Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is being increasingly used in the treatment of breast carcinoma. We performed a single-center retrospective analysis of the results of neoadjuvant therapy in 376 breast carcinoma patients treated with three different regimens combining doxorubicin and paclitaxel (AT), dose-dense doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide with sequential weekly paclitaxel (DD AC-P), or the combination of trastuzumab with chemotherapy (DD AC-PT). The expression of estrogen receptors (ER), progesterone receptors (PR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER)-2 was determined immunohistochemically.

Tumor-infiltrating leukocytes and other immunohistochemical parameters were evaluated in pretherapeutic biopsies and resection specimens in 73 patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy with doxorubicin and paclitaxel. Ten patients with pathological complete response had significantly higher p53 expression, CD3(+) lymphocyte and CD83(+) cell counts, and lower progesterone receptor expression. In the remaining 63 patients, a significant decrease in the percentage of Ki-67, vascular endothelial growth factor expression, CD68(+) monocytes, and increased CD31(+), CD34(+), and SMA(+) stromal vessels, maximal CD3(+) and CD56(+) lymphocyte, maximal and mean CD83(+) cell, maximal CD1a(+), and maximal and mean S100(+) cell counts were observed after neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

The prognosis of patients with BRCA1-related breast carcinomas is inferior to the patients without BRCA1 mutation, but most of these tumors have a so-called triple negative phenotype characterized by increased chemosensitivity. Information regarding the chemosensitivity of BRCA1-related breast carcinomas is limited. We present a case of a mother and daughter with hereditary breast carcinoma treated with primary chemotherapy using the dose-dense combination of doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide and sequential weekly paclitaxel administration.

Background/aims: Liver is the most common site of metastatic disease in colorectal cancer. Superior response rate was demonstrated in trials comparing hepatic arterial administration of cytotoxic agents with systemic chemotherapy.

Methodology: Records of 109 consecutive patients with colorectal carcinoma metastatic to the liver treated by regional chemotherapy, who underwent implantation of a port system into hepatic artery or portal vein tributaries between 1991 and 1999, were reviewed and survival was evaluated using the log-rank test and multivariate analysis (Cox's proportional hazard regression).

The authors present information of a group of 63 patients (60 women and 3 men) treated in 1976-1998 where supernumerous aberrant or accessory mammary gland tissue was found. The diagnosis in the majority of the patients was based on histological examination. The tissue of an aberrant mammary gland is subject to the same physiological influences as the mamma proper and can be affected by the same pathological processes--benign and malignant.
