Background: Urethral stricture disease is detrimental to quality of life. The Optilume Urethral Drug Coated Balloon (DCB) offers a solution utilizing a paclitaxel-coated balloon to expand strictures and prevent recurrence. Following the ROBUST trials, it has been proposed that DCB is more effective than conventional endoscopic management for recurrent, small anterior urethral strictures.

From Slow Shifts to Fast Flips: Unraveling problem-based learning group function dynamics.

Purpose: Problem-Based Learning (PBL) relies on self-directed learning in small groups in the presence of a tutor. While the effectiveness of PBL is often attributed to the dynamics of group function, change in group function over time and factors influencing group function development are less understood. This study aims to explore the development of PBL group function over time to better understand the factors that give rise to high-functioning groups.

Long-term Renal Preservation and Complication Profile With Ileal Ureter Creation.

Objective: To examine long-term ileal ureter replacement results at over 32 years at our institution. Long segment or proximal ureteral strictures pose a challenging reconstructive problem. Ureteroureterostomy, psoas hitch, Boari flap, buccal ureteroplasty, and autotransplantation are common reconstructive techniques.

Female Bladder Dysfunction Following Boari Bladder Flap Ureteral Reconstruction.

Objective: To describe our institution's experience with Boari flap ureteral reconstruction, specifically focusing on the development of postoperative lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS).

Methods: A retrospective review of all Boari flaps performed at our institution between 2013 and 2023 was performed, excluding patients with urothelial carcinoma and males, given the frequency of LUTS from benign prostatic hyperplasia. Primary outcome was the development of new onset LUTS and subsequent treatment.

Ground penetrating radar observations of the contact between the western delta and the crater floor of Jezero crater, Mars.

The delta deposits in Jezero crater contain sedimentary records of potentially habitable conditions on Mars. NASA's Perseverance rover is exploring the Jezero western delta with a suite of instruments that include the RIMFAX ground penetrating radar, which provides continuous subsurface images that probe up to 20 meters below the rover. As Perseverance traversed across the contact between the Jezero crater floor and the delta, RIMFAX detected a distinct discontinuity in the subsurface layer structure.

Measuring group function in problem-based learning: development of a reflection tool.

Background: Problem-based learning (PBL) is a pedagogy involving self-directed learning in small groups around case problems. Group function is important to PBL outcomes, but there is currently poor scaffolding around key self-reflective practices that necessarily precedes students' and tutors' attempts to improve group function. This study aims to create a structured, literature-based and stakeholder-informed tool to help anchor reflective practices on group function.

A review of the literature and proposed algorithm for penile fracture management.

Introduction: In the management of penile fractures, immediate surgical repair has resulted in better outcomes when compared with a conservative approach; however, there is currently no consensus on the treatment of patients presenting beyond the immediate period (>24 hours) following injury.

Objectives: To examine the latest literature on management strategies in penile fracture and propose an optimal algorithm for the treatment of patients with delayed presentation.

Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted following the PRISMA-P 2020 guidelines.

Percutaneous Electrical Nerve Field Stimulation in Children and Adolescents With Functional Dyspepsia-Integrating a Behavioral Intervention.

Objectives: Functional dyspepsia (FD) includes postprandial distress and epigastric pain syndrome. Percutaneous electrical nerve field stimulation (PENFS) in addition to behavioral interventions (BI) has shown benefits in children with functional abdominal pain but not specifically in FD. We aimed to assess the efficacy of PENFS for treating FD and compare the outcomes with those who received the combination of PENFS + BI.

Percutaneous Cystolitholapaxy Is Safe and Effective in Adult Patients With Lower Urinary Tract Reconstruction Utilizing Bowel.

Objective: To investigate the safety, efficacy, and surgical approach of percutaneous bladder calculi removal in adult patients with prior lower urinary tract reconstruction utilizing bowel using a single-institution database.

Methods: Twenty patients with prior history of lower urinary tract reconstruction (continent cutaneous urinary reservoir, augmentation enterocystoplasty with catheterizable channel, or ileal neobladder) who underwent percutaneous cystolitholapaxy from 2014 to 2020 were identified from an IRB-approved database. Analysis of patient demographics, operative details, stone composition, stone-free rates, recurrence, and associated complications was performed.

Ileal Ureter Utilization in Patients With Previous Urinary Diversions.

Objective: To evaluate a subset of patients who develop strictures requiring Ileal Ureter (IU) in the setting of prior urinary diversion or augmentation (ileal conduits, neobladders, continent urinary diversions). To our knowledge, there are no prior studies on patients with IU substitution into established lower urinary tract reconstructions.

Methods: A retrospective review of patients (18 years) undergoing IU creation from 1989 to 2021 was performed.

Ground penetrating radar observations of subsurface structures in the floor of Jezero crater, Mars.

The Radar Imager for Mars Subsurface Experiment instrument has conducted the first rover-mounted ground-penetrating radar survey of the Martian subsurface. A continuous radar image acquired over the Perseverance rover's initial ~3-kilometer traverse reveals electromagnetic properties and bedrock stratigraphy of the Jezero crater floor to depths of ~15 meters below the surface. The radar image reveals the presence of ubiquitous strongly reflecting layered sequences that dip downward at angles of up to 15 degrees from horizontal in directions normal to the curvilinear boundary of and away from the exposed section of the Séitah formation.

Sarcoidosis: A rare cause of penile edema.

Reports of penile sarcoidosis are rare in the literature. We describe the case of a male who presented with several months of distal penile swelling and progressive inability to retract the foreskin. Firm, non-tender subcutaneous nodules were palpated near the base of the penis.

The role of urethral ligation after AUS failure and end stage urethra.

Purpose: To provide our single-center experience with an approach to refractory stress urinary incontinence (SUI) with permanent urethral ligation (PUL) and suprapubic tube (SPT) placement, in hopes of contributing to the limited body of research surrounding this surgical treatment option for patients with end-stage urethra (ESU).

Methods: All patients undergoing PUL with SPT placement from 01/01/2018 to 04/30/2022 were identified from an institutional database. Institutional Review Board exempt status was granted for the conduct of this study.

Cost-Effectiveness of 90-day Single-use Flexible Cystoscope Trial: Single Center Micro-Costing Analysis and User Satisfaction.

Objective: To evaluate cost-effectiveness and user satisfaction of a single-use flexible cystoscope at a tertiary care center we conducted a 90-day trial. Single-use flexible cystoscope advancements have introduced alternative options to reusable scopes. However, there is a paucity of cost-effectiveness and provider satisfaction studies examining the implementation of a hospital-based transition to single-use cystoscopes.

Integrating an Innovative, Cost-Effective Electronic Documentation System for Undergraduate Nursing Students.

Over the past 15 years, the use of electronic medical record systems in the healthcare setting has grown exponentially. Accurate input of patient data is critical to facilitate safe care and effective communication among all members of the healthcare team. To keep pace with the practice environment, nursing students must have the opportunity to document health-related information in an electronic medical record early in the educational program.

Inactivation of mitochondrial complex I stimulates chloroplast ATPase in Physcomitrium patens.

Light is the ultimate source of energy for photosynthetic organisms, but respiration is fundamental for supporting metabolism during the night or in heterotrophic tissues. In this work, we isolated Physcomitrella (Physcomitrium patens) plants with altered respiration by inactivating Complex I (CI) of the mitochondrial electron transport chain by independently targeting on two essential subunits. Inactivation of CI caused a strong growth impairment even in fully autotrophic conditions in tissues where all cells are photosynthetically active, demonstrating that respiration is essential for photosynthesis.

Definitive surgical therapy for refractory radiation cystitis: Evaluating effectiveness, tolerability, and extent of surgical approach.

Introduction And Objective: The management of severe symptoms secondary to radiation changes to the bladder can be difficult. Many patients often endure costly procedures, hospitalizations, transfusions, and physician visits for intractable symptoms. Our aim was to evaluate the short-term efficacy and feasibility of urinary diversion in patients with severe, debilitating symptoms related to radiation cystitis by focusing on perioperative data examining surgical feasibility and assess for any improvement in the number of procedures, transfusions, hospitalizations, and office visits required.

Late recognition of an early catastrophic failure of a carbon fiber reinforced distal femoral plate: A case report.

The use of carbon fiber reinforced implants to address distal femur fractures has gained in popularity due to their favorable mechanical characteristics and potential for improved healing. The failure of metal locked plates for this application has been widely reported. Here is presented a novel case of early failure of a carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone (PEEK) plate applied for a distal femur fracture.

Initial Experience with Novel Single-Use Disposable Ureteroscopy: A Prospective, Single Arm 90-Day Trial of the Axis Ureteroscope.

Introduction: Novel digital disposable ureteroscopes are becoming more commonplace in endourological practices. We trialed the Axis™ single-use ureteroscope, which is distributed within the United States by Dornier MedTech. Our goal was to demonstrate clinical equivalence to our reusable platform and to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a single-use digital ureteroscope.

A Holistic Systems Approach to Characterize the Impact of Pre- and Post-natal Oxycodone Exposure on Neurodevelopment and Behavior.

Increased risk of oxycodone (oxy) dependency during pregnancy has been associated with altered behaviors and cognitive deficits in exposed offspring. However, a significant knowledge gap remains regarding the effect of and postnatal exposure on neurodevelopment and subsequent behavioral outcomes. Using a preclinical rodent model that mimics oxy exposure (IUO) and postnatally (PNO), we employed an integrative holistic systems biology approach encompassing proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS), electrophysiology, RNA-sequencing, and Von Frey pain testing to elucidate molecular and behavioral changes in the exposed offspring during early neurodevelopment as well as adulthood.

Impact of obesity on male urethral sling outcomes.

Background: The impact of obesity on AdVance male urethral sling outcomes has been poorly evaluated. Anecdotally, male urethral sling placement can be more challenging due to body habitus in obese patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of obesity on surgical complexity using operative time as a surrogate and secondarily to evaluate the impact on postoperative pad use.

Robotic and open partial nephrectomy for intermediate and high complexity tumors: a matched-pairs comparison of surgical outcomes at a single institution.

To compare peri-operative factors and renal function following open partial nephrectomy (OPN) and robotic partial nephrectomy (RPN) for intermediate and high complexity tumors when controlling for tumor and patient complexity. A retrospective review of 222 patients undergoing partial nephrectomy was performed. Patients with intermediate (nephrometry score NS 7-9) or high (NS 10-12) complexity tumors were matched 2:1 for RPN:OPN using NS, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), and BMI.
