Medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHAs) are semi-crystalline elastomers with a low melting point and high elongation at break, allowing for a wide range of applications in domestic, agricultural, industrial, and mainly medical fields. Utilizing low-cost cellulose hydrolyzed sugar as a carbon source and metabolic engineering to enhance synthesis in is a promising strategy for commercializing mcl-PHAs, but little has been attempted to improve the utilization of glucose for synthesizing mcl-PHAs. Herein, a novel acylhydrazone biosorbent (GSL) with abundant three-dimensional porous structure was successfully prepared by using low-cost starch as raw material for water pollution remediation applications. Various analytical techniques were applied to characterize the morphological structure and chemical composition. Interestingly, the adsorption efficiency of the adsorbent towards Malachite green (MG), Safranin O (SO), Cu, and sulfide in the static adsorption experiment was extremely high due to presence of ample functional groups.

Selenium supplements are beneficial to human health, however, concerns regarding the toxicity of inorganic selenium have stimulated research on safer organic compounds. The main objective of this study was to develop a novel glucosamine-selenium compound (Se-GlcN), clarify its structure, and subsequently investigate its oral toxicity and in vitro anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) activity. Electron microscopy, infrared, ultraviolet spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and thermogravimetric analyses revealed a unique binding mode of Se-GlcN, with the introduction of the Se-O bond at the C6 position, resulting in the formation of two carboxyl groups.

This study investigated the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/Kelch ECH associating protein (Keap1)/antioxidant response element (ARE) signaling pathway impact of chitooligosaccharides (COS) with a certain degree of polymerization (DP) on DN mouse models and high glucose-damaged human kidney 2 (HK-2) cells. The findings indicated that COS effectively reduced the renal function indexes (uric acid [UA], urinary albumin excretion rate [UAER], urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio [UACR], blood urea nitrogen [BUN], and creatinine [Cre]) of DN mice.

The noncovalent interactions of ammonium ion with multidentate oxygen-based host has never been reported as a reacting center in catalytic reactions. In this work, we report a reactivity enhancement process enabled by non-covalent interaction of ammonium ion, achieving the C-H functionalization of polyethylene glycols with acrylates by utilizing photoinduced co-catalysis of iridium and quinuclidine. A broad scope of alkenes can be tolerated without observing significant degradation.
