Increasing wildfire activity at high northern latitudes has the potential to mobilize large amounts of terrestrial mercury (Hg). However, understanding implications for Hg cycling and ecosystems is hindered by sparse research on peatland wildfire Hg emissions. In this study, we used measurements of soil organic carbon (SOC) and Hg, burn depth, and environmental indices derived from satellite remote sensing to develop machine learning models for predicting Hg emissions from major wildfires in the permafrost peatland of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) in southwestern Alaska.

Until recently, diet as a therapeutic tool to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has not been proven effective. Nearly a century in the making we are in the grips of a revolution in diet therapies for IBD, driven by emerging data revealing diet as a key environmental factor associated with IBD susceptibility, and observational studies suggesting that dietary intake may play a role in the disease course of established IBD. This review summarizes the current evidence for diets trialed as induction and maintenance therapy for IBD.

Although modern humans left Africa multiple times over 100,000 years ago, those broadly ancestral to non-Africans dispersed less than 100,000 years ago. Most models hold that these events occurred through green corridors created during humid periods because arid intervals constrained population movements. Here we report an archaeological site-Shinfa-Metema 1, in the lowlands of northwest Ethiopia, with Youngest Toba Tuff cryptotephra dated to around 74,000 years ago-that provides early and rare evidence of intensive riverine-based foraging aided by the likely adoption of the bow and arrow.

Macrolides are a mainstay of therapy for infections due to nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). Among rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM), inducible macrolide resistance is associated with four chromosomal 23S rRNA methylase () genes. Beginning in 2018, we detected high-level inducible clarithromycin resistance (MICs of ≥16μg/mL) in clinical isolates of Mycobacterium chelonae, an RGM species not previously known to contain genes.

The microenvironment of solid tumors is characterized by oxygen and glucose deprivation. Acss2/HIF-2 signaling coordinates essential genetic regulators including acetate-dependent acetyl CoA synthetase 2 (Acss2), Creb binding protein (Cbp), Sirtuin 1 (Sirt1), and Hypoxia Inducible Factor 2α (HIF-2α). In yeast, glucose induction of HXT (glucose transporter gene) expression is achieved via the Rgt2 and Snf3 glucose sensing receptor (GSR)-mediated signal transduction pathway. The membrane-associated casein kinases Yck1 and Yck2 (Ycks) are involved in this pathway, but their exact role remains unclear. Previous work suggests that the Ycks are activated by the glucose-bound GSRs and transmit the glucose signal from the plasma membrane to the nucleus.
