Canine angiostrongylosis in Italy: occurrence of Angiostrongylus vasorum in dogs with compatible clinical pictures.

This study evaluated the perception of veterinarians in including the emerging metastrongyloid Angiostrongylus vasorum in the differential diagnosis for dogs referred with appropriate signs. Veterinarians at teaching hospitals, private practices or kennels collected faecal samples from 606 symptomatic dogs in six different areas of Italy. The samples were examined with the Baermann technique.

An observable for vacancy characterization and diffusion in crystals.

To locate the position and characterize the dynamics of a vacancy in a crystal, we propose to represent it as the ground state density of a pseudo-quantum probe particle associated to the Hamiltonian which has, for the potential energy, the field generated by the atoms in the sample. In this description, the coefficient of the kinetic energy term is a tunable parameter controlling the density localization in the regions of the relevant minima of the potential energy field. Based on this description, we derive a set of collective variables that we use in rare event simulations to identify some of the vacancy diffusion paths in a 2D crystal.

Sputum smear concentration may misidentify acid-fast bacilli as Mycobacterium tuberculosis in HIV-infected patients.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis in most resource-limited settings still depends on smear microscopy for identification of acid-fast bacilli (AFB). However, recently developed molecular diagnostics that test for the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) DNA have been shown to be superior for confirmation of TB diagnosis.

Methods: At regular clinical visits over a 12-month period, we collected sputa from HIV-infected patients presenting with signs or symptoms of TB at 2 Nigerian clinics.

Metastable wetting on superhydrophobic surfaces: continuum and atomistic views of the Cassie-Baxter-Wenzel transition.

In this Letter, we develop a continuum theory for the Cassie-Baxter-Wenzel (CB-W) transition. The proposed model accounts for the metastabilities in the wetting of rough hydrophobic surfaces, allows us to reconstruct the transition mechanism, and identifies the free energy barriers separating the CB and W states as a function of the liquid pressure. This information is crucial in the context of superhydrophobic surfaces, where there is interest in extending the duration of the metastable superhydrophobic CB state.

Immediate versus delayed loading of single mandibular molars. One-year results from a randomised controlled trial.

Purpose: To compare the outcome of immediate non-occlusal loading and that of delayed implant loading in the bilateral replacement of single mandibular molars.

Materials And Methods: This study was designed as a randomised, controlled, split-mouth trial. Twenty patients with bilaterally missing first mandibular molars had one of the sites to be restored randomly assigned to be treated with immediately or conventionally loaded single implants.

Impact of hepatitis C virus on HIV response to antiretroviral therapy in Nigeria.

The effect of hepatitis C virus (HCV) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) response in patients in sub-Saharan Africa is unknown. We studied 1431 HIV-infected ART initiators in Jos, Nigeria, of whom 6% were HCV coinfected. Velocity-enhanced cooperation of moving agents playing public goods games.

In this paper we study the evolutionary dynamics of the public goods game in a population of mobile agents embedded in a two-dimensional space. In this framework, the backbone of interactions between agents changes in time, allowing us to study the impact that mobility has on the emergence of cooperation in structured populations. Our results point out that a low degree of mobility enhances cooperation in the system.

Cassie-Baxter and Wenzel states on a nanostructured surface: phase diagram, metastabilities, and transition mechanism by atomistic free energy calculations.

In this work, we study the wetting of a surface decorated with one nanogroove by a bulk Lennard-Jones liquid at various temperatures and densities. We used atomistic simulations aimed at computing the free energy of the stable and metastable states of the system, as well as the intermediate states separating them. We found that the usual description in terms of Cassie-Baxter and Wenzel states is insufficient, as the system presents two states of the Cassie-Baxter type.

Efficacy of major anthelmintics against horse cyathostomins in France.

This paper reports a survey conducted in France during 2011 to evaluate the efficacy of commonly used anthelmintics against horse cyathostomins. A total of 40 farms and 1089 horses were screened for the presence of cyathostomins. All farms but one were positive, with an overall animal infection rate of 53.

Molecular detection of Capillaria aerophila, an agent of canine and feline pulmonary capillariosis.

Modeling human mobility responses to the large-scale spreading of infectious diseases.

Current modeling of infectious diseases allows for the study of realistic scenarios that include population heterogeneity, social structures, and mobility processes down to the individual level. The advances in the realism of epidemic description call for the explicit modeling of individual behavioral responses to the presence of disease within modeling frameworks. Here we formulate and analyze a metapopulation model that incorporates several scenarios of self-initiated behavioral changes into the mobility patterns of individuals.

Computer assisted dental rehabilitation in free flaps reconstructed jaws: one year follow-up of a prospective clinical study.

Continuity defects in bone after resection of the jaw may cause problems, and osseo-myocutaneous free flaps are the gold standard for their reconstruction. Implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitation is reliable with these microvascular options, although it is still a serious challenge. Genotyping of Toxoplasma gondii isolates in meningo-encephalitis affected striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) from Italy.

This study reports the occurrence of Toxoplasma gondii in the brain of three striped dolphins (Stenella ceoruleoalba) found stranded on the Ligurian Sea coast of Italy between 2007 and 2008. These animals showed a severe, subacute to chronic, non-purulent, multifocal meningo-encephalitis, with the cerebral parenchyma of two dolphins harbouring protozoan cysts and zoites immunohistochemically linked to T. gondii.

New insights into morphological and biological features of Capillaria aerophila (Trichocephalida, Trichuridae).

Capillaria aerophila is a trichuroid nematode affecting the respiratory system of dogs, cats, wild carnivores and, occasionally, humans. Animals become infected by ingesting larvated eggs or earthworms, which act as facultative intermediate hosts. The aim of this work is to present new insights into morphological and biological features of this neglected lungworm.

Canine and feline infections by cardiopulmonary nematodes in central and southern Italy.

Capillaria aerophila, Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, Angiostrongylus vasorum and Dirofilaria immitis are cardiopulmonary nematodes affecting dogs and cats and presently emerging in several countries. The results obtained in 2009 - 2010 during a study aiming to investigate the occurrence of these nematodes in regions from Central (Marche and Abruzzo regions--Sites A and B, respectively) and southern (Apulia--Site C) Italy are here reported. A total of 534 and 436 individual faecal samples collected from dogs and cats were examined, together with 471 and 34 faecal environmental samples taken from dog shelters and catteries.

Hydrodynamics from statistical mechanics: combined dynamical-NEMD and conditional sampling to relax an interface between two immiscible liquids.

We present a method to study hydrodynamic phenomena from atomistic simulations. Tumors of the lateral wall of the mouth have different origins and behaviors. These lesions often arise from salivary tissues, such as the accessory parotid gland, but tumors can also originate from the muscles, buccal fat pad, or other structures. Surgical approaches are limited in this region by the presence of the facial nerve and the Stensen's duct.

Temperature accelerated Monte Carlo (TAMC): a method for sampling the free energy surface of non-analytical collective variables.

We introduce a new method to simulate the physics of rare events. The method, an extension of the Temperature Accelerated Molecular Dynamics, comes in use when the collective variables introduced to characterize the rare events are either non-analytical or so complex that computing their derivative is not practical. We illustrate the functioning of the method by studying the homogeneous crystallization in a sample of Lennard-Jones particles.

Local empathy provides global minimization of congestion in communication networks.

We present a mechanism to avoid congestion in complex networks based on a local knowledge of traffic conditions and the ability of routers to self-coordinate their dynamical behavior. In particular, routers make use of local information about traffic conditions to either reject or accept information packets from their neighbors. We show that when nodes are only aware of their own congestion state they self-organize into a hierarchical configuration that delays remarkably the onset of congestion although leading to a sharp first-order-like congestion transition.

Computed tomography-guided implant surgery for dental rehabilitation in mandible reconstructed with a fibular free flap: description of the technique.

The fibular free flap, with or without a cutaneous component, is the gold standard for reconstructing mandibular defects. Dental prosthetic rehabilitation is possible this way, even if the prosthesis-based implant is still a challenge because of the many anatomical and prosthetic problems. We think that complications can be overcome or reduced by adopting the new methods of computed tomography (CT)-assisted implant surgery (NobelGuide, Nobel Biocare AB, Goteborg, Sweden).

Impact of HIV type 1 subtype on drug resistance mutations in Nigerian patients failing first-line therapy.

A diverse array of non-subtype B HIV-1 viruses circulates in Africa and dominates the global pandemic. It is important to understand how drug resistance mutations in non-B subtypes may develop differently from the patterns described in subtype B. HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and protease sequences from 338 patients with treatment failure to first-line ART regimens were evaluated.

Two computed tomography scans were performed, the first with the patient wearing the denture/radiographic guide and the radiographic index, and the second of the denture alone.
