Background: Cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM), characterized by the coexistence of diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, poses a major health challenge in India, particularly in rural areas with limited healthcare resources. Lifestyle interventions can manage cardiometabolic risk factors, yet adherence remains suboptimal. Mobile health (mHealth) interventions offer a scalable approach for managing CMM by promoting behaviour change and medication adherence.

Article Synopsis
  • Fibrosis contributes to serious damage in organs, but treatments targeting specific activators have often failed, leading researchers to focus on the leukemia inhibitory factor receptor (LIFR) as a key player in fibrotic diseases like idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).
  • In IPF, myofibroblasts highly express LIF, and fibroblasts in key fibrotic areas coexpress LIF and LIFR, demonstrating LIFR's role in amplifying signals from other fibrotic drivers like TGFβ1, IL-4, and IL-13.
  • Blocking LIFR reduces the activation of profibrotic genes and highlights LIFR's function as a master amplifier of harmful signals

Neurological injury drives most deaths and morbidity among patients hospitalized for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Despite its clinical importance, there are no effective pharmacological therapies targeting post-cardiac arrest (CA) neurological injury. Here, we analyzed circulating immune cells from a large cohort of patients with OHCA, finding that lymphopenia independently associated with poor neurological outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to assess the impact of a tobacco smoke-free home intervention on reducing secondhand smoke exposure and its associated health risks, particularly heart disease and lung cancer, in non-smokers.
  • Conducted in Kochi, India, the trial will involve 30 clusters with 300 participants each, focusing on educating smokers and their communities about the dangers of secondhand smoke through home visits and community meetings over a six-month period.
  • The research ethics have been approved, and results will be published in open-access journals to share findings with stakeholders and the broader community.

Background: Studies of schizophrenia and homelessness are minimal from the Indian subcontinent. Women with schizophrenia and homelessness in India remain a highly vulnerable group and there is no data to date regarding their clinical characteristics. Cognitive impairment in schizophrenia remains a major factor determining outcomes in schizophrenia.

Aims: Islet antibody-negative type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has not been well characterised. We determined the frequency of antibody-negative T1DM and compared it with antibody-positive T1DM in a cohort of north Indian children.

Methods: In a multi-centre, prospective, observational study, 176 Indian children (age 1-18 years) were assessed within 2 weeks of diagnosis of T1DM.

Background: Wilson's disease (WD) results from pathogenic ATP7B gene variations, causing copper accumulation mainly in the liver, brain, and kidneys.

Objectives: In India, despite studies on ATP7B variants, WD often goes undiagnosed, with the prevalence, carrier rate, and mutation spectrum remaining unknown.

Methods: A multicenter study examined genetic variations in WD among individuals of Indian origin via whole exome sequencing.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to understand the path for establishing digital health technologies-health technology assessment (DHT-HTA) in India.

Methods: A rapid review of HTA and DHT frameworks on PubMed (MEDLINE) and Google Scholar was conducted to identify DHT-HTA guidelines, and HTA processes in India. MS-Excel template was created with key domains for assessing DHT in resource-constrained settings based on studies and reports identified.

Introduction: Air pollution presents a major public health threat to India, affecting more than three quarters of the country's population. In the current project, GEOHealth Health Effects of Selected Environmental Exposomes Across the Life CourSe-India, we aim to study the effect of environmental exposomes-fine particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO), ozone (O) and extremes of temperature-on multiple health outcomes using a modified life course approach. The associated training grant aims to build capacity in India to address the unique environmental health problems.

Hypercalcemia is a relatively common clinical problem, and evaluation for its etiology may often prove to be challenging. However, a thorough etiological workup can guide effective therapy and can often prove to be lifesaving. We describe a 61-year-old man who presented with fever, anorexia, and weight loss for 3 months, and altered sensorium for around 1 week.

Correction for 'Development and characterization of a novel poly(-isopropylacrylamide)-based thermoresponsive photoink and its applications in DLP bioprinting' by Kalindu D. C. Perera , , 2024, https://doi.

The field of 3-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has significantly expanded capabilities in producing precision-engineered hydrogel constructs, and recent years have seen the development of various stimuli-responsive bio- and photoinks. There is, however, a distinct lack of digital light processing (DLP)-compatible photoinks with thermoresponsivity. To remedy this, this work focuses on formulating and optimizing a versatile ink for DLP printing of thermoresponsive hydrogels, with numerous potential applications in tissue engineering, drug delivery, and adjacent biomedical fields.

Introduction: Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is caused by the deficiency of branched-chain keto acid dehydrogenase (BCKAD) and, it is well described that BCKAD contributed by an allograft following liver transplantation (LT) phenotypically normalizes this inborn error of metabolism (IEM). There is, however, a paucity of data especially with regards to the neurodevelopmental aspects and catch-up growth profiles after LT in a resource-challenged setting. We present our series of children under 6 years of age who underwent LT for MSUD particularly focusing on their amino acid homeostasis, neurodevelopmental and somatic growth profiles.

Objective: We studied the temporal course of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) dysfunction in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Methods: Three hundred and two patients (median age 54 years (interquartile range (IQR) 42-64), 76% males) were recruited. The HPA axis was evaluated by morning cortisol and adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) at admission (n = 232).

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality worldwide, and at present, India has the highest burden of acute coronary syndrome and ST-elevation myocardial infarction (MI). A key reason for poor outcomes is non-adherence to medication.

Methods: The intervention is a 2 × 2 factorial design trial applying two interventions individually and in combination with 1:1 allocation ratio: (i) ASHA-led medication adherence initiative comprising of home visits and (ii) m-health intervention using reminders and self-reporting of medication use.

Chronic liver inflammation, a pervasive global health issue, results in millions of annual deaths due to its progression from fibrosis to the more severe forms of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This insidious condition stems from diverse factors such as obesity, genetic conditions, alcohol abuse, viral infections, autoimmune diseases, and toxic accumulation, manifesting as chronic liver diseases (CLDs) such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), alcoholic liver disease (ALD), viral hepatitis, drug-induced liver injury, and autoimmune hepatitis. Late detection of CLDs necessitates effective treatments to inhibit and potentially reverse disease progression.
