Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of mesenteric lymph node (MLN) involvement in the prognosis of advanced ovarian cancer (AOC) patients who underwent surgeries from 2007 to 2017.
  • Out of 83 patients analyzed, 51.8% had positive MLN involvement, which correlated significantly with involvement in pelvic and aortic lymph nodes and deeper bowel infiltration.
  • The findings suggest that negative MLN status is associated with better overall and disease-free survival, highlighting the importance of radical bowel resection during surgery for AOC with bowel involvement.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the outcomes of pelvic lymphadenectomy in early-stage endometrial cancer, focusing on how age and body mass index affect survival rates.
  • Analyses showed that patients over 65 years have significantly lower cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS) rates compared to younger patients, regardless of lymphadenectomy status.
  • The results indicate that older age, higher tumor grade, and higher stage are linked to worse prognoses, and obesity also contributes negatively to outcomes in older patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Pelvic lymph nodes often harbor tumors in early-stage endometrial cancer, and a randomized trial was conducted to examine if adding pelvic systematic lymphadenectomy to standard surgery improves patient survival outcomes.
  • The study included 514 patients with early-stage endometrial cancer, randomly assigned to either undergo pelvic lymphadenectomy (264 patients) or not (250 patients), with various clinical data collected post-surgery.
  • Results showed that lymphadenectomy significantly increased the number of lymph nodes removed and improved surgical staging by detecting more metastases, but it also led to higher rates of postoperative complications.

Aim: In this article, for the first time, we investigate the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in ovarian epithelial neoplasms from a group of 71 Italian women. The follow ups of the patients with or without HPV DNA were also considered to evaluate whether HPV DNA in these tumors could be an indicator of prognosis.

Methods: HPV DNA was evaluated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of ultrasonography and gross examination in detecting myometrial infiltration and tumor differentiation in patients with stage I endometrial cancer.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 75 patients, finding 60% concordance between biopsy results and final histology, with ultrasonography showing a diagnostic accuracy of 73% and gross examination at 82.6%.
  • The findings suggest that these non-invasive methods can reliably predict myometrial invasion in low-risk patients, potentially allowing them to avoid unnecessary lymphadenectomy.

Objectives: We analyzed clinical data and pathological features of six cases of malignant endometrial polyps, to compare these with other examples reported in literature and to define the features of endometrial cancer arising in polyps. Moreover, to clarify the mechanisms of carcinogenesis in malignant endometrial polyps we examined the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), P53 and Ki 67 and their relationships with clinicopathologic characteristics.

Methods: The surgical pathology files of the Pathology Department of Parma University were searched for cases of endometrial polyps with nests of endometrial carcinomas, from the years 2002-2005.

In this study, we evaluated the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in organs of the female upper genital tract, using nine hysterectomy and salpingo-oophorectomy specimens affected by HPV-positive invasive cervical carcinomas, to establish if cervical HPV infection can spread to upper tracts of the female genital system. HPV DNA was evaluated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in all cervical carcinomas as well as in all tracts of the genital system. Then, these data were compared with the results obtained from PCR study of five other hysterectomy and salpingo-oophorectomy specimens (control cases).

Patients with high-risk endometrial carcinoma (stage IcG3, IIG3 with myometrial invasion >50%, and III) receive adjuvant therapy after surgery but it is not clear whether radiotherapy (RT) or chemotherapy (CT) is better. We randomly assigned 345 patients with high-risk endometrial carcinoma to adjuvant CT (cisplatin (50 mg m(-2)), doxorubicin (45 mg m(-2)), cyclophosphamide (600 mg m(-2)) every 28 days for five cycles, or external RT (45-50 Gy on a 5 days week(-1) schedule). The primary end points were overall and progression-free survival.
