An Adult Patient With Rare Primary Intracranial Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma.

We report a rare case of primary intracranial alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) in the right temporal lobe of a 51-year-old male. ARMS is one of 3 histological subtypes of rhabdomyosarcoma that most commonly presents in older children and younger adults. To our knowledge, there have been no prior published reports of primary intracranial ARMS in adults.

Spinal Pleomorphic Xanthoastrocytoma With a QKI-RAF1 Fusion.

Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) is a slow-growing neoplasm that predominantly affects the pediatric and young adult population. This neoplasm has a good prognosis, with a median 10-year survival rate of 70%. The majority of tumors are supratentorial and arise in the temporal lobe, while spinal tumors are extremely rare, with only 8 reported cases.

Differential responses to copper-induced oxidative stress in the marine macroalgae Lessonia nigrescens and Scytosiphon lomentaria (Phaeophyceae).

In order to help explain the absence of the brown kelp Lessonia nigrescens from a coastal environment chronically enriched with copper, we characterized the biochemical responses induced by copper stress in this kelp and compared them with those displayed by the copper tolerant brown alga Scytosiphon lomentaria. Biodiversity of rocky intertidal benthic communities associated with copper mine tailing discharges in northern Chile.

Copper mine tailings have been discharged around the city of Chanaral, in northern Chile, for more than 60 years. This report summarizes a 17-month long monitoring study of species richness and biodiversity at five intertidal sites around the point of the tailing discharge. Superinduction of mitogen-stimulated interferon-gamma production and other lymphokines by Sendai virus.

We observed that Sendai virus preinduction of peripheral blood mononuclear cells and subsequent mitogenic stimulation resulted in: (i) Superproduction of interferon-gamma, (IFN-gamma) (ii) an increase in interleukin-2 (IL-2) synthesis that correlates with DNA synthesis when stimulated with phytohemagglutinin (PHA) or pokeweed mitogen (PWM) after treatment with the Sendai virus, while stimulation with Protein A from Staphylococcus aureus was not affected, and (iii) enhanced tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) production in response to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Treatment of monocyte cultures with LPS and cycloheximide or actinomycin-D inhibited the superinduction phenomenon. When cycloheximide was added at the viral induction time, the inhibition of TNF-alpha superproduction and DNA synthesis was still observed.
