Few studies have examined oral anticancer treatment utilization patterns among Medicare beneficiaries. To assess treatment utilization patterns of newly initiated oral anticancer agents across national samples of Medicare beneficiaries for 5 cancer types: chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), multiple myeloma (MM), metastatic prostate cancer (mPC), metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC), and metastatic breast cancer (mBC). This retrospective claims analysis used 100% Medicare Chronic Condition Data Warehouse (CCW) Parts A, B, and D files from 2011 to 2014 (for CML, MM, mPC, and mRCC patients) and a 5% random fee-for-service sample from 2011 to 2013 (for mBC patients).

Purpose: We assessed real-world spectrum and patterns of irAEs for patients treated with anti-PD(L)1 ICIs.

Methods: irAEs were defined using medical and pharmacy claims for patients enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan who initiated treatment with anti-PD(L)-1 and received ≥ 1 dose of therapy between 1 September 2014 and 28 February 2018.

Background: Response-guided therapy (RGT) is a treatment model that bases adjustments to therapeutic regimens on individualized patient physiologic response. This approach is applied to patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection who are treated with a triple therapy regimen of boceprevir or telaprevir in combination with pegylated interferon and ribavirin. As RGT expands in other pharmacologic regimens, including the treatment of breast cancer and acute myeloid leukemia, a measurement of how this approach is applied in clinical practice is important to determine whether the benefits of RGT are being optimized.

Research has shown that treatment interruptions are associated with worse failure-free survival in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML); however they are commonly used in clinical trials to manage adverse events. This study assessed the comparative rates of treatment interruption and regimen change between patients initiating first-line therapy with a first-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor (1GTKI) imatinib versus second-generation TKI (2GTKI), dasatinib or nilotinib, for the treatment of CML in clinical practice. This was a retrospective cohort study using the Humana Research Database.

Background: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treatment guidelines recommend first-line therapy with either first- or second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors (1GTKI, 2GTKI), but do not specify which generation should be used first.

Objective: To examine the association between initiation of 2GTKI versus 1GTKI and medication adherence, health services utilization, and healthcare costs.

Method: This was a retrospective cohort study utilizing administrative claims data from a single health plan within the US of commercial and Medicare patients newly initiating 1GTKI or 2GTKI therapy for CML between June 2010 and December 2011.

Background: Three distinct shortages of the generic drug leucovorin, a reduced form of folic acid used in several chemotherapy regimens, were reported by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between 2008 and 2014. Levoleucovorin, an alternative therapy to leucovorin, failed to demonstrate superiority over leucovorin in clinical trials and is substantially more expensive.

Objective: To calculate the impact of the leucovorin shortages on primary treatment costs to patients and a health plan, and to present strategies for health plans to deal with future drug shortages.
