Candidiasis is an infectious disease caused by some fungi of the genus Candida. In Brazil, the incidence rate is higher than in European countries and the United States, and health problems occur mainly due to the virulence factors of the fungi, which have made treatment with commercial drugs difficult. Considering the context, plants rich in phenolic compounds, such as those of the genus Piper, have been studied due to their antimicrobial properties.

Thiadiazines are heterocyclic compounds known for some pharmacological activities. However, the ability of these compounds and their derivatives to act as antibacterial agents and inhibitors of the efflux system in resistant bacteria remains unknown. This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial and NorA efflux pump inhibitory activities of thiadiazine-derived compounds (IJ14, IJ15, IJ16, IJ17, IJ18, IJ19, and IJ20) against the Staphylococcus aureus 1199B strain.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how the perfusion index (PI) response to a specific stress test can indicate sympathetic-vascular reactions in patients with sepsis compared to healthy individuals and critically ill patients without sepsis.
  • Three groups were analyzed: healthy patients (Group A), critically ill patients without sepsis (Group B), and septic patients (Group C), focusing on their hemodynamic responses and changes in the perfusion index during a semiorthostatic stress test.
  • Findings showed that healthy individuals exhibited expected changes in cardiac function, while septic patients displayed variable responses; notably, those with a decreased perfusion index after the test had better outcomes (lower SOFA scores) after 72 hours, suggesting that monitoring the PI may

The work investigates the effect of the estragole complex encapsulated in beta-cyclodextrin (ES/β-CD) in modulating bacterial resistance, specifically in strains expressing NorA and MepA efflux pumps. Efflux pumps are mechanisms that bacteria use to resist antibiotics by expelling them from the cell. Methodology: Several compounds and antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin, were used to evaluate the antimicrobial activity and the ability of the ES/β-CD complex to reverse resistance.

Background: This study will be the first scoping review dedicated to investigating screening strategies for eating disorders specifically performed in the primary health care setting, as no comprehensive examination has been performed to date. Our primary aim is to explore the available literature and assess and identify validated screening strategies for eating disorders in adolescents and adults within the primary care context.

Methods: The study protocol was developed following the guidance outlined by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols and the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews.

  • Limonene, a compound in essential oils, demonstrates various health benefits like antifungal and antioxidant properties, but its effects can vary based on concentration, showing a biphasic response.
  • The study investigates limonene's impact on rat aorta contractions, revealing it can enhance or inhibit contractions depending on the dose, particularly with phenylephrine.
  • Understanding these dose-dependent effects is crucial for determining safe and effective therapeutic uses of limonene in clinical settings.

Article Synopsis
  • A 10-year-old child with previously stable idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy was hospitalized due to a sudden decline in heart function.
  • Testing revealed elevated NT-proBNP levels and a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, leading to the assumption of myocarditis caused by the virus.
  • After experiencing multiple hospitalizations and worsening cardiac conditions over seven months, the child eventually received a heart transplant.

The misuse of antibiotics has led to an alarming increase in bacterial strains resistant to these drugs. Efflux pumps, which expel antibiotics from bacterial cells, have emerged as one of the key mechanisms of bacterial resistance. In the quest to combat and mitigate bacterial resistance, researchers have turned their attention to efflux pump inhibitors as a potential solution.

Article Synopsis
  • This data descriptor introduces a specialized dataset focused on identifying pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa from whole blood samples using advanced mass spectrometry techniques.
  • The dataset employs a unique three-tier system, which includes spectral libraries for identifying biomarkers, MS data for optimizing biomarker panels, and PRM data from sepsis patients, achieving 83.3% sensitivity in under seven hours.
  • It aims to serve as a vital resource for developing bioinformatic tools and proposing biomarker panels, ultimately enhancing pathogen detection and supporting studies on antimicrobial resistance and epidemiology.

Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium responsible for resistance to multiple drugs and the efflux system is widely studied among the resistance mechanisms developed by this species. The present study evaluates the inhibition of the MepA efflux pump by thiadiazine-derived compounds. For this purpose, thiadiazine-derived compounds (IJ-14 to IJ-20) were tested against S.

Animals can adjust their diet to maximize energy or nutritional intake. For example, birds often target fruits that match their beak size because those fruits can be consumed more efficiently. We hypothesized that pressure to optimize diet-measured as matching between fruit and beak size-increases under stressful environments, such as those that determine species' range edges.

Among the most consumed foods in the world is potato, which occupies the first place as a non-grain commodity, demonstrating the importance of its assessment concerning the population's food safety. In this study, the nutrients Ca, Mg, K, P, Cu, Mn, Fe, and Zn and the potentially toxic trace elements Cd, Cr, and Pb were evaluated considering their total contents, bioaccessible and bioavailable fractions in different potato cultivars, in an unpublished approach in the literature. The in vitro standard gastrointestinal digestion method (INFOGEST) and a model of the intestinal epithelial barrier using the Caco-2 cell line were applied for investigate the presence of metals in potato.

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have revolutionized therapy for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) over the last two decades. However, some patients still do not achieve an adequate response to these drugs, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is indicated in this scenario. We present the results of a 20-year follow-up study of 70 patients who underwent transplantation after TKI failure.

The occurrence of bacterial resistance has been increasing, compromising the treatment of various infections. The high virulence of Staphylococcus aureus allows for the maintenance of the infectious process, causing many deaths and hospitalizations. The MepA and NorA efflux pumps are transporter proteins responsible for expelling antimicrobial agents such as fluoroquinolones from the bacterial cell.

Sea turtle mortality is often related to materials that reach the coast from different anthropic activities worldwide. This study aimed to investigate whether sea turtle mortality was related to older marine problems, such as solid waste, or one of the largest oil spill accidents on the Brazilian coast, that occurred in 2019. We posed three questions: 1) Are there solid residues in the digestive tract samples, and which typology is the most abundant? 2) Can meso‑ and macro-waste marine pollutants cause mortality? 3) Is the dark material found really oil? A total of 25 gastrointestinal content (GC) samples were obtained, of which 22 ingested waste of anthropogenic origin and 18 were necropsied.
