Background: Nucleoside and nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) have become a standard treatment for both HIV and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections. Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) has been associated with kidney injury and possible long-term damage in patients with HIV. Few studies have examined whether this holds true for patients treated for HBV.

Cardiometabolic management in severe mental illness requiring an atypical antipsychotic.

Introduction: Cardiometabolic management was evaluated in patients with diabetes and a severe mental illness that require treatment with an atypical antipsychotic.

Methods: Seventy-four patients with diabetes and a severe mental illness treated with an atypical antipsychotic from the Fargo Veterans' Affairs Health Care System were included in this retrospective study. Primary end points analyzed the change in hemoglobin A1c (Hgb A1c), blood pressure, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol 12 months prior to and 12 months following the initiation of an atypical antipsychotic.

Although not an antibiotic in a new class, it offers a glimmer of hope in combating serious infections secondary to multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria when we have not seen a new class of antibacterial, particularly for Gram-negative bacteria, for more than 10 years. In vitro, doripenem exhibits a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and Amp-C β-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae and anaerobes.
