Postexercise hypotension induced by low-intensity resistance exercise in hypertensive women receiving captopril.

Objective: The present study investigated the effect of a single bout of low-intensity resistance exercise on recovery blood pressure in hypertensive women receiving captopril.

Methods: Twelve essential hypertensive women, who were receiving captopril, underwent two experimental sessions: control (C - 40 min of seated rest) and low-intensity resistance exercise (E - six resistance exercises, three sets, 20 repetitions, 40% of one repetition maximum). Clinic blood pressure was measured in the laboratory, before and for 120 min after exercise or rest.

Lomas-Cooperman technique for rectal prolapse in the elderly patient.

Background: A variety of surgical procedures is used to correct complete rectal prolapse (RP). We analysed the immediate and long-term results of the Lomas-Cooperman technique in the management of symptomatic RP in elderly patients with severe concomitant diseases.

Methods: Across a 13-year period, all patients with RP having undergone surgery with this procedure were retrospectively evaluated.

Transgenic farm animals have been proposed as an alternative to current bioreactors for large scale production of biopharmaceuticals. However, the efficiency of both methods in the production of the same protein has not yet been established. Here we report the production of recombinant human growth hormone (hGH) in the milk of a cloned transgenic cow at levels of up to 5 g l(-1).

[Palpebral cryptococcosis: case report].

This paper is about a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome empirically treated for miliary tuberculosis. During the clinical evolution the patient presented lesions compromising the right eyelid and tarsal conjunctiva. Post mortem parasitological evaluation of dogs seroreactive for Leishmania from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

A parasitological study was conducted on 66 dogs seroreactive for Leishmania captured as a control measure of visceral leishmaniasis in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Biological samples from different anatomical sites were collected during autopsy of the animals and cultured on biphasic medium (NNN/Schneider). The Leishmania isolates were characterized by isoenzyme electrophoresis.

This work presents behavioral effects of (O-methyl)-N-2,6-dihydroxybenzoyl-tyramine (riparin III) isolated from the unripe fruit of Aniba riparia (Nees) Mez (Lauraceae) in animal models of open field, rota rod, elevated plus maze and hole board tests in mice. Riparin III (ripIII) was administered orally, in male mice, at single doses of 25 and 50 mg/kg. The results showed that ripIII, at both doses, had no effects on the spontaneous motor activity in the rota rod test nor in the number of squares crossed in the open field test.

The investigation of the characteristics of mixed floating monolayers of phospholipids and usnic acid (UA), an active metabolite from lichens, can provide valuable information on how to prepare stable liposomes that could serve as carriers of UA for therapeutic proposes. The present paper is concerned with the thermodynamic analysis of the behavior of Langmuir monolayers formed by mixing different phospholipids (dibehenoylphosphatidylcholine, DBPC, dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine, DPPC, and dioleoylphosphatidylcholine, DOPC) and UA at varied molar fractions. Relevant thermodynamic parameters such as excess areas, excess free energies and free energy of mixing were derived from the surface pressure data obtained from compression measurements performed in a Langmuir trough.

Dielectric properties of Bauhinia monandra and concanavalin A lectin monolayers, part I.

The dielectric properties of the galactose-binding lectins Bauhinia monandra (BmoLL) and Concanavalin A (Con A) were assessed by surface potential measurements of their spread monolayers on an aqueous subphase containing a monovalent electrolyte. For both lectins the curves of surface potential versus mean molecular area (DeltaV-A) and the independently recorded isotherms of surface pressure versus mean molecular area (Pi-A) were shown to be pH-dependent. As the subphase pH changed from 2 to 9, a noticeable trend to higher surface pressures accompanied the compression of the monolayers.
