Background: Elevation of cardiac troponin (cTn) is associated with the worst prognosis not only in cardiovascular disease but also in non-cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study is to verify if cTn has a prognostic role in elderly and very elderly coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients.
Methods: This study enrolled consecutive COVID-19 elderly patients hospitalized at INRCA hospital, with available admission high sensitivity cardiac troponin T (HS-cTnT) level.
The present study examines the extent to which clients with serious mental illnesses (SMI) enrolled in a social-learning program (SLP) within a maximum-security state hospital were able to achieve discharge to less restrictive settings without requiring a return to maximum security. Retrospective analyses were undertaken to examine several time periods of the SLP's operation within maximum security. From 1988 to 2019, 248 clients were discharged from the SLP.

Age is a risk factor also for coronary artery disease (CAD), and with the evolution of preventive care, the first event (acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)) takes place at a later age.

Background: Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), the current primary parameter of risk stratification for ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) in structural heart diseases is burdened by many limitations.
Methods: In this retrospective, observational study, all consecutive patients with structural heart disease were admitted for ICD implantation.
This study determined if schizophrenia symptom severity and independent living skills at discharge, or while residing in the community, predicted re-hospitalization for discharged patients with schizophrenia. A total of 60 patients were discharged from a state psychiatric hospital and had completed assessments at discharge, 6 months, and 1 year post discharge. There were 12 patients who were re-hospitalized.

Detailed and systematic examination of social and psychiatric histories revealed that the group with the most persistent levels of aggression differed from the other two groups with respect to frequency of self-harming behavior, intellectual impairment, hypothyroidism, a childhood diagnosis of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and age of onset of psychiatric and behavioral symptoms. The high-aggression group also had the highest rate of childhood physical and sexual abuse, but the difference between that group and the two lower aggression groups did not achieve statistical significance.

Cardiotoxicity of anticancer therapies represents a relevant problem due to its insidious onset and potentially irreversible cardiac damage. The aim of the present study was to test whether 2D speckle tracking analysis can help in predicting overt systolic dysfunction.

Psychopharmacological and most psychosocial interventions have been shown to have limited effect in improving attentional capacity. That said, one form of psychosocial treatment, attention shaping procedures (ASP), has been repeatedly demonstrated to produce significant and meaningful change in various aspects of participant attentiveness behaviors.

Procovery is a facilitated mutual support group designed to build hope and a sense of social inclusion by raising consciousness and helping people develop an understanding of the ways one can move toward recovery in their own lives. This evaluation sought to determine both consumer outcomes and perceptions of the program and implementation efforts held by consumers and the facilitators of the intervention.

The trauma-informed care perspective suggests that the use of S/R with previously abused inpatients may result in retraumatization due to mental associations between childhood trauma and the experience during S/R. Thus, though one would expect to see efforts on the part of inpatient psychiatric facilities to limit S/R of previously abused inpatients, research suggests that trauma victims may be more likely to experience S/R.

Methods: Seclusion and restraint records were examined for 622 patients who were admitted during a five-year period (September 2001 to September 2006) and had a stay of at least 60 days. Seclusion and restraint episodes were recorded as bimonthly counts over the first two years after the initial admission.
Background: Trace element external quality assessment schemes monitor laboratory performance and provide a stimulus for improvement in accuracy. However, monitoring of participant performance varies according to the scheme and can lead to conflicting conclusions.
Methods: Quality specifications based on biological intra- and interindividual variability were calculated and compared to those currently used by various trace element external quality assessment schemes for plasma or serum copper, zinc, and selenium concentrations.
Disturbances in sustained attention commonly interfere with the ability of persons with schizophrenia to benefit from evidence-based psychosocial treatments. Cognitive remediation interventions have thus far demonstrated minimal effects on attention, as have medications. There is thus a gap between the existence of effective psychosocial treatments and patients' ability to effectively engage in and benefit from them.

Ascorbic acid, present at low concentrations in saliva, is actively secreted into the gastric lumen. We report that ascorbic acid added to human saliva at pH 2 was consumed within a few minutes, regenerating HNO(2), whereas uric acid was consumed relatively slowly in a nitrite-dependent manner.

Objectives: To compare how the Directive has been implemented at a national level in EU countries and to determine whether workers receive equivalent protection.
Methods: Information on selected key issues was collected from 14 EU countries by means of a structured questionnaire.
Results: National occupational exposure limit values generally reflect that set by the Directive (0.
According to recently issued (UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17025, UNI CEI ENV 13005 and prEN ISO 15189) standards, to assure the quality of analytical results and their comparability in time and in different places, testing and clinical laboratories must demonstrate to use validated methods, guarantee the traceability of their measurements and state the measurement uncertainty associated with each result. For some SI quantities, such as the mass, the traceability to SI and the estimate of measurement uncertainty are warranted by established methods. In the clinical laboratory and especially in preventive, environmental and occupational laboratory medicine, specific difficulties arise to warrant the traceability to the mole.

Because the main source of environmental exposure has been the use of leaded gasoline, its phase-out has led to decreased lead concentrations in the general population. Therefore, validated analytical methods for the determination of lower lead concentrations in blood (<150 microg/L) are needed.

Methods: Real results for blood lead and serum aluminum assays, reported by participants in Italian and United Kingdom EQASs, were evaluated according to individual scheme scoring criteria. The same results were then used to produce z scores using scheme-based between-laboratory SDs as the estimate of variability to determine whether simple performance-derived quality specifications produced better agreement among schemes.
Objective: The combination of paclitaxel and platinum compounds is considered the best first-line regimen for advanced ovarian carcinoma. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a paclitaxel and carboplatin combination in pretreated patients who recurred within 24 months after a complete clinical response with the same regimen used as first-line chemotherapy.
Methods: 18 patients were included in this study.
The use of chemicals warrants many benefits on which modern society is entirely dependent. On the other hand, the lack of reliable information about the impact of the use of chemicals raises increasing concern. In order to guarantee the safety of chemicals it is mandatory to proceed to risk assessment, which in turn consists of hazard evaluation and exposure estimation.
