MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy​methamphetamine), also known as Ecstasy, is a synthetic amphetamine with hallucinogenic and stimulant properties, which has become increasingly favored as a substance for recreational use. Despite its deceptive reputation as "safe," chronic MDMA use is associated with neuropsychiatric complications, including psychosis. We describe a case of a 23-year-old woman with chronic MDMA use disorder and childhood trauma, who presented with severe psychosis and catatonic features.

Quantifying genetic structure and levels of genetic variation are fundamentally important to predicting the ability of populations to persist in human-altered landscapes and adapt to future environmental changes. Genetic structure reflects the dispersal of individuals over generations, which can be mediated by species-level traits or environmental factors. Dispersal distances are commonly positively associated with body size and negatively associated with the amount of degraded habitat between sites, motivating the investigation of these potential drivers of dispersal concomitantly.

Previous research suggests that routine psychosocial care for adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an eclectic and individualized mix of diluted evidence-based practices (EBPs) and low-value approaches. This study evaluated the extent to which a community-delivered EBP and usual care (UC) for adolescents with ADHD produce differential changes in theorized behavioral, psychological, and cognitive mechanisms of ADHD. Animals must continually evaluate stimuli in their environment to decide which opportunities to pursue, and in many cases these decisions can be understood in fundamentally economic terms. Although several brain regions have been individually implicated in these processes, the brain-wide mechanisms relating these regions in decision-making are unclear. Using an economic decision-making task adapted for rats, we find that neural activity in both of two connected brain regions, the ventrolateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and the dorsomedial striatum (DMS), was required for economic decision-making.

Background: Current trends in surgical neuro-oncology show that early discharges are safe and feasible with shorter lengths of stay (LOS) and fewer thromboembolic complications, fewer hospital-acquired infections, reduced costs, and greater patient satisfaction. Black cumin seeds and seed oil have long been used in traditional foods and medicine in South Asian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean countries and are valuable flavor ingredients. An important ingredient of black cumin is the small molecule thymoquinone (TQ), which manifests low toxicity and potential therapeutic activity against a wide number of diseases including diabetes, cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurs at high rates among college students, and there is an urgent need to develop brief and accessible interventions to help these at-risk students achieve academic and career success. This open-trial pilot study tested the feasibility and effectiveness of Written Exposure Therapy (WET; Sloan & Marx, 2019), a brief, five-session exposure-based treatment, when delivered in a real-world Counseling Services Center. Students who met criteria for probable PTSD were assessed at baseline, posttreatment, and 3-month follow-up using self-report assessments of PTSD and depression.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) affects more than 27 million individuals in North America and Europe, and current treatment strategies mainly aim to restore blood perfusion. However, many patients are ineligible for existing procedures, and these therapies are often ineffective. Xanthoangelol is a geranylated chalcone isolated from fruits of Amorpha fructicosa that exhibits antibacterial effects at low micromolar concentration against Gram-positive bacterial pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis. We demonstrate that Xanthoangelol treatment of Gram-positive bacteria affects bacterial membrane integrity and leads to a leakage of intracellular metabolites. This correlates with a rapid collapse of the membrane potential and results in a fast and strong bactericidal effect.

In the last decade, the use of microRNA (miRNA) and extracellular vesicle (EV) therapies has emerged as an alternative approach to mitigate the negative effects of several disease pathologies ranging from cancer to tissue and organ regeneration; however, delivery approaches towards target tissues have not been optimized. To alleviate these challenges, including rapid diffusion upon injection and susceptibility to degradation, porcine-derived decellularized extracellular matrix (ECM) hydrogels are examined as a potential delivery platform for miRNA and EV therapeutics. The incorporation of EVs and miRNA antagonists, including anti-miR and antago-miR, in ECM hydrogels results in a prolonged release as compared to the biologic agents alone.

As the number of global deaths attributed to cardiovascular disease continues to rise, viable treatments for cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction (MI) or conditions like peripheral artery disease (PAD) are critical. Recent studies investigating injectable biomaterials have shown promise in promoting tissue regeneration and functional improvement, and in some cases, incorporating other therapeutics further augments the beneficial effects of these biomaterials. In this review, we aim to emphasize the advantages of acellular injectable biomaterial-based therapies, specifically material-alone approaches or delivery of acellular biologics, in regards to manufacturability and the capacity of these biomaterials to regenerate or repair diseased tissue.
