The [Yb(5,7ClQ)(2)(H5,7ClQ)(2)Cl] (1) complex, that exhibits dual-luminescence in the visible (ligand-centered) and in the NIR (Yb-centered), has been incorporated into a silica sol-gel glass obtaining 1-doped glassy material which is optically transparent and homogeneous and with good mechanical properties. The doped sol-gel glass can be considered a "solid state solution" and photophysical studies demonstrate that the emissive properties of the dopant complex are preserved in the silica matrix. Observed NIR decay times fall in the μs range and are likely limited by "second-sphere" matrix interactions.

The donor-acceptor type mixed-ligand complexes [M(Bz(2)pipdt)(dsit)]; dsit = 2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-diselenolato (donor); Bz(2)pipdt = 1,4-dibenzyl-piperazine-2,3-dithione (acceptor); M(II) = Ni (1), Pd (2), and Pt (3) were prepared and characterized to investigate the variation of the properties by substituting selenium for sulfur in the donor ligand dmit = 2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato of the corresponding known complexes. Both these classes of complexes exhibit large negative second-order polarizabilities, amongst the highest values determined so far for metal-complexes, and are potential candidates for redox switchability of the molecular first hyperpolarizability due to the bleaching/restoring of the solvatochromic peak for mono-reduction/oxidation. DFT and TD-DFT calculations on 1-3 allow one to correlate geometries and electronic structures and are in agreement with the observed minor changes following the substitution of selenium for sulfur atoms in the dichalcogenolato ligand.

The cumulative radiation exposure to the patient from multiple radiological procedures can place some individuals at significantly increased risk for stochastic effects and tissue reactions. Approaches, such as those in the International Atomic Energy Agency's Smart Card program, have been developed to track cumulative radiation exposures to individuals. These strategies often rely on the availability of structured dose reports, typically found in the DICOM header.

The reaction of the croconate dianion (C(5)O(5))(2-) with a Fe(III) salt has led, unexpectedly, to the formation of the first example of a discrete Fe(II)-croconate complex without additional coligands, K(4)[Fe(C(5)O(5))(2)(H(2)O)(2)](HC(5)O(5))(2)·4H(2)O (1). 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic P2(1)/c space group and presents discrete octahedral Fe(II) complexes coordinated by two chelating C(5)O(5)(2-) anions in the equatorial plane and two trans axial water molecules. The structure can be viewed as formed by alternating layers of trans-diaquabis(croconato)ferrate(II) complexes and layers containing the monoprotonated croconate anions, HC(5)O(5)(-), and noncoordinated water molecules.

OBJECTIVES: With increasing experience, endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) has been extended to patients with less suitable aorto-iliac anatomy in an attempt to reduce peri-operative mortality. However, more complex EVAR procedures may take longer and can result in higher rates of complications, additional interventional procedures and more frequent radiological imaging, which may offset some of the benefit. This study determined the radiation burden for standard EVAR, as determined by the EVAR-1 trial criteria, and more complex EVAR.

The mixed-ligand dithiolene complex [Pt(Bz(2)pipdt)(dcbdt)] (1) bearing the two ligands Bz(2)pipdt = 1,4-dibenzyl-piperazine-3,2-dithione and dcbdt = dicyanobenzodithiolato, has been synthesized, characterized and studied to evaluate its second-order optical nonlinearity. The dithione/dithiolato character of the two ligands gives rise to an asymmetric distribution of the charge in the molecule. This is reflected by structural data showing that in the C(2)S(2)PtS(2)C(2) dithiolene core the four sulfur atoms define a square-planar coordination environment of the metal where the Pt-S bond distances involving the two ligands are similar, while the C-S bond distances in the C(2)S(2) units exhibit a significant difference in Bz(2)pipdt (dithione) and dcbdt (dithiolato).

Purpose: A previous randomized clinical trial by the Italian Sarcoma Group (ISG) had shown a survival benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy (CT) in high-risk extremity soft tissue sarcoma (STS). However, the dose-intensity of the last two cycles was suboptimal. We then undertook a multicentric international phase III study to compare three and five cycles of the same CT.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines mixed-ligand dithiolene complexes of nickel triad metals (Ni, Pd, Pt) focusing on their synthesis, characterization, and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties.
  • Molecular characterization reveals a square-planar geometry with significant differences in bond lengths, suggesting distinct roles for the ligands involved.
  • The cyclic voltammetry and EFISH technique showcase the complexes' NLO behavior, with the platinum complex exhibiting the largest negative second-order polarizability, making it a strong candidate for NLO applications.

We retrospectively studied the files of 669 patients with musculoskeletal tumors treated with limb salvage and reconstruction using fixed-hinge knee megaprostheses. We used the KMFTR® prosthesis from 1983 to 1989 in 126 patients, and the HMRS® prosthesis thereafter in 543 patients because of the anatomical femoral stem with one lateral flange for improved stress-shielding, the new hinge design and new generation polyethylene placed centrally in the metallic hinge, and the improved function compared to the former prosthesis. Distal femoral reconstructions were done in 474, proximal tibia in 163, extrarticular knee joint in nine, and total femoral in 23 patients.

The electrochemical oxidation of an acetone solution containing [Mn(III) (5-MeOsaltmen)(H(2)O)](2)(PF(6))(2) (5-MeOsaltmen(2-) = N,N'-(1,1,2,2-tetramethylethylene)bis(5-methoxysalicylideneiminate)) and (NBu(4))[Ni(dmit)(2)] (dmit(2-) = 2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolate) afforded a hybrid material, [Mn(5-MeOsaltmen)(acetone)](2)[Ni(dmit)(2)](6) (1), in which [Mn(2)](2+) single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with an S(T) = 4 ground state and [Ni(dmit)(2)](n-) molecules in a charge-ordered state (n = 0 or 1) are assembled in a layer-by-layer structure. Compound 1 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with an inversion center at the midpoint of the Mn···Mn dimer. The [Mn(2)](2+) unit has a typical nonplanar Mn(III) dimeric core and is structurally consistent with previously reported [Mn(2)] SMMs.

This article reviews recent molecular, biologic, therapeutic, and clinical findings in dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma. Dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma is one of the most malignant primary bone tumors characterized by two distinct histopathologic components: a well-differentiated chondral lesion sharply juxtaposed with a high-grade noncartilaginous component. Wide or radical surgical resection is mandatory.

Limited data are available to compare the outcome of wide en bloc resection and curettage for pelvic metastases. Previous studies have reported that curettage is associated with high mortality and decreased survival compared to wide resection and have justified consideration of a radical surgical approach to achieve pain palliation and tumor control. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the role of curettage/marginal resection compared to wide en bloc resection for patients with pelvic metastases.

Purpose: After standard multimodal therapy, the prognosis of relapsed and unresectable high-grade osteosarcoma is dismal and unchanged over the last decades. Recently, mitogen-activated protein kinases were shown to be activated in osteosarcoma specimens, suggesting, therefore, they are suitable targets for the multikinase inhibitor sorafenib. Thus, we explored sorafenib activity in patients with relapsed and unresectable osteosarcoma.

This paper examines the sources of practice variations and definitions of unwarranted variation, as derived from the literature. The literature suggests variables/factors related to patient health needs, doctor 'practice style' and environmental constraints/opportunities as sources of practice variations. However, this list is likely to be incomplete because of significant unexplained variation in each study.

Objectives: We sought to determine whether radial artery access is associated with increased radiation exposure during cardiac catheterization and whether this relationship differs between operators, after adjustment for clinical and patient characteristics associated with greater radiation exposure.

Background: Although previous studies have demonstrated a relationship between radial access and increased radiation exposure to the patient during fluoroscopy-guided cardiac procedures, such studies did not account for differences in operator technique or clustering of patients, procedure complexity, or patient size. Those studies included data from few operators.

Background: Massive endoprostheses provide orthopaedic oncologists with many reconstructive options after tumor resection, although failure rates are high. Because the number of these procedures is limited, failure of these devices has not been studied or classified adequately. This investigation is a multicenter review of the use of segmental endoprostheses with a focus on the modes, frequency, and timing of failure.
