Substantial Mercury Releases and Local Deposition from Permafrost Peatland Wildfires in Southwestern Alaska.

Increasing wildfire activity at high northern latitudes has the potential to mobilize large amounts of terrestrial mercury (Hg). However, understanding implications for Hg cycling and ecosystems is hindered by sparse research on peatland wildfire Hg emissions. In this study, we used measurements of soil organic carbon (SOC) and Hg, burn depth, and environmental indices derived from satellite remote sensing to develop machine learning models for predicting Hg emissions from major wildfires in the permafrost peatland of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) in southwestern Alaska.

Revolution in diet therapy for inflammatory bowel disease.

Until recently, diet as a therapeutic tool to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has not been proven effective. Nearly a century in the making we are in the grips of a revolution in diet therapies for IBD, driven by emerging data revealing diet as a key environmental factor associated with IBD susceptibility, and observational studies suggesting that dietary intake may play a role in the disease course of established IBD. This review summarizes the current evidence for diets trialed as induction and maintenance therapy for IBD.

Maintaining the structure of cardiac membranes and membrane organelles is essential for heart function. A critical cardiac membrane organelle is the transverse tubule system (called the t-tubule system) which is an invagination of the surface membrane. A unique structural characteristic of the cardiac muscle t-tubule system is the extension of the extracellular matrix (ECM) from the surface membrane into the t-tubule lumen.

Although modern humans left Africa multiple times over 100,000 years ago, those broadly ancestral to non-Africans dispersed less than 100,000 years ago. Most models hold that these events occurred through green corridors created during humid periods because arid intervals constrained population movements. Here we report an archaeological site-Shinfa-Metema 1, in the lowlands of northwest Ethiopia, with Youngest Toba Tuff cryptotephra dated to around 74,000 years ago-that provides early and rare evidence of intensive riverine-based foraging aided by the likely adoption of the bow and arrow.

How persistent infection overcomes peripheral tolerance mechanisms to cause T cell-mediated autoimmune disease.

T cells help orchestrate immune responses to pathogens, and their aberrant regulation can trigger autoimmunity. Recent studies highlight that a threshold number of T cells (a quorum) must be activated in a tissue to mount a functional immune response. These collective effects allow the T cell repertoire to respond to pathogens while suppressing autoimmunity due to circulating autoreactive T cells.

The effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy for depression in women with breast cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Depression is a common co-morbidity in women with breast cancer. Previous systematic reviews investigating cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for depression in this population based their conclusions on findings from studies with varying and often limited specificity, quality and/or quantity of CBT within their interventions.

Aim: To determine the effectiveness of a specific, well-evidenced CBT protocol for depression in women with breast cancer.

We present the case of a 42-year-old Hispanic woman who initially identified intermittent upper right abdominal pain, which worsened over the last four days before the presentation.

Emergence of Inducible Macrolide Resistance in Mycobacterium chelonae Due to Broad-Host-Range Plasmid and Chromosomal Variants of the Novel 23S rRNA Methylase Gene, (55).

Macrolides are a mainstay of therapy for infections due to nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). Among rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM), inducible macrolide resistance is associated with four chromosomal 23S rRNA methylase () genes. Beginning in 2018, we detected high-level inducible clarithromycin resistance (MICs of ≥16μg/mL) in clinical isolates of Mycobacterium chelonae, an RGM species not previously known to contain genes.

The microenvironment of solid tumors is characterized by oxygen and glucose deprivation. Acss2/HIF-2 signaling coordinates essential genetic regulators including acetate-dependent acetyl CoA synthetase 2 (Acss2), Creb binding protein (Cbp), Sirtuin 1 (Sirt1), and Hypoxia Inducible Factor 2α (HIF-2α). We previously shown in mice that exogenous acetate augments growth and metastasis of flank tumors derived from fibrosarcoma-derived HT1080 cells in an Acss2/HIF-2 dependent manner.

Lessons from an audit of exclusive enteral nutrition in adult inpatients and outpatients with active Crohn's disease: a single-centre experience.

Objective: To evaluate clinical outcomes, patterns of use, tolerance and nutritional outcomes of exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) in adults with Crohn's disease and to compare initiation in the inpatient compared with ambulatory care setting.

Heterodyne detection is a ubiquitous tool in spectroscopy for the simultaneous detection of intensity and phase of light. However, the need for phase stability hinders the application of heterodyne detection to electronic spectroscopy. We present an interferometric design for a phase-sensitive electronic sum frequency generation (e-SFG) spectrometer in the time domain with lock-in detection.

When New York City was the COVID-19 pandemic epicenter: The impact on trauma care.

Background: During early spring 2020, New York City (NYC) rapidly became the first US epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic. With an unparalleled strain on health care resources, we sought to investigate the impact of the pandemic on trauma visits and mortality in the United States' largest municipal hospital system.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective multicenter cohort study of the five level 1 trauma centers in NYC's public health care system, New York City's Health and Hospitals Corporation.

Dietary management of adults with IBD - the emerging role of dietary therapy.

Historically, dietitians played a minor part in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Patients were commonly referred for consequences of uncontrolled disease, such as malnutrition and bowel obstruction risk. Today, dietitians are fundamental members of the multidisciplinary IBD team, from educating on the role of diet at diagnosis and throughout the lifespan of a patient with IBD to guiding primary induction therapy.

In yeast, glucose induction of HXT (glucose transporter gene) expression is achieved via the Rgt2 and Snf3 glucose sensing receptor (GSR)-mediated signal transduction pathway. The membrane-associated casein kinases Yck1 and Yck2 (Ycks) are involved in this pathway, but their exact role remains unclear. Previous work suggests that the Ycks are activated by the glucose-bound GSRs and transmit the glucose signal from the plasma membrane to the nucleus.
