Testing the neurodevelopmental, trauma and developmental risk factor models of psychosis using a naturalistic experiment.

Background: The neurodevelopmental and trauma theories are two widely cited models of psychosis. A third - the developmental risk factor model (DRFM) - recognises the combined role of neurodevelopmental risks and trauma. Our objective was to test these theories using preterm populations as a natural experiment, given the high prevalence of neurodevelopmental deficits and exposure to trauma.

Androgen and mineralocorticoid receptors are present on the germinal disc region in laying hens: Potential mediators of sex ratio adjustment in birds?

Female birds skew offspring sex ratios based on environmental and social stimuli; however, the mechanism mediating this phenomenon remains unknown. Growing evidence suggests that testosterone and corticosterone may influence meiosis, as they skew sex ratios when given immediately before chromosomal segregation. It is unclear if these hormones act on the germinal disc (GD) or through a downstream mediator.

Association of sport participation in preterm and full term born children and body and fat mass indices from age 3 to 14 years.

Objectives: To assess the association of gestational age groups (VP: <32 weeks, MP: 32-33 weeks, LP: 34-36 weeks and FT: ≥37 weeks of gestation) and club sport participation in childhood on body mass index (BMI), fat free mass index (FFMI) and fat mass index (FMI).

Design: Longitudinal, cross sectional.

Methods: BMI (age 3, 5, 7, 11 and 14 years; N=10581-14702) and FFMI/FMI (age 7, 11 and 14 years; N=10446-12996) and consistent club sport participation at age 5, 7 and 11 years (ranging from never participating to participating at all three ages) were assessed prospectively.

The economic crisis and primary health care in the SUS of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This paper addresses the primary health care crisis of Rio de Janeiro public health system as of 2018. This municipality has experienced a robust primary care expansion since 2009, adopting Social Organizations for recruiting professionals and managing services, qualifying the infrastructure of units and prioritizing family and community medicine, as well as adopting management practices such as standardized offers, evaluation and pay-for-performance compensation, marketing, among others. Given the recent economic crisis, the municipal manager decided to reduce family health teams, considering the current National Policy of Primary Care and arguing that it is possible to optimize resources (doing more with less).

Based on his experiences as a critic and intellectual, he comments on the attacks on culture and the production of knowledge that we have witnessed in Brazil. He reminds us that no democracy is a fully-fledged ontological reality and highlights the role of schools and universities in mobilizing citizenship and spreading republican values.

MicroRNA miR-222 mediates pioglitazone beneficial effects on skeletal muscle of diet-induced obese mice.

Pioglitazone belongs to the class of drugs thiazolidinediones (TZDs) and is an oral hypoglycemic drug, used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, which improves insulin sensitivity in target tissues. Adipose tissue is the main target of pioglitazone, a PPARg and PPARa agonist; however, studies also point to skeletal muscle as a target. Non-PPAR targets of TZDs have been described, thus we aimed to study the direct effects of pioglitazone on skeletal muscle and the possible role of microRNAs as targets of this drug.

The recent reemergence of yellow fever virus (YFV) in Brazil has raised serious concerns due to the rapid dissemination of the virus in the southeastern region. To better understand YFV genetic diversity and dynamics during the recent outbreak in southeastern Brazil, we generated 18 complete and nearly complete genomes from the peak of the epidemic curve from nonhuman primates (NHPs) and human infected cases across the Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro states. Genomic sequencing of 18 YFV genomes revealed the estimated timing, source, and likely routes of yellow fever virus transmission and dispersion during one of the largest outbreaks ever registered in Brazil.

Autonomic nervous system response to remote ischemic conditioning: heart rate variability assessment.

Background: Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) is a procedure applied in a limb for triggering endogenous protective pathways in distant organs, namely brain or heart. The underlying mechanisms of RIC are still not fully understood, and it is hypothesized they are mediated either by humoral factors, immune cells and/or the autonomic nervous system. Herein, heart rate variability (HRV) was used to evaluate the electrophysiological processes occurring in the heart during RIC and, in turn to assess the role of autonomic nervous system.

Dietary ractopamine supplementation of pregnant sows: what are the impacts on the neonate?

The use of additives such as ractopamine (Rac) in pregnant sows during early-mid pregnancy is an alternative to increase foetal and progeny growth and development. However, Rac supplementation in finishing pigs can lead to behavioural and physiological changes similar to the typical stress responses. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation with Rac in pregnant sows from day 25 to 50 of gestation (pre-hyperplastic stage) on piglet's vitality, blood parameters, number, diameter and perimeter of muscle fibres in semitendinosus muscle and developmental characteristics of piglets at birth to weaning.

Cationic solid lipid nanoparticles (cSLNs) are considered as one of the most effective lipid nanocarriers for delivery of low water-solubility compounds and genetic materials. As the excipients used in the cSLN production are generally regarded as safe (GRAS), the formulations are granted as non-toxic. However, the toxicological profile of new SLN-based formulations should always be performed to confirm that the delivery systems themselves may not impose risks to the human health.

Graphene-Based Nanomaterials in Soil: Ecotoxicity Assessment Using Reduced Full Life Cycle.

Graphene-based nanomaterials (GBNs) possess unique physicochemical properties, allowing a wide range of applications in physical, chemical, and biomedical fields. Although GBNs are broadly used, information about their adverse effects on ecosystem health, especially in the terrestrial environment, is limited. Therefore, this study aims to assess the toxicity of two commonly used derivatives of GBNs, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), in the soil invertebrate using a reduced full life cycle test.

Adiponectin is required for pioglitazone-induced improvements in hepatic steatosis in mice fed a high-fat diet.

Pioglitazone has been used for the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) related to diabetes. The role of adiponectin in pioglitazone-induced improvements in NAFLD was studied by using wild-type (adipoWT) and adiponectin knockout (adipoKO) mice. High-fat diet fed mice were insulin resistant, glucose intolerant and had increased hepatic lipid accumulation as evidenced by increased NAFLD activity score.
