Neural gamma oscillations (indicatively 30-100 Hz) are ubiquitous: they are associated with a broad range of functions in multiple cortical areas and across many animal species. Experimental and computational works established gamma rhythms as a global emergent property of neuronal networks generated by the balanced and coordinated interaction of excitation and inhibition. Coherently, gamma activity is strongly influenced by the alterations of synaptic dynamics which are often associated with pathological neural dysfunctions.

Experience-dependent neuronal changes and brain plasticity occur throughout life as animals adapt to their environment. Structural, morphological, and cellular modifications promoted by exposure to environmental enrichment (EE) have been reported to improve neuronal functions, increase hippocampal neurogenesis, ameliorate memory tasks and cognitive performance, and have beneficial effects on several brain diseases, including cancer. We specifically addressed the role of the EE in counteracting neuronal dysfunction in mice bearing glioma in the primary visual cortex.

In rodents V1 two ranges within the γ band are sensitive to contrast: a broad γ band (BB) increasing with contrast, and a narrow γ band (NB), peaking at ∼60 Hz, decreasing with contrast. Objective: Ultrasounds (US) use in neural engineering is so far mainly limited to ablation through high intensity focused ultrasound, but interesting preliminary results show that low intensity low frequency ultrasound could be used instead to modulate neural activity. However, the extent of this modulatory ability of US is still unclear, as in in vivo studies it is hard to disentangle the contribution to neural responses of direct activation of the neuron by US stimulation and indirect activation due either to sensory response to mechanical stimulation associated to US, or to propagation of activity from neighboring areas. Here, we aim to show how to separate the three effects and assess the presence of direct response to US stimulation in zebrafish.

In this proof-of-concept study, a methodology is proposed to systematically analyze large data historians of secondary pharmaceutical manufacturing systems using data mining techniques. The objective is to develop an approach enabling to automatically retrieve operation-relevant information that can assist the management in the periodic review of a manufactory system. The proposed methodology allows one to automatically perform three tasks: the identification of single batches within the entire data-sequence of the historical dataset, the identification of distinct operating phases within each batch, and the characterization of a batch with respect to an assigned multivariate set of operating characteristics.

Within the European Defense Agency (EDA), the Protection of Marine Mammals (PoMM) project, a comprehensive common marine mammal database essential for risk mitigation tools, was established. The database, built on an extensive dataset collection with the focus on areas of operational interest for European navies, consists of annual and seasonal distribution and density maps, random and systematic sightings, an encyclopedia providing knowledge on the characteristics of 126 marine mammal species, data on marine mammal protection areas, and audio information including numerous examples of various vocalizations. Special investigations on marine mammal acoustics were carried out to improve the detection and classification capabilities.

Septic cholangiohepatitis was diagnosed in an 11-year-old Warmblood gelding with a history of intermittent colic and fever. Klebsiella pneumoniae, susceptible to gentamicin, was cultured from the biopsy specimen. However, treatment with gentamicin was unsuccessful, and histologic examination and bacteriologic culture of a biopsy specimen obtained 3 weeks later revealed progression of the hepatic inflammation and yielded growth of gentamicin-resistant K pneumoniae.
