Every year, the residues generated by the disposal of packaging materials produced from fossil fuels have been growing, denoting a major environmental problem that can be mitigated by the development of biodegradable materials from natural polymers, particularly edible films. This work aimed at the development of pectin films added by cupuassu puree and chitosan nanoparticles and to evaluate the improvement of the physical-mechanical performance of the composite films. The nanostructures displayed an average size of 110 nm and a zeta potential of approximately +40 mV.

Robot-Assisted Infratrigonal Vesicovaginal Fistula Repair.

Background: Malaria represents a worldwide medical emergency affecting mainly poor areas. Plasmodium parasites during blood stages can release kinins to the extracellular space after internalization of host kininogen inside erythrocytes and these released peptides could represent an important mechanism in liver pathophysiology by activation of calcium signaling pathway in endothelial cells of vertebrate host. Receptors (B1 and B2) activated by kinins peptides are important elements for the control of haemodynamics in liver and its physiology.

Community empowerment has been studied as a process and result phenomenon throughout the last 40 years. Community partnership, which has been studied during the last 20 years, has been identified as a key process to promote intervention and research within communities. In this paper, we introduce the relation between these two concepts, from the research that is being developed at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Health Research (CIIS) in Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

Spin States Protected from Intrinsic Electron-Phonon Coupling Reaching 100 ns Lifetime at Room Temperature in MoSe.

We present time-resolved Kerr rotation measurements, showing spin lifetimes of over 100 ns at room temperature in monolayer MoSe. These long lifetimes are accompanied by an intriguing temperature-dependence of the Kerr amplitude, which increases with temperature up to 50 K and then abruptly switches sign. Using ab initio simulations, we explain the latter behavior in terms of the intrinsic electron-phonon coupling and the activation of transitions to secondary valleys.

Background: Induction of T-cell apoptosis constitutes a mechanism of action for Glatiramer Acetate (GA). We investigated whether activation of apoptotic T-cell death may be indicative of optimal treatment response in patients with relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS), with respect to radiological activity.

Methods: We studied apoptotic markers on blood T-cells of forty patients with RRMS, 19 patients under GA and 21 patients under interferon-β (IFNβ), by flow cytometry.

Background: To test whether a single or a composite set of macular vascular density parameters, evaluated with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), are able to predict nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) staging according to the gold-standard ETDRS-grading scheme.

Methods: Prospectively defined, cross-sectional study in which macular structural and vascular parameters of diabetic eyes with nonproliferative DR (up to ETDRS Level 53) were evaluated with OCTA (Avanti RTVue-XR 100, Optovue Inc, Fremont, CA). Seven-field photographs of the fundus were taken for DR staging according to the ETDRS-grading scheme.

Respiratory resistance and reactance in adults with sickle cell anemia: Part 2-Fractional-order modeling and a clinical decision support system for the diagnosis of respiratory disorders.

Background: A better understanding of sickle cell anemia (SCA) and improvements in drug therapy and health policy have contributed to the emergence of a large population of adults living with this disease. The mechanisms by which SCA produces adverse effects on the respiratory system of these patients are largely unknown. Fractional-order (FrOr) models have a high potential to improve pulmonary clinical science and could be useful for diagnostic purposes, offering accurate models with an improved ability to mimic nature.

Breathing is a complex rhythmic motor act, which is created by integrating different inputs to the respiratory centres. Analysing nonlinear fluctuations in breathing may provide clinically relevant information in patients with complex illnesses, such as asbestosis. We evaluated the effect of exposition to asbestos on the complexity of the respiratory system by investigating the respiratory impedance sample entropy (SampEnZrs) and recurrence period density entropy (RPDEnZrs).

We report a Microsporum audouinii infection in a female juvenile chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) presenting generalized dermatitis compatible with dermatophytosis.
