Over the last decade, unusually high losses of colonies have been reported by beekeepers across the USA. Multiple factors such as Varroa destructor, bee viruses, Nosema ceranae, weather, beekeeping practices, nutrition, and pesticides have been shown to contribute to colony losses. Here we describe a large-scale controlled trial, in which different bee pathogens, bee population, and weather conditions across winter were monitored at three locations across the USA.

Iron-uptake and storage are tightly regulated to guarantee sufficient iron for essential cellular processes and to prevent the production of damaging free radicals. A non-classical class I MHC molecule, the hemochromatosis factor (HFE), has been shown to regulate iron metabolism, potentially via its interaction with the transferrin receptor. Whereas, the effect of human HFE (hHFE) on transferrin/transferrin receptor association, as well as on transferrin receptor recycling and the level of cellular iron pools in various cell lines was analyzed, very little is known about the mouse HFE (mHFE) protein.

IFN consensus sequence-binding protein (ICSBP) is a member of the IFN-regulatory factors (IRF) and is thus also called IRF-8. Its expression is restricted to hematopoietic cells and IRF-8\ICSBP(-/-) mice are defective in myeloid cell differentiation. This factor exerts its transcriptional activity through interaction with other transcription factors, which leads to either repression or activation.

Type I IFNs cause the induction of a subset of genes termed IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs), which harbor a specific DNA element, IFN-stimulated response element (ISRE). This ISRE confers the responsiveness to the IFN signal through the binding of a family of transcription factors designated IFN regulatory factors (IRFs).
