Structural differences among non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) result in varying oxidation rates, limiting mass transfer between NAPLs and oxidants and seriously impairing the effectiveness of remediation via traditional in-situ chemical oxidation. To tackle this challenge, a novel approach is proposed for remediating multi-NAPL-polluted groundwater that leverages phase transfer catalysis (PTC) to enhance heterogeneous mass transfer by transferring oxidants from groundwater to NAPLs. Meanwhile, "oxidation-in-situ activation" is achieved through bifunctional oxidation using permanganate and peroxymonosulfate (PP).

Article Synopsis
  • - The multifunctional composite FeO/GO/NH-MIL-53(Fe) effectively removes Aflatoxin B (AFB) through its strong adsorption properties due to a large surface area and numerous adsorption sites.
  • - Its degradation capabilities involve the generation of reactive radicals (like hydroxyl radicals) through a metal-oxygen coordination complex that enhances the breakdown of AFB.
  • - The combined effects of adsorption and advanced oxidation from the nanozyme lead to a highly efficient removal process for AFB, presenting a new approach to mitigate its risks.

Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a disease characterized by an abnormal metabolism of purine. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have attracted much attention for their safe and effective treatment of HUA by inhibiting xanthine oxidase (XOD) and regulating gut microbiota. However, the effectiveness of probiotics can be compromised by the harsh environment of the gastrointestinal tract.

Root exudates are known signaling agents that influence legume root nodulation, but the molecular mechanisms for nonflavonoid molecules remain largely unexplored. The number of soybean root nodules during the initial growth phase shows substantial discrepancies at distinct developmental junctures. Using a combination of metabolomics analyses on root exudates and nodulation experiments, we identify a pivotal role for certain root exudates during the rapid growth phase in promoting nodulation.

The depletion of nutrient sources in fertilizers demands a paradigm shift in the treatment of nutrient-rich wastewater, such as urine, to enable efficient resource recovery and high-value conversion. This study presented an integrated bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) and hollow fiber membrane (HFM) system for near-complete resource recovery and zero-discharge from urine treatment. Computational simulations and experimental validations demonstrated that a higher voltage (20 V) significantly enhanced energy utilization, while an optimal flow rate of 0.

An imbalance in sensitivity to different types of reward stimuli may be an important cause of addiction that is mainly manifested in high sensitivity to addictive substance rewards and blunting of natural rewards. However, contradictions remain in the research results on the sensitivity of individuals with Internet gaming disorder (IGD) to different reward stimuli. Based on participants' neural responses to win and loss feedback (in door task), the event-related potential (ERP) technique was used to investigate the effects of different types of reward stimuli on the assessment of reward-processing outcomes in individuals with IGD.

This study evaluated the roles of two common sources of Fe(III)-minerals-volcanic rock (VR) and synthetic banded iron formations from waste iron tailings (BIF-W)-in vertical flow-constructed wetlands (VFCWs). The evaluation was conducted in the absence of critical environmental factors, including Fe(II), Fe(III), and soil organic matter (SOM), using metagenomic analysis and integrated correlation networks to predict nitrogen removal pathways. Our findings revealed that Fe(III)-minerals enhanced metabolic activities and cellular processes related to carbohydrate decomposition, thereby increasing the average COD removal rates by 10.

Objective: This study aims to explore the effects of eye exercises on the accommodative ability of Chinese school-aged children.

Methods: This study used a convenience cluster sampling and selected 149 students from grades 2-5 in a Wenzhou primary school to participate in the intervention in June 2022. This study involved a one-month intervention teaching eye exercises using a composite feedback model.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at how people with Internet gaming disorder (IGD) learn from rewards and control their actions compared to healthy people who don’t play games.
  • The results showed that people with IGD had a harder time learning from rewards and were slower to respond when they needed to stop.
  • It was also found that they didn’t respond as well to rewards after learning, while healthy people had no problem regardless of the situation.

Since synovial hypoxic microenvironment significantly promotes the pathological progress of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) has been emerged as a promising target for the development of novel therapeutic agents for RA treatment. In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of diaryl substituted isoquinolin-1(2H)-one derivatives as HIF-1 signaling inhibitors using scaffold-hopping strategy. By modifying the substituents on N-atom and 6-position of isoquinolin-1-one, we discovered compound 17q with the most potent activities against HIF-1 (IC = 0.

Article Synopsis
  • PFAS, a group of environmental contaminants known for their immunosuppressive effects, may have a connection to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but this link has been under-researched.
  • Using data from nearly 10,500 adults over multiple years, the study analyzed serum levels of different PFAS and self-reported RA cases to understand their association.
  • Results showed that higher concentrations of certain PFAS were linked to lower odds of RA, primarily in females, suggesting that exposure to these substances may influence the prevalence of RA in a sex-specific manner.

Background: Diabetes distress (DD) is a negative emotion related to diabetes management and a predictor of depression; it affects diabetic retinopathy (DR) patients' quality of life and disease outcomes. The prevalence of DD was higher in patients undergoing surgery for DR. However, few studies have been conducted on DD in DR surgery patients.

Background: Ambient particulate matter (PM) has been recognized as inducing oxidative stress, which could contribute to mitochondrial damage and dysfunction. However, studies investigating the association between ambient PM and mitochondria, particularly mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN), have yielded inconsistent results.

Methods: We conducted comprehensive literature searches to identify observational studies published before July 17, 2023, examining the association between ambient PM exposure and mtDNA-CN.

Radix Rehmanniae (RR), a famous traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) widely employed in nourishing and invigorating the kidney, has three common processing forms in clinical practice, including fresh Radix Rehmanniae (FRR), raw Radix Rehmanniae (RRR), and processed Radix Rehmanniae (PRR). However, until now, there has been less exploration of the dynamic variations in the characteristic constituents and degradation products of catalpol as a representative iridoid glycoside with the highest content in RR during the process from FRR to PRR. In this study, an ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array detector (UPLC-PDA) method was successfully established for the simultaneous determination of ten characteristic components to explore their dynamic variations in different processed products of RR.

Direct air capture (DAC) can be used to decrease the CO concentration in the atmosphere, but this requires substantial energy consumption. If residual waste carbon (in the form of bicarbonate solution) from DAC can be directly reused, it might present a novel method for overcoming the aforementioned challenges. Electrochemical CN coupling methods for synthesizing urea have garnered considerable attention for waste carbon utilization, but the carbon source is high-purity CO.
