrolled, with a notable 6.9% testing positive for COVID-19, revealing a significantly higher prevalence of preexisting conditions and more severe outcomes in this group compared to those without the virus.
  • Patients with COVID-19 experienced higher postoperative complications (32.2% vs. 11.7%), longer hospital stays (13.21 days vs. 6.51 days), increased mortality rates (13.4% vs. 1.7

Waterborne pathogens represent one of the most widespread environmental concerns. Conventional disinfection methods, including chlorination and UV, pose several operational and environmental problems; namely, formation of potentially hazardous disinfection by-products (DBPs) and high energy consumption. Therefore, there is high demand for effective, low-cost disinfection treatments.

Objective: Although readmission after surgical procedures has been recognized as a new problem, its association with cholecystectomy has not been solved. We aimed to investigate the rate of unplanned readmission after cholecystectomy and to evaluate the reasons and outcomes in these patients.

Methods: All consecutive patients who underwent open and laparoscopic cholecystectomy were retrospectively evaluated.

Objectives: The purpose of the study was to examine the possible effects of curcumin on the formation of neomucosa in parietal peritoneum which was applied as a patch for terminal ileal defect in rats.

Methods: Sixteen male Wistar Hannover rats were split into two groups. The control group was injected with saline and curcumin (2 mL/kg/day, by gavage) was given to the experimental group.

Background: Older patients undergoing emergency laparotomy have high morbidity and mortality rates. Preoperative risk assessment with good predictors is an appropriate measure in this population. Frailty status is significantly associated with postoperative outcomes in older adults.

Purpose: The minimum harvested 12 lymph nodes (LNs) is regarded as the limit for accurate staging of nodal status in colorectal cancer patients. Besides the association of the lengths of resected intestinal segments and vascular pedicles, the mesocolic mesenteric area's impact on LN count has not been studied. We aimed to evaluate the associations between metric variables, including the mesocolic mesentery area on the nodal harvest.

Introduction: Although fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) with cytologic interpretation using the Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology has been widely used for thyroid nodules, its efficiency in Bethesda categories of III, IV, and V has been questioned due to variable risk of malignancy. We aimed to evaluate the impact of radiological parameters in Bethesda category III, IV, and V for thyroid malignancy.

Methods: We performed a retrospective review of patients with Bethesda category III, IV, and V, and subsequent thyroidectomy.

Background: Due to variable rates of colon carcinoma or advanced adenoma mimicking an acute diverticulitis episode, the necessity of colonoscopy to detect colon cancer or advanced adenoma remains to be explored. This study investigated the incidence and predictive factors of colon cancer or advanced adenoma following acute diverticulitis.

Methods: We evaluated retrospectively all consecutive patients with an episode of computed tomography-proven acute diverticulitis between June 2016 and August 2019.

Lycopersicon esculentum L., also known as tomato, is an important industrial plant due to its products which worth billions of dollars annually, besides its nutritional value and health benefits. In this study, we investigated the two-dimensional protein expression profiles in drought tolerant mutant plants derived from industrial 5MX12956 tomato variety by Cs-137 gamma radiation source induced mutations.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the management of acute appendicitis, comparing cases from 2019 (pre-pandemic) and 2020 (during the pandemic) with a total of 150 patients involved in the analysis.
  • - Key findings show no significant differences in patient demographics or laboratory results between the two groups, but a notable increase in complications, such as perforations, during the pandemic period (p=0.029).
  • - The authors conclude that delayed hospital admissions during the pandemic complicated appendicitis cases, stressing the need for consistent emergency surgical protocols for both suspected and confirmed infections.

The disease caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus is known predominantly for its respiratory outcomes; a subset of critically ill patients demonstrates clinically remarkable hypercoagulability in which thrombotic events range from acute pulmonary embolism in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia to extremity ischemia. Our observational study aimed to describe the incidence and characteristics, as well as clinical outcomes, of patients presenting and treated for mesenteric ischemia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Between March 13 and May 13, 2020, 60 patients operated for emergency reasons were analyzed, and it was noticed that 5 of the 6 COVID-positive patients were operated due to mesenteric ischemia.

Background: Acute appendicitis (AA) is the most common extra-obstetric condition requiring surgery during pregnancy. AA diagnosis is made by laboratory tests along with anamnesis and physical examination findings. Due to the physiological and anatomical changes during the pregnancy, AA diagnosis is more challenging in pregnant women compared to non-pregnant patients.

Purpose: To determine the potential protective and therapeutic effects and action mechanism of ruscogenin on cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis (AP) model in rats.

Methods: Overall, 32 rats were attenuated to the sham (2-mL/kg/day isotonic solution for 4 weeks), control (20-µg/kg cerulein-induced AP for 12 hours), prophylaxis groups (cerulein-induced AP following 3-mL/kg/day ruscogenin for 4 weeks) and treatment (3-mL/kg/day ruscogenin following cerulein-induced AP for 12 hours). Blood samples were collected for biochemical analysis of nitric oxide synthase 1 (NOS1/neuronal NOS), malondialdehyde (MDA) and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1).
