Background: A genomewide scan in a DA x ACI F2 intercross studied for collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) identified the severity quantitative trait locus Cia25 on rat chromosome 12. Cia25 co-localises with loci regulating several forms of autoimmune diseases in rats, mice and humans, suggesting a common gene.

Objective: To characterise the effects of Cia25 on severity of arthritis in congenic rats.

Neutrophils are required for the development of arthritis, and their migration into the synovial tissue coincides with the onset of clinical disease. Synovial neutrophil numbers also correlate with rheumatoid arthritis disease activity and severity. We hypothesized that certain arthritis severity genes regulate disease via the regulation of neutrophil migration into the joint.

Neutrophils are required for the development of arthritis in rodents, and are the predominant cell in the synovial fluid of active rheumatoid arthritis. We hypothesized that neutrophil migration into the inflammed joint is genetically regulated. In addition, this genetic regulation would be accounted for by one of the arthritis loci that we have previously identified in an intercross between arthritis-susceptible DA and arthritis-resistant ACI rats studied for collagen-induced arthritis.

A potential novel therapy for phenylketonuria involves oral administration of microencapsulated phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), an enzyme that converts phenylalanine to transcinnamic acid. A drawback of this potential therapy is that encapsulated PAL retains only 23% of its activity. Microcapsules are prepared by emulsifying PAL in 10% hemoglobin solution with water-saturated ether (WSE) and subsequent addition of cellulose nitrate dissolved in ether:ethanol (E:E) mixture.

Howlers (genus Alouatta) are widely captured with the use of anesthetic projectiles; however, no capture protocol involving the use of traps has been described to date. In the present study we describe the first efficient capture program for black and gold howlers (Alouatta caraya) using traps, which was implemented on the islands of the upper Paraná River in southern Brazil. We constructed two trap models with either manual or automatic activation (trap A with two entrances and guillotine-type doors; trap B with one entrance and a guillotine-type door).

We fed 2 low protein diets (LPD) to rats during pregnancy and lactation, and compared food intake and reproductive performance in the dams, and long-term growth in their offspring. The L93 and LM76 LPDs were derived from the American Society of Nutrition's recommended AIN93G and a modified version of the AIN76A purified control diets, respectively. The LPDs contained 8% crude protein in the form of casein and differed in their fat and carbohydrate sources.

Time-integrated and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopies have been used to probe the photophysical properties of ethidium bromide (Eb) complexed to calf thymus DNA (ct-DNA). Fluorescence decay profiles are obtained using the technique of time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC), and subsequently analysed using conventional sum-of-exponential (SOE) routines and also the maximum entropy method (MEM). Through use of these methods and simulated decay data, it is demonstrated that the kinetics of Eb in the presence of ds-DNA are best described by a generic model consisting of three exponential terms.

Background: Traits such as behavioral inhibition and neuroticism have been linked to the development of mood and anxiety disorders. Hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, a manifestation of the stress response, is often seen in major depression and has also been demonstrated in animals and humans with inhibited temperaments. A recent study found HPA hyperactivity in adults with high levels of neuroticism.

Truffles are hypogeous fungi which live in symbiosis with plant host roots in order to accomplish their life cycle. Some species, such as Tuber magnatum Pico, the 'white truffle', and Tuber melanosporum Vittad., the 'black truffle', are highly appreciated in many countries because of their special taste and smell.

Numerous studies in the past three decades have characterised 'psychotic major depression', a subtype of major depression which is accompanied by delusions or other psychotic features. Evidence from phenomenological and neurobiological investigations indicates that this is a unique disorder with clinical and biological characteristics that are distinct from those of nonpsychotic depression and from other psychotic disorders. Treatment studies have provided evidence of small placebo effects and good responses to electroconvulsive therapy or combination treatment with an antidepressant plus an antipsychotic agent.

Cia27 on rat chromosome 10 is a collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) severity quantitative trait locus originally identified in a study of (DA x ACI) F2. As an initial step towards the positional cloning of the Cia27 gene, a 17 cM (21 Mb) interval from the DA strain (arthritis-susceptible) containing the two-logarithm of odds support interval comprising Cia27 was introgressed into the ACI (arthritis-resistant) background through genotype-guided congenic breeding. ACI.

Establishing an oral hygiene protocol for the frail and functionally dependent elderly should be of special concern to health care providers. The previous assessment of a care center, including patients or residents and staff, allows an effective strategy to be designed. Oral health protocols are mainly based on the daily removal of bacterial plaque from teeth or prostheses (or both), cleaning of oral mucosa, and continual oral hydration.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in vitro causes transformation of B cells and generates B lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs). These LCLs have been widely used for the diagnostic of several genetic metabolic disorders. However, up to now, efficiency of LCL generation has been based on misleading subjective analysis.

Recent epidemiological studies have shown strong associations between low birth weight and the incidence of diabetes in the adult offspring. It has been hypothesized that exposure to maternal glucocorticoids programs cellular changes in the fetus which increases the susceptibility of the offspring to diabetes. Stressors produces large increases in maternal glucocorticoids.
