Purpose: To evaluate the effect of ferrule preparation length on the fracture resistance after simulated surgical crown lengthening and after forced tooth eruption of endodontically-treated teeth restored with a carbon fiber-reinforced post-and-core system.

Methods: 40 extracted endodontically-treated mandibular first premolars were decoronated 1.0 mm coronal to the buccal cemento-enamel junction.

A simple and rapid high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method for quantifying alendronate in beagle dog plasma was developed, validated and applied to a pharmacokinetic study. The sample preparation involved coprecipitation with CaCl(2) and derivatization with o-phthalaldehyde. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a Diamonsil C(18 )(250 x 4.

We present a case report of a 48-year-old man with a huge left atrial rhabdomyosarcoma who presented as severe mitral stenosis and accepted emergency surgery. Two years later, a pathologic fracture revealed osseous metastasis, and intracardiac recurrence was detected by echocardiography. The patient died of multiple organ failure in the end.

Based on density functional theory, we systematically studied the electronic and magnetic properties of the real experimental structural phase BiCrO(3) with the space group C 2/c. It is found that the ground state is a moderately correlated Mott-Hubbard insulator with G-type antiferromagnetic structure, which is in agreement with the experimental observations. The magnetism can be qualitatively understood in terms of the superexchange mechanism via Cr1(t(2g))-O 2p-Cr2(t(2g)).

The electronic and magnetic properties of tetragonal double perovskite Sr(2)NiOsO(6) were studied by use of the density functional theory and including the spin-orbit coupling. Compensated half-metal is found if the spin-orbit coupling is not considered. Spin-orbit coupling induces orbital moments on both Ni and Os, making Sr(2)NiOsO(6) a near compensated half-metal.

Spinel ferrite, MFe 2O 4 (M = Co, Ni), ribbons with nanoporous structure were prepared by electrospinning combined with sol-gel technology. The ribbons were formed through the agglomeration of magnetic nanoparticles with PVP as the structure directing template. The length of the polycrystalline ribbons can reach millimeters, and the width of the ribbons can be tuned from several micrometers to several hundred nanometers by changing the concentration of precursor.

KCrF(3) has been systematically investigated by using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbital method within the generalized gradient approximation and the local spin density approximation plus the on-site Coulomb repulsion approach. The total energies for ferromagnetic and three different antiferromagnetic configurations are calculated in the high-temperature tetragonal and low-temperature monoclinic phases, respectively. It reveals that the ground state is the A-type antiferromagnetic in both phases.

First principles calculations using the augmented plane wave plus local orbitals method, as implemented in the WIEN2k code, have been used to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of YBaFe2O5, especially as regards the charge-orbital ordering. Although the total 3d charge disproportion is rather small, an orbital order parameter defined as the difference between t2g orbital occupations of Fe2+ and Fe3+ cations is large (0.73) and gives unambiguous evidence for charge and orbital ordering.

Self-microemulsifying drug delivery systems (SMEDDS) are useful to improve the bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs by increasing their apparent solubility through solubilization. However, very few studies, to date, have systematically examined the level of drug apparent solubility in o/w microemulsion formed by self-microemulsifying. In this study, a mixture experimental design was used to simulate the influence of the compositions on simvastatin apparent solubility quantitatively through an empirical model.

A simple, efficient and quick method has been established for the synthesis of CePO(4):Tb nanorods and CePO(4):Tb/LaPO(4) core/shell nanorods via ultrasound irradiation of inorganic salt aqueous solution under ambient conditions for 2 h. The as-prepared products were characterized by means of powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) spectra and lifetimes. TEM micrographs show that all of the as-prepared cerium phosphate products have rod-like shape, and have a relatively high degree of crystallinity and uniformity.

We have previously reported that the bile acids chenodeoxycholate (CDCA) and ursodeoxycholate (UDCA) decreased PGE1-induced cAMP production in a time- and dose-dependent manner not only in hepatocytes but also in nonhepatic cells, including dermal fibroblasts. In the present study, we investigated the physiological relevance of this cAMP modulatory action of bile acids. PGE1 induced cAMP production in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

Core binding factor alpha1 (Cbfa1) is a member of the runt family of transcription factors, which appears to play a pivotal role in regulating the differentiation of osteoblastic precursors and the activity of mature osteoblasts. Total flavonoids of Herba epimedii (HEF) is a recognized bone anabolic agent, but there is lack of reports on the modulation of Cbfa1 expression by HEF. Here we investigated the effect of HEF on Cbfa1 expression in the bone of ovariectomized (OVX) rats.

Molybdenum trioxide nanobelts and prism-like particles with good crystallinity and high surface areas have been prepared by a facile hydrothermal method, and the morphology could be controlled by using different inorganic salts, such as KNO3, Ca(NO3)2 , La(NO3)3, etc. The possible growth mechanism of molybdenum trioxide prism-like particles is discussed on the basis of the presence of H+ and the modification of metal cations. The as-prepared nanomaterials are characterized by means of powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and ultraviolet and visible spectroscopy (UV-vis).

Objectives: To investigate the histological architecture of human external jugular vein and greater saphenous vein and to determine the feasibility of using autogenous external jugular vein for reconstruction of carotid artery defects.

Methods: Specimens of 3 external jugular veins and greater saphenous vein and 1 segment of common carotid artery resected due to involvement of malignant tumor were available. The specimens were subjected to HE staining and examined under light microscopy.
