Article Synopsis
  • J-aggregates are assemblies of dyes that exhibit strong light absorption and fluorescence due to delocalized excitons, but their effectiveness is limited by local disorder and thermal decoherence.
  • To enhance exciton coherence and delocalization, researchers coupled ordered molecular dipoles to an electromagnetic mode within an optical resonator.
  • By using dielectric metasurfaces, the study achieved a 5-fold increase in luminescence intensity and reduced emission directivity, showcasing the potential of these surfaces in promoting cooperative behaviors in excitonic systems.

Learning about the strain/stress distribution in a material is essential to achieve its mechanical stability and proper functionality. Conventional techniques such as universal testing machines only apply to static samples with standardized geometry in laboratory environment. Soft mechanical sensors based on stretchable conductors, carbon-filled composites, or conductive gels possess better adaptability, but still face challenges from complicated fabrication process, dependence on extra readout device, and limited strain/stress mapping ability.

Owing to high water content and homogeneous texture, conventional hydrogels hardly reach satisfactory mechanical performance. Tensile-resistant groups and structural heterogeneity are employed to fabricate tough hydrogels. However, those techniques significantly increase the complexity and cost of material synthesis, and have only limited applicability.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares fouling behaviors of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) under normal conditions and during sludge bulking, revealing significant differences in membrane performance.
  • It was found that the MBR could operate stably for about 60 days without cleaning under normal conditions, while daily cleaning was necessary during sludge bulking due to higher specific filtration resistance (SFR) of the bulking sludge.
  • Characterization of the bulking sludge showed it had lower dewaterability, smaller particle size, and higher viscosity, with a suggested link between microbial community changes and increased membrane fouling.

Digital camera sensors use color filters on photodiodes to achieve color selectivity. As the color filters and photosensitive silicon layers are separate elements, these sensors suffer from optical cross-talk, which sets limits to the minimum pixel size. Here, we report hybrid silicon-aluminum nanostructures in the extreme limit of zero distance between color filters and sensors.

Metasurfaces supporting optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) are emerging as simple and compact optical cavities to realize polarization-vortex lasers. The winding of the polarization around the singularity defines topological charges which are generally set by the cavity design and cannot be altered without changing geometrical parameters. Here, a subwavelength-thin phase-change halide perovskite BIC metasurface functioning as a tunable polarization vortex microlaser is demonstrated.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the lamina cribrosa (LC), a key area affected by glaucoma, and explores how it changes under varying eye pressure (IOP) while keeping brain pressure (ICP) constant.
  • Eight healthy adult rhesus macaque eyes were scanned using advanced imaging techniques to analyze LC microstructure at different IOP levels.
  • Results showed that only some eyes experienced changes in the LC's structure, with variations in deformation patterns, indicating that understanding the entire depth of the LC is essential for accurate assessments of glaucoma damage.

Article Synopsis
  • A study explored the potential of visible-light optical coherence tomography (vis-OCT) to identify differences in the thickness of the inner plexiform layer (IPL) between healthy individuals and those with glaucoma, focusing on the early signs of retinal ganglion cell degeneration.
  • The research involved imaging nine healthy subjects and five glaucomatous patients, revealing significant differences in mean IPL thickness and visual field deviations between the two groups.
  • Results indicated that the middle IPL sublayer might account for most thinning observed in glaucoma, and vis-OCT showed good repeatability in measuring IPL thickness across both groups.

Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are a promising gain material for solution-processed, wavelength-tunable lasers, with potential application in displays, communications, and biomedical devices. In this work, we combine a CQD film with an array of nanoantennas, made of titanium dioxide cylinders, to achieve lasing via bound states in the continuum (BICs). Here, the BICs are symmetry-protected cavity modes with giant quality factors, arising from slab waveguide modes in the planar CQD film, coupled to the periodic nanoantenna array.

Infrared-to-visible photon upconversion could benefit applications such as photovoltaics, infrared sensing, and bioimaging. Solid-state upconversion based on triplet exciton annihilation sensitized by nanocrystals is one of the most promising approaches, albeit limited by relatively weak optical absorption. Here, we integrate the upconverting layers into a Fabry-Pérot microcavity with quality factor = 75.

The efficient removal of arsenite [As(III)] from groundwater remains a great challenge. Nanoscale oxides of Fe(III), Zr(IV), and Al(III) can selectively remove arsenic from groundwater through inner-sphere complexation. However, owing to polysilicate coatings formation on nanoparticles surface, the ubiquitous silicate exerts remarkably adverse effects on As(III) removal.
