[Hemorrhagic vesicle-bullous lesions in Henoch-Schönlein purpura and review of literature].

Introduction: The characteristic feature of Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is palpable purpura, however hemorrhagic vesicles and blisters have been rarely reported.

Case Reports: From January 1983 to December 2007, 5079 patients were followed in our Pediatric Rheumatology Unit, 232 (4.6%) of them with the diagnosis of HSP.

Alpha-, beta- and kappa-caseins inhibit the proliferation of the myeloid cell lines 32D cl3 and WEHI-3 and exhibit different differentiation properties.

We have recently shown that sodium caseinate (CasNa) was able to inhibit the proliferation of the myeloid cell line 32D cl3 in a non-toxic way, and that it also induced the expression of macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF). Casein is the main protein present in milk and is composed of alpha (alpha), beta (beta) and kappa (kappa) subunits. This work was undertaken to evaluate if any one casein is responsible for the proliferation and differentiation properties found for CasNa on myeloid cells.

Measuring premorbid IQ in traumatic brain injury: an examination of the validity of the Wechsler Test of Adult Reading (WTAR).

Estimation of premorbid IQ in traumatic brain injury (TBI) is clinically and scientifically valuable because it permits the quantification of the cognitive impact of injury. This is achieved by comparing performances on tests of current ability to estimates of premorbid IQ, thereby enabling current capacity to be interpreted in light of preinjury ability. However, the validity of premorbid IQ tests that are commonly used for TBI has been questioned.

Treatment of subclinical hypothyroidism reduces atherogenic lipid levels in a placebo-controlled double-blind clinical trial.

Many studies have found clinical and metabolic alterations in subclinical hypothyroidism, however, there are disagreements about the benefits of levothyroxine therapy. The objective of the present study was to analyze the effects of 6 months of treatment on the lipid profile of patients with subclinical hypothyroidism. A randomized double blind, placebo-controlled clinical assay was conducted.

Subclinical hypothyroidism: psychiatric disorders and symptoms.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and symptoms in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism.

Method: Ninety-four outpatients with at least two elevated serum thyrotrophin levels (> 4 microU/ml) and normal FT4, and 43 euthyroid outpatients, both groups from HUCFF-UFRJ, were evaluated. Psychiatric diagnosis was based on the Structured Clinical Interview Diagnostic for the DSM-IV axis I (SCID-I/DSM-IV), the psychopathological symptoms on Hamilton anxiety and depression scales, and the Beck Inventory.

Evidence of transient enhancement to cognitive functioning in healthy young adults through environmental enrichment: implications for rehabilitation after brain injury.

We examined preliminarily whether intensive mental activity can transiently enhance higher cognitive functioning in healthy adults. Ten healthy participants performed intensive mental activity for 2 weeks. The intervention entailed daily memorization of multiple prose passages and performance of demanding, speeded mental arithmetic.

Is there a trade-off between cognitive and motor recovery after traumatic brain injury due to competition for limited neural resources?

The status of neurorehabilitation for traumatic brain injury (TBI) is under active debate because of a dearth of research findings demonstrating effectiveness. This may be due, in part, to limitations in our understanding of basic mechanisms of cognitive and motor recovery,including those that might impede recovery. In this regard, we examined whether overall recovery following TBI might be undermined by competition between cognitive and motor functions for finite neural resources during recovery.

Mechanisms of spontaneous confabulations: a strategic retrieval account.

The 'temporality' hypothesis of confabulation posits that confabulations are true memories displaced in time, while the 'strategic retrieval' hypothesis suggests a general retrieval failure of which temporal confusion is a common symptom. Four confabulating patients with rupture of an anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysm, eight non-confabulating ACoA controls and 16 normal controls participated in three experiments designed to test the two hypotheses. In Experiment 1, participants were tested on two continuous recognition tasks, one requiring temporal context distinctions, previously shown to be sensitive to confabulation and another that only requires content distinctions.

Episodic memory for object location versus episodic memory for object identity: do they rely on distinct encoding processes?

Three experiments were conducted to determine whether encoding processes that support episodic memory for object location are distinct from those that support memory for object identity. Guided by transfer-appropriate processing notions, we examined with an incidental learning paradigm whether an attentional focus on object location at encoding promotes subsequent recovery of object location, whereas a focus on object identity promotes recovery of object identity. We found that judging spatial relationships at encoding selectively supports recovery of object location, provided the test assesses memory for these relationships (rather than absolute location); our results also showed that judging physical and semantic object attributes promotes recovery of object identity preferentially.

Intact implicit memory for newly formed verbal associations in amnesic patients following single study trials.

This study examines the ability of amnesic patients to recover newly formed associations implicitly after a single study trial. Fifteen amnesic patients with various etiologies studied pairs by forming a sentence containing both words. At test, all participants saw 40 intact pairs, 40 rearranged pairs, and 40 new words.

Strategic retrieval and the frontal lobes: evidence from confabulation and amnesia.

Confabulation and amnesia are considered disorders of episodic but not of semantic memory. To test the limits of this view, retrieval from episodic and semantic memory was investigated in eight confabulating and nine non-confabulating amnesic subjects, and in 17 matched control subjects, by using a personal and an historical version of the Crovitz [Unconstrained search in long-term memory, Paper presented at the meeting of the Psychonomic Society, St Louis, MO, 1973] cue-word test.
