This retrospective observational study aimed to assess the effect of temperature-humidity index (THI) at calving and in the last trimester of pregnancy and calve-related factors affecting passive transfer of maternal immunoglobulin using Brix refractometry in Holstein calves. Blood samples from 4411 Holstein calves from a single large dairy farm in spring 2022 were used. A subset of data containing 6318 calvings was used to determine the effect of climatic conditions on the occurrence of agammaglobulinemia.

A Th2-score in the tumor microenvironment as a predictive biomarker of response to Bacillus Calmette Guérin in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder carcinoma: A retrospective study.

Intravesical Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) is the gold standard therapy for intermediate/high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). However, the response rate is ~60%, and 50% of non-responders will progress to muscle-invasive disease. BCG induces massive local infiltration of inflammatory cells (Th1) and ultimately cytotoxic tumor elimination.

Generalizability of reservoir computing for flux-driven two-dimensional convection.

We explore the generalization properties of an echo state network applied as a reduced-order model to predict flux-driven two-dimensional turbulent convection. To this end, we consider a convection domain with constant height with a variable ratio of buoyancy fluxes at the top and bottom boundaries, which break the top-down symmetry in comparison to the standard Rayleigh-Bénard case, thus leading to highly asymmetric mean and fluctuation profiles across the layer. Our direct numerical simulation model describes a convective boundary layer in a simple way.

Permanence time in the herd and milk production of Holstein cows with up to five successive extended lactations.

A total of 1338 high-yielding cows with five lactations from a large well-managed commercial dairy operation in a hot environment of northern Mexico were used to evaluate milk yield and reproductive performance of cows undergoing unplanned extended lactations (EL; > 450 days). The null hypothesis that cumulative milk yield during five consecutive lactations is the same in cows not having unplanned EL and cows with several EL was tested. All EL resulted from cows failing to become pregnant with ≥ 4 services.

Effects of Body Weight vs. Lean Body Mass on Wingate Anaerobic Test Performance in Endurance Athletes.

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of body weight or lean body mass-based load on Wingate Anaerobic Test performance in male and female endurance trained individuals. Thirty-one participants (22 male cyclists and triathletes and 9 female triathletes) completed two randomized Wingate Anaerobic Test (body weight and lean body mass loads) in stationary start. There were no significant differences in power outputs variables between loads in any group.

Short communication: reproductive response to concentrate supplementation of mixed-breed goats on rangeland.

The effect of concentrate supplementation to crossbred goats on rangeland during the dry period on their reproductive performance was investigated. Goats were assigned into two groups: a concentrate supplemented (S; n = 91) group and an unsupplemented (UNS; n = 118) group. S goats received 350 g/day of concentrate per head, 30 days prior to breeding (flushing in winter) and 30 days during the last trimester of pregnancy.

Vulnerable animals to heat stress have been described as ones with dark or black hides due to increasing absorption of solar radiation. The effect of coat color in pluriparous contemporary Holstein cows in a hot environment (mean annual temperature 24.6 °C), on body surface temperature (infrared thermography), physiological and hematological variables as well as milk yield and reproductive performance was assessed using 178 Holstein pluriparous cows (74 predominantly white and 104 predominantly black).

Factors influencing pregnancy per artificial insemination in repeat-breeder cows induced to ovulate with a CIDR-based protocol.

The aim of this study was to determine, using multiple logistic models, factors affecting pregnancy per AI (P/AI) following fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) in repeat breeders cows (RBC) treated with rbST throughout lactation. 498 RBC received a CIDR device and 100μg of GnRH on day 0. CIDR removal and PGF(2α) (25mg) treatment were done concurrently on day 7.

Uncommon causes of acute abdominal pain: multidetector computed tomography pearls and pitfalls for the radiologist on call.

We review uncommon causes of acute abdominal pain in which inconclusive multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) studies were followed by emergency surgery and unexpected diagnoses. Despite dedicated protocols and technical advances, MDCT of uncommon causes of acute abdominal pain still represents a significant challenge for the radiologist on call. We emphasize diagnostic pearls and pitfalls that may help the radiologist on call identify or suspect these uncommon causes of acute abdominal pain on MDCT.

Selection for nutrients by pregnant goats on a microphyll desert scrub.

The behavioral consequences of pregnancy in goats were studied to test the hypothesis that pregnant females on rangeland select a diet richer in nutrients once the demands of gestation increase, and that nutrient content in goat diets changes with the grazing season. A total of 12 mature mixed breed goats either pregnant (n = 6) or non-pregnant (n = 6) were used during the dry period (February to May). Dietary samples obtained from the oral cavity of grazing goats (restrained with a short light rope permanently tightened around their neck) were used for chemical analyses.

MDCT of abdominal wall lumbar hernias: anatomical review, pathologic findings and differential diagnosis.

Purpose: To review the anatomical landmarks of the abdominal wall lumbar region and its normal appearance on multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and to briefly describe the MDCT features of lumbar hernias.

Methods: We performed a retrospective search of the imaging report database from November 2007 to October 2011. We retrieved the clinical data and MDCT studies of patients suffering from abdominal wall lumbar hernias.

Effect of lactation number, year, and season of initiation of lactation on milk yield of cows hormonally induced into lactation and treated with recombinant bovine somatotropin.

Records representing data from 1,500 barren Holstein cows over an 8-yr period from a large commercial dairy farm in northern Mexico were analyzed to determine the effects of lactation number and season and year of initiation of lactation on milk production of cows induced hormonally into lactation and treated with recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) throughout lactation. Peak and 305-d milk yields were also assessed as predictors of total milk yield in cows induced into lactation. A significant quadratic relationship was found between 305-d milk yield and number of lactation [7,607±145 and 9,548±181 kg for first- and ≥6-lactation cows, respectively; mean ± standard error of the mean (SEM)] with the highest production occurring in the fifth lactation.

Objective: The purpose of this pictorial essay is to review the variations and anomalies of the neural arch and its processes with a focus on the articular and transverse processes. We also discuss variations and anomalies of the neural arch at the high cervical spine.

Conclusion: Variations and anomalies of the neural arch and its processes may be identified on MDCT studies.
