spp. exhibit remarkable resilience to extreme environmental stresses, including thermal, acidic, desiccation, and osmotic conditions, posing significant challenges to food safety. Their thermotolerance relies on heat shock proteins (HSPs), thermotolerance genomic islands, enhanced DNA repair mechanisms, and metabolic adjustments, ensuring survival under high-temperature conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Four lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains were tested for their ability to survive harsh intestinal conditions and adhere to intestinal cells, with Lactobacillus brevis 505 showing the best performance.
  • After treatment with ciprofloxacin, mice experienced some recovery in their intestinal flora naturally, but full restoration was difficult; however, intervention with L. brevis 505 resulted in significantly better recovery of intestinal health compared to natural recovery.
  • L. brevis 505 not only helped improve the diversity and abundance of beneficial gut bacteria but also regulated immune factors, making it a promising probiotic for restoring gut microbiota after antibiotic treatment.

Cronobacter sakazakii is an opportunistic pathogen known for causing severe diseases. Mild heat treatment is commonly used in food processing, however, the pathogenic characteristics and underlying mechanisms of Cronobacter sakazakii strains remain poorly understood. In this study, we found that mild heat stress (MHS) at 52 °C can induce several deleterious effects in Cronobacter sakazakii, including damage to the cell wall, genomic DNA breakage, and misfolding of cytoplasmic proteins.

Endometrial cancer (EC) is one of the most prevalent malignancies in the female reproductive system. However, the potential functions and mechanisms of immune-related genes in the onset and progression of EC remain unclear. The immune-related gene CCL18 has been implicated in apoptosis, proliferation, invasion, metastasis, and drug resistance in various types of tumors.

Vitrification is well known for its application in the cryopreservation of blood vessels, which will address the supply-demand imbalance in vascular grafts for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Thermal stress damage and devitrification injury in umbilical arteries (UAs) require attention and resolution during the vitrification and rewarming process. In this study, we validated several cooling annealing protocols with temperatures (-130 to -100 °C) and annealing duration durations (10-20 s).

Salmonella is a major foodborne pathogen that poses a substantial risk to food safety and public health. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, antibiotic susceptibility, and genomic features of Salmonella isolates recovered from 600 retail meat samples (300 pork, 150 chicken and 150 beef) from August 2018 to October 2019 in Shaanxi, China. Overall, 40 (6.

A modified QuEChERS method coupled with high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was established for residue analysis of 39 pollutants (34 commonly used multi-class pesticides and 5 metabolites) in medlar matrices (fresh, dried, and medlar juice). Samples were extracted using water with 0.1 % formic acid: acetonitrile (5: 10, v/v).

In this study, we designed aptamer-based self-assemblies for the delivery of quinine. Two different architectures were designed by hybridizing quinine binding aptamers and aptamers targeting lactate dehydrogenase (PfLDH): nanotrains and nanoflowers. Nanotrains consisted in controlled assembly of quinine binding aptamers through base-pairing linkers.

Forchlorfenuron (CPPU) is a plant growth regulator widely applied on kiwifruit to improve yield, however, there are rarely reports on its effects on the nutrients of kiwifruits. Based on UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS, the effects of CPPU on metabolism profile and nutrient substances of two kiwifruit varieties during development were investigated by non-targeted metabolomics. A total of 115 metabolites were identified, and 29 differential metabolites were confirmed and quantified using certified reference standards.

Global climate change is the major cause of abiotic and biotic stresses that have adverse effects on agricultural productivity to an irreversible level, thus threatening to limit gains in production and imperil sustainable agriculture. These climate change-induced abiotic stresses, especially saline, drought, extreme temperature, and so on affect plant morphological, physiological, biochemical, and metabolic characteristics through various pathways and mechanisms, ultimately hindering plant growth, development, and productivity. However, overuse and other inappropriate uses of agrochemicals are not conducive to the protection of natural resources and the environment, thus hampering sustainable agricultural development.

Although productive progress has been made in colorectal cancer (CRC) researchs, CRC is the second most frequent type of malignancy and the major cause of cancer-related death among gastrointestinal cancers. As angiogenesis constitutes an important point in the control of CRC progression and metastasis, understanding the key signaling pathways that regulate CRC angiogenesis is critical in elucidating ways to inhibit CRC. Herein, we comprehensively summarized the angiogenesis-related pathways of CRC, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), Janus kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT), Wingless and int-1 (Wnt), and Notch signaling pathways.

Plant protein films are a research hotpot in the current food packaging field for their renewable and bio-compatibility, and further improving the physicochemical properties of plant protein films in combination with biodegradable materials is of great significance. In this study, we selected cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) to modify the protein films with soybean protein isolate (SPI), wheat gluten protein (WGP), and Zein, and the physicochemical properties were studied. The results showed that the hardness and opacity of Zein-based films decreased by 16.

  • - In 2021, a kindergarten in Shandong Province, China, reported twenty children with influenza-like symptoms.
  • - Researchers isolated eleven strains of Coxsackievirus A4 (CV-A4) from these pediatric cases, showing less than 93% similarity to existing CV-A4 genomes.
  • - Further studies indicated that the new strains may have undergone genetic recombination in a specific part of their genome known as the P3 region.

  • A study investigated the effects of high-dose ulinastatin on bleeding and platelet function in patients undergoing valve replacement surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).
  • Out of 273 patients, 243 received ulinastatin while 30 were in a control group, with results showing significantly less postoperative major bleeding (0.4% vs. 6.7%) and improved platelet counts in the ulinastatin group.
  • Despite these benefits, ulinastatin did not significantly affect coagulation times or increase medical costs, suggesting it is a safe and effective option for reducing complications in such surgeries.

Ultrahigh Ni-rich layered oxides have been regarded as one of the most promising cathode candidates. However, cycling instability induced by interfacial reactions and irreversible H2-H3 lattice distortion is yet to be demonstrated by an effective strategy that could construct a stable grain interface and microstructure. Here, Ni-rich cathode LiNiCoMnO is modified by B and Ti to realize the synchronous regulation of a microstructure and the oxygen framework robustness.
