Shifts in cytosolic pH have been recognized as key signaling events and mounting evidence supports the interdependence between H and Ca signaling in eukaryotic cells. Among the cellular pH-stats, K/H exchange at various membranes is paramount in plant cells. Vacuolar K/H exchangers of the NHX (Na,K/H exchanger) family control luminal pH and, together with K and H transporters at the plasma membrane, have been suggested to also regulate cytoplasmic pH.

Article Synopsis
  • Chagas disease (ChD) is a significant health issue in Latin America, with a focus on whether orally transmitted infections correlate with a higher risk of developing chronic Chagasic cardiopathy (CCC).
  • A study over 10 years involving 106 patients from a 2007 outbreak showed initial improvement in health post-treatment, with no deaths due to ChD after the acute phase.
  • By the end of the study, there were no new cases classified as CCC, and the incidence of various heart-related issues decreased, though some children continued to show persistent conditions.

Cation/Proton Antiporters (CPA) acting in all biological membranes regulate the volume and pH of cells and of intracellular organelles. A key issue with these proteins is their structure-function relationships since they present intrinsic regulatory features that rely on structural determinants, including pH sensitivity and the stoichiometry of ion exchange. Crystal structures are only available for prokaryotic CPA, whereas the eukaryotic ones have been modeled using the former as templates.

Purpose: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a heterogeneous malignant lymphoid neoplasm and is the most common subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in adults. More than half of patients with DLBCL can achieve remission with standard R-CHOP regimes; however, approximately 30-40% of patients are still failing this standard therapy, which remains as an important cause of progression and mortality of this disease. It is necessary to have diagnostic and monitoring tools that allow us to improve the accuracy of prognosis in these patients.

Introduction: Although the COVID-19 pandemic began over 2 years ago, responses from institutions have not been thoroughly documented. Because of constantly evolving guidance from regulatory and public health agencies, the traditional evidence-based risk assessment process was disrupted. It took time to obtain enough actionable information about the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus and its transmission to be able to inform decision making and consistently make accurate recommendations.
