Every year, the residues generated by the disposal of packaging materials produced from fossil fuels have been growing, denoting a major environmental problem that can be mitigated by the development of biodegradable materials from natural polymers, particularly edible films. This work aimed at the development of pectin films added by cupuassu puree and chitosan nanoparticles and to evaluate the improvement of the physical-mechanical performance of the composite films. The nanostructures displayed an average size of 110 nm and a zeta potential of approximately +40 mV.

Location of fistula is major supratrigonal, with some cases located in the trigone and rarely below it. Disease treatment is surgical, and repair can be performed by several techniques, including robot-assisted.

Plasmodium parasites during blood stages can release kinins to the extracellular space after internalization of host kininogen inside erythrocytes and these released peptides could represent an important mechanism in liver pathophysiology by activation of calcium signaling pathway in endothelial cells of vertebrate host. Receptors (B1 and B2) activated by kinins peptides are important elements for the control of haemodynamics in liver and its physiology.

Community empowerment has been studied as a process and result phenomenon throughout the last 40 years. Community partnership, which has been studied during the last 20 years, has been identified as a key process to promote intervention and research within communities. In this paper, we introduce the relation between these two concepts, from the research that is being developed at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Health Research (CIIS) in Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

These long lifetimes are accompanied by an intriguing temperature-dependence of the Kerr amplitude, which increases with temperature up to 50 K and then abruptly switches sign. Using ab initio simulations, we explain the latter behavior in terms of the intrinsic electron-phonon coupling and the activation of transitions to secondary valleys.

We investigated whether activation of apoptotic T-cell death may be indicative of optimal treatment response in patients with relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS), with respect to radiological activity.
Methods: We studied apoptotic markers on blood T-cells of forty patients with RRMS, 19 patients under GA and 21 patients under interferon-β (IFNβ), by flow cytometry.
yambo is an open source project aimed at studying excited state properties of condensed matter systems from first principles using many-body methods. As input, yambo requires ground state electronic structure data as computed by density functional theory codes such as Quantum ESPRESSO and Abinit. yambo's capabilities include the calculation of linear response quantities (both independent-particle and including electron-hole interactions), quasi-particle corrections based on the GW formalism, optical absorption, and other spectroscopic quantities.

Methods: Prospectively defined, cross-sectional study in which macular structural and vascular parameters of diabetic eyes with nonproliferative DR (up to ETDRS Level 53) were evaluated with OCTA (Avanti RTVue-XR 100, Optovue Inc, Fremont, CA). Seven-field photographs of the fundus were taken for DR staging according to the ETDRS-grading scheme.
Background And Objective: Integer and fractional-order models have emerged as powerful methods for obtaining information regarding the anatomical or pathophysiological changes that occur during respiratory diseases. However, the precise interpretation of the model parameters in light of the lung structural changes is not known. This study analyzed the associations of the integer and fractional-order models with structural changes obtained using multidetector computed tomography densitometry (MDCT) and pulmonary function analysis.

Background: A better understanding of sickle cell anemia (SCA) and improvements in drug therapy and health policy have contributed to the emergence of a large population of adults living with this disease. The mechanisms by which SCA produces adverse effects on the respiratory system of these patients are largely unknown. Fractional-order (FrOr) models have a high potential to improve pulmonary clinical science and could be useful for diagnostic purposes, offering accurate models with an improved ability to mimic nature.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence on shear bond strength (SBS) of the pre-conditioning of GSE, on human dentin surfaces conditioned with Er,Cr:YSGG laser. The sample consisted of 64 non-carious human teeth, divided into eight groups, four groups conditioned with Er,Cr:YSGG laser (4.

Analysing nonlinear fluctuations in breathing may provide clinically relevant information in patients with complex illnesses, such as asbestosis. We evaluated the effect of exposition to asbestos on the complexity of the respiratory system by investigating the respiratory impedance sample entropy (SampEnZrs) and recurrence period density entropy (RPDEnZrs).

Its psychoactive effects led to an illicit use context including recreational purposes, muscle building effects in bodybuilders and drug-facilitated crimes, specifically in sexual assaults. Besides the misuse of the main compound, there are precursors like Gammabutyrolactone (GBL) and 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BD), usually non controlled substances, becoming a much easier way to obtain the target-compound.

Such injuries are not completely neutralized by the available antivenins, which in general are focused on halting systemic effects. Therefore it is prudent to investigate the potential antiophidic effects of natural and synthetic compounds, perhaps combining them with serum therapy, to potentially attenuate or eliminate the adverse local and systemic effects of snake venom.

Materials And Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients that underwent PCNL at our institution from June 2011 to October 2016 in PRON and in three variations of the supine position: complete supine (COMPSUP), original Valdivia (VALD), and Galdakao - modified Valdivia (GALD). All patients had a complete pre - operative evaluation, including computed tomography (CT).

Sepsis is an overwhelming systemic inflammation resulting from an uncontrolled infection that causes extensive tissue damage, organ dysfunction and eventually death. A growing body of evidence indicates that impaired neutrophil migration to the site of infection is associated with poor outcome in sepsis. Here we show that galectin-3 (Gal-3), an endogenous glycan-binding protein, plays a critical role in sepsis outcome.

The clinical manifestations of Zika are usually mild, mostly presenting as an exanthematic febrile disease, but on some occasions, it might be associated with microcephaly after intrauterine infection, and Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Zika virus is primarily transmitted by mosquito bites, but other means of transmission have been described, and potential risk for blood transmission has been reported in French Polynesia and Brazil.
