Background: Studies comparing continuous renal replacement therapy modalities are lacking. Theoretically, continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH) could be more effective than continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF), and may be associated with fewer complications; however, there are no published data to support this hypothesis.

Objective: To examine the effect of CVVH on mortality and other clinically important outcomes compared with CVVHDF in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting.

MurAs (enolpyruvyl-UDP-GlcNAc synthases) from pathogenic bacteria such as Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease) and tuberculosis are fosfomycin resistant because an Asp-for-Cys substitution prevents them from being alkylated by this epoxide antibiotic. Previous attempts to characterize naturally Asp-containing MurAs have resulted in no protein or no activity. We have expressed and characterized His-tagged Lyme disease MurA (Bb_MurA(H6)).

Tissue engineering of the annulus fibrosus(AF), a component of the intervertebral disc, has proven to be challenging due to its complex oriented lamellar structure. Previously it was demonstrated that polyurethane (PU) scaffolds containing an anionic dihydroxy oligomers (ADO) may be suitable to use in this application. The current study examines whether matrix protein(s) coatings (collagen type I, collagen type I and fibronectin, fibronectin, or vitronectin) would promote cell and collagen orientation that more closely mimics native AF.
